Luxurious wide trees at a summer cottage are not uncommon. They look great and provide a shade to hide under on a hot summer day. And to make it comfortable to sit under the dense crown, you can install beautiful benches around the tree trunk.

Advantages and disadvantages

Benches around the tree are a great place to get together with the whole family or sit alone and read a book. There are a lot of advantages for such a rest and for the shops themselves, and all of them are discussed below:

  • benches will perfectly fit into the garden, because their design can be chosen independently or ordered from specialists;
  • under the crown of a tree on a bench it will be convenient to hide from the heat;
  • everyone can make a bench around the tree, because it does not require special skills;
  • you will need a minimum set of tools and materials that many already have;
  • there are many drawings posted on the Internet, among which you can choose the one that will fit in size and style.

But, despite the variety of shapes and sizes, there were some drawbacks here.

  • Wooden benches require special care throughout the year and constant coverage renewal. If you do not treat the shop with an antiseptic and oil, then the pests from the tree will certainly feast on it. Strong changes in temperature negatively affect the texture, and rains can completely ruin the benches.
  • Metal benches they get very hot during the heat and are subject to corrosion from rain. Finished benches can be of poor quality, and making them yourself is very difficult.
  • Plywood benches break easily and are short-lived even with good care.

From all this it follows that it is much easier to make a bench out of wood and varnish it.

Design options

The garden bench can be of different shapes and sizes, making it perfect for every style. You can make a bench for a summer residence with your own hands, but first you need to think over the design.

You can build a circular bench with or without a backrest and handles. The legs are best made of black painted metal, but wooden ones will also look great on the site. They can be hidden using the panel or left in plain sight.

A square bench around the tree is also a great option. If the trunk of the tree is crooked, and you cannot make a neat bench of this shape, you can depict it in the shape of a rhombus or any other polygon.

The bench can be several levels at different heightsso that every family member is comfortable, regardless of their height.

If the tree is next to a fence, the bench can be made in the form of a hemisphere that rests against the wall. The table will be a great addition to any shape bench.

Drawings and dimensions

The size of the bench depends on the thickness of the tree trunk and the desired seat height, but a three-dimensional tree with a diameter of at least 50 cm is the best option. Before starting work, it is necessary to draw up a drawing of a bench for a specific tree and indicate the dimensions there.

In the drawing, you need to depict the appearance from the side in order to better represent the result, to know how to perform the back and legs. The legs are usually 45-50 cm high, but you can make them in any length and shape. The back is made at an angle to the tree, which must be taken into account when depicting it.The best option is a few trapezoidal parts that taper towards the top.

The top view comes in handy too. Before drawing it, you need to think about the shape of the bench around the trunk - a circle, square or polygon, and the width of the seat. There should be a hole in the center of the picture. To determine its size, it is necessary to add 20-30 cm to the diameter of the tree if there is no backrest, and 30-40 if there is one. The thickness of the seat should be approximately the same as the diameter of the trunk, but no more than 60 cm for a harmonious appearance.

Polygonal circular benches are usually placed on a square base, which also needs to be drawn and dimensioned to make it easier to work with. Its sides should be less than the width of the bench and have several bars to support the seat.

Selection and processing of material

To make a beautiful bench, you will need boards and bars of different sizes. The bench will not be in the best conditions outside, so the material should be processed and prepared in advance.

First of all, you need to choose wood - it is optimal if it is larch, rosewood or Canadian cedar. If it is not possible to use such a material, you can use conifers, but soak them in advance under pressure.

After the material has already been purchased, it is necessary to cut the boards of the desired size and saturate them. This is done in order to protect the tree from mold, rotting and insects, which are abundant in the country.

Impregnation can be bought at any building or online store.

The surface should be free of dust, preferably at home or in a garage where there are no sources of dirt. After that, it is sanded using fine sandpaper, and the composition is applied with a brush or roller. When the wood is dry, a second coat is applied. You can start assembling the parts.

Important! If the impregnation does not protect from sunlight and burnout, then after the bench is ready, it must be covered with two layers of varnish.

How to make a square bench?

To make a square circular bench, you need to prepare 12 blocks for the base.

  • 4 of them should be small - tree diameter + 20-40 cm. They will form the base of the inner square, which will be adjacent to the trunk.
  • Another 4 are also of the same size, but much larger - diameter + 60-90 cm. This is an outer square.
  • 4 bars that will connect the inner and outer squares. To calculate their size, it is necessary to subtract the length of the small one from the length of the largest bar (which is calculated above) and divide by 2 - we will call the resulting number A. Number B is the width of the seat, equal to 40-60 cm.We substitute it in the formula C equal to the root of A squared + B squared.

After that, we collect the inner and outer squares using corners and self-tapping screws, and then connect them with small bars.

The next step in the step-by-step instructions is to cut the planks for the seat. The width of the board can vary from 20 to 30 cm, so the number may vary. You will need 6-8 boards, the length of which is 5-7 cm longer than the side of the outer square, and 6 more, which correspond to the side of the inner square. They all need to be processed.

Boards are laid on the base, the distance between them is no more than 1 cm, starting from one side. The first 3-4 boards completely cover one side, then small and large again. They are screwed on with self-tapping screws. It remains to make the legs and back - and the square bench is ready.

Making a round bench

When working on a round bench, it is recommended to follow the diagram and step-by-step instructions described below. First you need to prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

  • screws or self-tapping screws;
  • boards and bars;
  • corners;
  • screwdriver;
  • saw.

Sawing out elements

You need to start manufacturing with templates, they are made in advance to make it easier to make a flat and high-quality bench.

  1. Add 15-30 cm to the diameter of the tree trunk and divide this number by 1.75.The resulting length is necessary to compose the inner hexagon, it is on it that the first board is measured.
  2. 3-4 boards are applied to each other, on the first you need to draw 2 points - the beginning and the end, between which the resulting distance will be.
  3. After that, you need to measure an angle of 30 degrees from each point and draw a line at that angle on all boards.
  4. Cut off the template and repeat 5 more times.

Assembly

The cut boards are assembled, it is important to do it out of the blue and fasten them with high-quality materials. After preparing the templates, you can build a shop. All 6 templates are folded together and twisted with self-tapping screws.

You can attach a backrest to the bench in any style from similar templates. - one side is the same length as the first stick, and the opposite is calculated using the same formula, but the diameter of the tree decreases, because the tree becomes smaller. Any angle or 90 degrees. The back is attached using corners and screws.

Legs from bars are made quickly and easily, 12 elements are needed to make - inner and outer leg at the junction of the two templates. The upper part of the legs is attached to the boards with screws, and the lower part is buried in the ground and then filled with cement.

The last step is to varnish the bench and add some decorative elements. You can paint it, apply stickers or metal flowers. It is important to do this after 2-3 coats of varnish have dried.
