Today, you can control various household appliances that are in the house, including a TV, using an infrared remote control. But it's not a secret for anyone that this device very often fails and ceases to fulfill the task assigned to it.

In this article, we will talk about how to determine the operability of the TV remote control, consider possible problems and options for their elimination.

How can you check?

Most likely, every TV owner has encountered such a problem that no matter how hard he tries, no matter what buttons on the remote he presses, nothing happens.

If such a device does not cope with its functional purpose, there is only one conclusion - it has broken. In this case, most people either buy a new remote control, or are in a hurry to take the old one for repair.

But before you do this or that, you need to try to test the remote control for performance at home. What is needed for this? Nothing special, or rather, you need something that, of course, every person has - a cell phone or a smartphone and a laptop.

Any of the aforementioned devices will do the trick. The thing is that digital devices that we use in everyday life have a built-in camera, with which you can check. You can also use a separate digital camera if you have one.

The remote control is a transmitter that transmits information to the device using infrared pulses. If these pulses stop coming out, then, for example, the device will not change channels on the TV.

It is impossible to determine the presence of an infrared signal with the human eye, but digital devices can do this.

Verification steps

So, first you need to decide on what you will be used for verification. Let's do this with a smartphone as an example.

The verification process consists of several stages.

  • Take a cell phone and turn on the camera on it.
  • Bring the remote to the switched on camera. Direct the camera of the phone to the infrared LED, which is located on the top in most models of remotes.
  • Press one of the buttons on the remote control - and carefully watch what the camera displays on the phone display.
  • When you press any of the buttons, the remote should emit an infrared signal that can be monitored on the phone.

At the beginning of the test, do not forget to install new batteries in the remote control - without them it will not emit an infrared signal, the same happens if they are dead.

Possible problems

During the performance check of the remote control, different situations may arise.

  • The device will emit an infrared signal, which will appear on the smartphone display as a purple light. This means that the remote is completely fixed. If the purple signal goes out after a few clicks on the button, you just need to install new batteries.
  • If the phone's camera does not pick up any signal from the remote control, most likely there is a problem with the remote control itself. This is a rather complex device, inside of which there are many different elements and compounds. In this case, it is better to contact a specialist who will examine the device and be able to determine its malfunction.

But the fact is, in most cases, repairing an old remote control will cost more than buying a new one. Probably best, if your old remote control doesn't work, buy a new device and good new batteries.

There is another possible problem that you might encounter during a check. If you determine that the remote device works, but it cannot be controlled, then the problem is in the household appliances themselves. Perhaps the TV has stopped receiving a signal from the remote control, as the signal receiver could be damaged.

Before you panic, try performing a few actions on the TV, pressing the control and channel buttons, in older models they are on the front panel, in newer ones - on the back.

AND if even after these manipulations the TV still does not respond to commands from the remote control, then bring one or the other for repair. Of course, this outcome of the check is the most sad and costly, especially if the problem still lies in the TV. Then you will have to repair it, which is not cheap, and in the most extreme case - to acquire a new one.
