Drying in natural conditions can take a long time, sometimes several years. That is why the production of slabs is impossible without special types of equipment responsible for drying wood.

In production, it is dried in a large autoclave, where the cut is left to dry at a temperature of 180-250 degrees. Drying time can range from several hours to several days. Dried wood after processing changes color, it becomes brighter and more juicy... Often, wood is baked until the color becomes very dark, almost black, while all the properties of the material are preserved.

After drying, the cuts are leveled with a milling machine, then the surface is treated with a grinding belt machine. If there are irregularities or bark around the edges, they are left and not evened out. Such natural curvature will make the finished product more original, emphasizing naturalness, which is important when decorating rooms, for example, in a loft style. After drying and processing, the boards are fixed using legs, for example, made of glass.

Then the slab is processed using a grinder, changing the nozzles with varying degrees of granularity. Usually, work begins by choosing an abrasive with the number 150, then gradually changing the nozzles, moving from numbers 240, 260 to nozzles up to 1000, 1500 or even 3000. Polishing work is carried out at the final stage, for this they use a special polishing paste and a felt disc or foam rubber.

How to do it yourself?

Most often, slabs are created at enterprises with special equipment, or at sawmills. Often, the production of such products is established directly in the forest. For work, they select trunks with a diameter of about a meter. Oak, aspen and birch are used more often, they have a peculiar texture with a beautiful pattern. Elm, poplar, larch, and pine also remain popular. Modern sawmills have special equipment that allows you to make a longitudinal cut. At home, making the right beautiful saw cut without tools is difficult and costly.

The workflow looks like this.

  • At the initial stage, preparation of the material and its processing. Be sure to make sure the material is dry. The canvas must be processed by removing unnecessary elements and sanding the surface.

The technology of the process consists in preparing the material, grinding it, pouring it with epoxy resin and further finishing. An important point is the preparation of the epoxy. The components must be mixed in the proportions indicated in the instructions. This will create a bubble-free layer. Be sure to use clean dishes when kneading. The two-component compound must be mixed thoroughly to achieve a good end result.

When applying epoxy, it is necessary to allow the mass to be evenly distributed over the surface, filling in all the irregularities. When greasing the ends, it is advisable to help distribute the mass with a hair dryer or burner.

It is impossible for the epoxy layer to overheat by more than 40 degrees.

Pouring into the box is done very carefully, without haste, avoiding the formation of bubbles. Carefully distribute the mass over the surface. If it is necessary to fill in large volumes, it is better to fill the mass in layers of 1-1.5 cm. After that, the surface is treated with a flame. This will allow the epoxy mass to spread evenly over the surface and lead to the removal of the formed bubbles.

After hardening, the box is disassembled with a scraping knife. And the sidewalls are separated with a spatula and a nail puller. At the final stage, re-milling is carried out, then the tabletop is cleaned of dust, a finishing layer is applied.
