Parquet is used to cover the floor in many apartments and houses. But its service life is not very long, and after a while it requires repair. Putty can help with this, which is available both in liquid form and in the form of a special paste.

Application

Putty parquet is the cheapest way to repair the floor yourself. With this process, you can completely recreate the original appearance of the floor. If necessary, you need to remove the old layer of the coating or perform a sanding. When dry, the putty will be completely invisible and evenly cover the wooden floor. The mixture is mostly colorless, but it is quite effective against any chips.

The tool is used for parquet flooring in order to eliminate cracks.that appear due to poor-quality installation of floor material or due to changes in humidity and temperature conditions in the room. The renovation process can be carried out simultaneously with sanding: at the time when a layer of varnish is applied. The main purpose of the putty is to reduce surface defects: various cracks and other imperfections. At the beginning of work, the parquet is covered with a special compound to protect it, and after that a mixture is applied that repeats the shade of the floor.

It perfectly seals all gaps in the floor covering. You can use it even without specially preparing the parquet. When the work is finished, the parquet flooring will regain its original appearance. The texture of the wooden planks will be completely restored, and the areas treated with the mixture will not stand out from the general background.

Such a mixture for flooring can be prepared with your own hands or purchased at a hardware store ready-made.

According to the method of application, the putty is divided into several types:

  • Basic or starting grout. This option is used to eliminate significant disadvantages of parquet.
  • The second group is the finishing one. She completes the treatment of the floor.
  • The third type includes universal compounds that can be used on wooden surfaces. They combine the characteristics of the previous two groups.

Also, the putty is divided into subspecies depending on the composition.

Below are some of these subspecies options:

  • Gypsum-based mixture. It is very popular because of its versatility, it adheres well to the flooring and has a low cost. Both base and finishing grout are used.
  • The oil-based putty is suitable for parquets made from different types of wood. Its disadvantage is the long drying time. This is due to its oily composition.
  • An acrylic-based product is used to eliminate and mask small floor defects. The mixture is environmentally friendly, as its basis is water. It is elastic and tolerates mechanical damage well. Its disadvantages include poor adhesion to the edges of cracks after drying. After some time, the crack enlarges, and because of this, the putty can fall off from it.
  • The next type is alkyd, made from soybean and linseed oil resins. The mixture is very viscous, elastic, excellent for grinding.
  • Latex-based putty is similar to the previous look, it is also a finish. It is used depending on the unevenness of the parquet flooring to avoid cracks. It fixes perfectly on a smooth surface and has the property of vapor permeability. Its cost is several times higher than the gypsum type.
  • Dispersion is a selection of all the necessary components for the preparation of the putty with your own hands.

First you need to choose the desired tone so that it matches the color of the flooring. The composition is easy enough to prepare. It is necessary to mix the dust particles left after sanding with the purchased base. This will give the color the same color as the wooden planks of the parquet flooring. You can putty in an even layer, applying the substance to cracks and irregularities up to six millimeters in size.

The most budgetary primer recipe has PVA glue as a base. Due to its low cost, this method is widely used.

There is a division according to the type of the main substance of the mixture:

  • Parquet grout, which has water as the main substance, dries quickly. Also, it does not produce toxic fumes if the temperature is high, therefore it is an environmentally friendly material and completely harmless. But it is not recommended to use it for grouting hard wood species: chestnut, oak, cedar and other surfaces.
  • Another type is parquet mix. For example, Kiilto Gap. This option is based on a solvent. It is versatile and suitable for any type of flooring. This putty is more durable than a water-based mixture.

Among the minuses, one can note an unpleasant aroma due to solvents in the composition and flammability. In addition, it adheres perfectly to varnished surfaces and bare wood.

Subtleties of choice

There are a huge number of options for parquet putty on the building materials market, so when choosing it, you must adhere to some tips.

The plastic mixture achieves the greatest effect when applied to the floor. It also dries very quickly and is excellent for sanding. The product must be safe for the environment and humans, as it will constantly contact the surface. In addition, the putty for parquet, after a while after drying, should not come out of cracks, split, break, grind, crack and shrink, decreasing in volume.

If the fixation with the coating is at the highest level, then the grout will last quite a long time.

In addition to the finished composition, you can use a special dry mixture for creating your own putty. In this case, it is best to choose products that will contain many small particles in their base, which will allow you to get the most uniform parquet surface after applying the grout itself.

Before using the product, the floor covering must be prepared: cleaned of dirt and sanded - and only then can the wooden floor be primed. Adhesive primers are ideal for this. They provide excellent adhesion of the grout to the entire surface of the parquet.

The main criteria for choosing a parquet putty are the following positions:

  • Comfort of use. When applied to the parquet surface to be treated, comfort is ensured by the plasticity of a purchased or self-prepared mixture.
  • The composition must be safe and environmentally friendly. Among its main substances there should be no harmful and toxic components, because a person will constantly be in the immediate vicinity of the floor covering.
  • In addition, the dried layers of the grout used should not dry out and disintegrate, since shrinkage deformation inevitably leads to the formation of various kinds of fractures, cracks, cracks. Do not forget that the operational terms directly depend on the quality of the connection and fixation of the grout with the parquet flooring itself.
  • The following rule of using a primer is applicable not only when it is used for parquet flooring, but is also an important criterion when applying the mixture to other types of coatings.Cleaning of the treated area of the floor is very important: it is necessary to sand and prime with a product that will be ideally matched and suitable for this type of wood covering.

All this must be taken into account when choosing a high-quality and suitable putty for parquet. Its correct choice will directly affect the service life and appearance of the wooden surface.
