Drywall is the material with which you can make any interior special. He is able to show the uniqueness of the wall and ceiling designs. However, in order to realize the potential, it is often necessary to paint this base. We understand the intricacies of painting drywall: we study the process from tools to step-by-step instructions.

Peculiarities

Drywall is especially popular, it has a light weight and a pliable structure. GKL is used mainly as a finishing material to create additional decorations. However, its characteristic white-gray shade looks ugly and poor. Therefore, many are in a hurry to independently eliminate the lack of appearance with the help of paint.

Drywall is a fire-resistant and durable material. It perfectly maintains air circulation, which makes it different from other building materials. This is also a small disadvantage: the porous structure absorbs moisture. When painting, excess water is absorbed into the drywall. To avoid unaesthetic consequences, it is required to prepare the material for painting. The surface should be prepared with a putty; it is important to reinforce the joints. In this case, the surface must be flat. Sandpaper will help to eliminate errors.

What can you paint with?

Finishing work is carried out using different paints. To choose the right paint, you can study the nuances of each.

Water-based

In the construction market, this paint is sold exclusively in white. With the help of special dyes (colors), you can create any desired shade. In this case, liquid paint differs in color from the dried version. In order not to be mistaken with the selection of a shade, you can contact specialists or sellers who have a special apparatus that allows you to calculate the required shade. The device calculates the exact amount of color to achieve the desired color gradient.

Water-based paint is expensive due to the fact that it self-aligns when applied. It removes all imperfections of the gypsum board surface, forming an even matte layer. In addition to the matte surface, there are impurities that can create a beautiful glossy surface. Based on this, it is necessary to clearly determine the choice of paint before buying (the glossy surface will not hide any drawback). Consumption per square meter will be 0.2 kg.

Alkyd

Alkyd enamel is less toxic than aqueous emulsion mixture. It does not hit the wallet hard because it does not require large volumes when applied. However, after drying, it leaves a glossy surface on which all the inaccuracies of drywall are visible.

Acrylic

For finishing work on drywall, experts recommend using acrylic paint. It is water-based, which improves resistance to high humidity conditions. You can profitably sell paint in the bathroom and kitchen. Acrylic dye has a glossy and matte surface type, but the latter result is more difficult to achieve. A kilogram of acrylic paint is enough for 5 m2.This paint is expensive due to its high quality and acceptable level of toxicity.

Oil

This type of paint is undesirable for painting drywall. The components of the paint and varnish material will poison the body for a long time. Oil paint has a specific odor that irritates mucous membranes and causes headaches.

Silicate and silicone

Silicate paint prevents mold, excludes the formation of an environment for the appearance of microorganisms. It is a relevant option for painting material in conditions with high moisture levels. Silicone paint, due to its plasticity, covers various cracks and practically does not require preparatory work. However, it dries quickly, which reduces its popularity in finishing work. A protective film forms immediately after application. When choosing a decorative paint, experts recommend not to skimp: cheap options are of low quality and high levels of toxicity.

Preparatory work

It is especially important to prepare drywall for painting: the type of surface depends on the quality of the work performed. The main task at this stage is the treatment with a soil solution, which prevents the ingress of excess moisture into the structure of the drywall. This procedure is necessary in order to avoid unpleasant consequences in the form of an uneven painted surface. Stains cannot be painted over even with a new layer of paint, as drywall will continue to absorb water, leaving a dry residue outside.

Drywall preparation algorithm

It is possible to process drywall clearly following the presented algorithm:

  • Preparation begins with a primer. Particular attention is paid to the gaps between the drywall parts and the grooves of the self-tapping screws. Before proceeding to the next step, you should make sure that the composition is completely dry.
  • For even painting, it is necessary to fill the space between the parts with a putty. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the protruding part of the self-tapping screws does not sink and does not rise above the flat surface of the base.
  • To prevent damage to the corners of drywall, you must put on special corners that are fixed with putty.
  • Reinforcement of the seams is carried out by means of a bandage tape made of paper.
  • Then a new layer of putty is applied to completely level the surface. It should be sanded with sandpaper and primed again.
  • The renewed surface must dry out: paint application is unacceptable on a damp surface.

How to paint with your own hands?

Drywall painting is carried out with a brush or a construction roller. The foam rubber option should be discarded: even with careful and accurate application of the composition to the surface with the help of this tool, streaks remain. The paint lays down evenly under the roller equipped with natural bristles.

To paint drywall correctly, you need to decide on the length of the pile:

  • For a material with a shiny surface, fine pile (no longer than 5 mm) is required.
  • Medium-sized villi are relevant for matte surfaces.
  • Long pile (over 8 mm) is ideal for optimal texture.
  • It is better to paint corners and other hard-to-reach places with a flat brush up to 80 mm wide (the roller is too massive, it is impossible for them to paint the surface in such places).

The order of work must be performed following the step-by-step instructions, taking into account the subtleties of the process:

  • The paint gets its final appearance after applying the third layer. If you paint drywall only once, the layer of putty will look ugly through the finishing material.
  • The boundaries of the site are painted first. You should carefully paint with a brush the ledges of the corners and decorative stucco molding (including the chandelier). These manipulations are necessary to avoid streaks on the ceiling after using a roller to paint the main area.
  • After the paint on the periphery of the area has dried, take a roller and completely dip it into the paint. To distribute the same amount of finishing material, it should be carried out several times along one line.

Experts recommend not to rush with a new immersion of the roller in the paint. As soon as all the material leaves the pile of the instrument, you should put things in order on the newly painted area. To do this, it is carried out with a still wet roller over the surface of the painted ceiling. If more than a few minutes have passed since the application, you do not need to carry out this procedure, because the finishing material has already dried.

The technology of applying a new layer consists in the perpendicular coating of the previous one. However, you should wait until the paint is completely dry before doing this. At the end of the work, the surface should be checked for flaws. For this purpose, drywall is illuminated with a bright lamp at a slight angle. Stains and visible imperfections are cleaned off and repainted.

When using enamel, proceed differently. The finishing material is applied in zigzag movements in two layers. Experts recommend applying the paint with a semi-dry roller for even application. The technology is often used for "brick".

Types of paints

The following types of paints are especially in demand in the construction market for paints and varnishes:

  • alkyd enamel;
  • Oil paint;
  • acrylic paint;
  • water-based mixture.

Oil paint and alkyd enamel are equally good for finishing work in rooms with a high concentration of moisture. However, they have a high level of toxicity. This disadvantage has to be eliminated by airing the room. The positive characteristics are the lowest consumption per 1 m2 and resistance to all types of leaks.

Water-based paint prefers costs in large sizes. The water-based emulsion maintains its leading position in the market, thanks to the creation of a matte and pleasant to the touch surface. The main advantage of this material is the ability to obtain any shade, thanks to color schemes. The only drawback is that this finishing material is not suitable for painting in conditions with high temperature and humidity.

In bathroom

Plasterboard painting in the bathroom has important nuances: a high level of humidity is always maintained in this room. When choosing a paint, you should start from water-based materials, which create the necessary condensation. It resists excess water and contributes to the long-term performance of the finishing material.

After finishing work, the bathroom should be locked until the paint is completely dry. Professionals do not recommend purchasing too bright colors for this room due to the fact that over time they will fade and look ugly. Depending on the choice, the paint dries from 4 hours to a day. During this time, you must not touch the surface and allow drafts, since only the surface layer will dry.

Tips & Tricks

To avoid unpleasant consequences and frustration when painting, experts advise focusing on some of the nuances:

  • When finished, the drywall should look nice. For painting, it is necessary to take into account the type of room. For the bathroom and kitchen, choose a water-based paint that is resistant to moisture.
  • The method of application affects the appearance of the surface. For gypsum board, the best option is a roller with a pile of medium length.
  • When applying paint of different shades, separate the surface with chalk or masking tape.
  • It is better to apply the last coat of paint along the room, while painting should be started from the periphery from the ceiling to the floor.
  • Before starting work, it is recommended to stir the paint well and thin it if necessary. The water-based version is mixed with water; it is better to save solvents for enamel.
  • Different types of paints change their original color when dried. The water-based mixture fades by several shades, the enamel and oil paint, on the contrary, darken.

Even if it was not planned to paint drywall, it should be done. With improper transportation, drywall arrives at the apartment with dents, over time, the corners may go astray, and the caps of the screws will peek out reproachfully from the material. Putty will help to eliminate these problems. However, even a surface primed with putty will not look attractive.
