There are several ways to connect a computer or laptop to a TV, one of them was using an HDMI cable. However, sometimes it happens that you have installed the equipment, prepared the necessary devices for output, but nevertheless the TV does not want to show the picture from the screen. In our review, we will dwell in more detail on the problems that arise when connecting a wire to a computer and offer recommendations for troubleshooting.

Causes

When the computer / laptop does not see the TV, the monitor screen says "No signal". This happens when HDMI is not working. The most common reasons include:

  • incorrect connection of equipment;
  • mechanical damage to the HDMI cable itself;
  • malfunction of the interface on a personal computer, TV or laptop;
  • breakdown of the video card or interruptions with the video card drivers;
  • incorrectly set monitor settings;
  • the settings on the TV are incorrectly set;
  • breakdown of the GPU processor on a laptop or computer

    We will figure out how to establish the cause of the malfunction in the following sections of our article.

    Diagnostics

    In order to establish the reason why the TV does not work through the HDMI cable, it is necessary to diagnose it. It includes a few simple steps:

    • assessment of the correctness of the scheme for connecting the TV to a PC, as well as an external examination of the wires for damage;
    • checking the accuracy of the set TV and personal computer settings;
    • diagnostics of the installed computer operating system for viruses and malicious software;
    • checking the relevance of the drivers for the built-in video card.

      These errors lead to the fact that TV equipment cannot see the connected HDMI device. In this case, simple steps will help to solve the problem by diagnostics.

      Checking for technical problems

      In some models of television equipment, the function of automatic detection of the signal source is not built-in, especially in cases where the TV was initially set to synchronize with other devices. To fix the situation you need to take the remote control, and then open the list of all possible signal sources: manually select the HDMI option from the proposed list.

      If this does not help, go to the TV settings in order to select the required connector. As a rule, modern TVs are equipped with a pair of HDMI outputs, you can see the connector's numeric code directly below it. On the panel in the settings, you should specify exactly the one where the cable is inserted. Switching between these ports is possible using special buttons or by means of numbers 8 and 2.

      In order for all settings to take effect, press Enter or Ok on the remote control. If there are no such buttons, then you just need to go through the menu just below and select the "Apply" option (in the English version it is written as Apply).

      One of the most common reasons why TV stops seeing a laptop or personal computer is breakage of the video card. In this case, the screen displays the phrase "No signal". In order to cope with this problem, you should update the drivers. They can be located on the installation disc, or, if it is not at hand, they can be downloaded from the official website of the GPU processor manufacturer.

      First you need study the given technical features of the video card... The fact is that not all graphics modules built into a computer support the ability to display images on two or more monitors at once. This information is usually indicated in the documentation that comes with the video card. In the absence of this guide you can use specialized software.

      Almost all connectors can be susceptible to mechanical damage, as well as short circuits, as a result of which contacts burn out. That's why carelessness in the use of technology, as well as any sudden power surge can damage the equipment, and then the computer will not see the TV.

      Qualified specialists strongly recommend connecting the HDMI cable only when all equipment is completely de-energized.

      With use, the cable exit pad on the computer often oxidizes - this can also be the reason why the device cannot detect the connection. In such a situation, it is best to contact a service center. Experienced craftsmen will re-solder all damaged contacts and thereby restore the full functionality of the equipment.

      Inspection of the cable for defects

      When determining the reasons why the TV does not see the image, it is very important to exclude the possibility of damage to the cable itself, since the damaged wire does not transmit a signal. To check, the wire should be connected to some other device and see if the image is displayed. Thus, it is possible either to immediately establish the source of the problem, or to significantly narrow the area of fault diagnosis. If the wire does not work with other equipment, the conclusion is obvious: it should be replaced with a new, functional one..

      If everything works well, then you need to make sure that the signal source on the TV is selected correctly.

      Find the external input method button on the TV remote control. There are usually three options: HDMI, Source, and input. Go to the proposed menus, select the input where you connected the power cable, and confirm your action.

      Computer settings

      If there are no interruptions in the signal receipt, then you should diagnose the settings of the PC or laptop. Quite often, they do not notice the TV due to incorrect parameters set in the system. You do not need specialized knowledge for repair, you just need to adhere to the most elementary instructions... Move the mouse over a free area on the screen, then right-click. In the window that appears, select the "Screen Resolution" tab, in some computer models it is called "Graphics Specifications".

      Find the best way to visually display the picture on the TV screen. Try to set the resolution as specified in the model's instruction manual... It's easier to turn on the settings panel on a laptop: you just need to hold down the Fn + F4 buttons and hold them until the resolution that suits you is determined by itself. If this does not help, then you will have to refer to the operating system settings on the computer.

      Windows 8

      To customize Windows 8, follow a series of the following steps:

      • go to the "Start" menu;
      • select the "Control Panel" function;
      • go to the tab "Design and personalization";
      • find the item "Screen" and select the option "Resolution";
      • in the window that opens, change the PC display to the option "Multiple monitors" or "Duplicate these screens";
      • save any changes you made.

      Windows 7

      In Windows 7, in addition to the main connection method through the control panel, there is also a special program that is usually in the system.

      • Type in the search bar "Connecting to a Projector", or go to the program yourself through the "Start" menu.
      • After the program opens, select "Duplicate".
      • Be sure to save any changes you made and close the program. If this solves your problem, a setup icon will appear at the bottom of the desktop of the computer monitor, indicating that the correct monitor is connected.

      Windows 10

      In order to configure the output of video from a computer to a TV in Windows 10, you need to do the following:

      • go to "Start" and click on the settings icon - usually it is in the form of gears;
      • enter the "Systems" option, then go to the "Display" tab;
      • the opened window displays the displays of external monitors available for connection;
      • all changes must be saved.

      Windows XP

      As you know, support for this operating system has long been discontinued, nevertheless, many modern TVs can still be connected to it. To do this, follow simple steps:

      • right-click on any free space on the desktop, then select the "Properties" option in the pop-up context menu;
      • open the item "Display Properties", in which we will be interested in the "Parameters" tab;
      • in the "Parameters" select the "Display" tab, then specify TV as the main monitor.

      Cleaning from malware

      It happens that the video signal from the laptop to the TV disappears due to the fact that viruses or other malicious programs have appeared in the equipment. Fortunately, such a problem does not occur often, nevertheless, such a breakdown cannot be completely ruled out. In order to increase the degree of protection of a computer or laptop, you should definitely download any antivirus, and it is not necessary to purchase a license at all - the first time, as a rule, about a month, users are provided with a free test version.

      The sequence of actions is as follows:

      • activate any antivirus you like, then start the scan option by clicking on the corresponding item in the window that opens;
      • specify the "Full scan" method, then click on the "Start scan" option.

      As a rule, a comprehensive check of the OS for malware lasts about a couple of hours. If the antivirus finds any virus applications and infected files in it, it will definitely indicate this in its scan report and offer to delete them.

      Recommendations

      It should be noted that difficulties in setting up the correct connection between a PC and a TV via an HDMI cable usually arise infrequently. And even if problems do appear, they usually can be solved on their own. The only exception is the problem of port malfunction, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to change the HDMI interface or to re-solder the entire contact pad without the use of professional tools. To prevent breakdowns, you can follow simple tips.

      Do not use the cable for another connector such as DVI. It is better to immediately purchase an HDMI cable that functions in HDMI-HDMI mode, otherwise, the TV or monitor may simply not perceive the cable, which assumes the ability to connect to several ports at the same time.

      From time to time, be sure to check the status of the ports on the TV broadcaster and personal computer. A number of defects deserve your attention.

      • Broken or rusted contacts. If such are found, then you will have to completely change the port, since the contacts are its most important component.
      • The presence of dust and dirt inside, since they can distort the incoming signals in many ways. This causes discomfort when playing audio and video content: for example, the sound is too quiet or is absent at all, the image may be distorted, or it freezes.
      • Check how well and securely the port is secured. If you notice that with any physical impact it begins to stagger, then you will have to fix it. You can do this yourself if you have the appropriate skills, or you can turn to the services of the masters of specialized service centers.

      Check the wire for physical damage.

      If its insulation is broken in some places, there are clamps, fractures, deep cuts or exposed areas, then such a cable, even if it reproduces the image, is most likely with defects.

      Moreover, such a technique can be dangerous to health and property, since there is always a risk of getting an electric shock. And the possibility of a short circuit, which often leads to fires, cannot be ruled out.
