The partially remontant variety of raspberries, the Yellow Giant, is considered the largest of its kind. The honey-golden translucent fruits are very loved by gardeners for their extraordinary delicious properties, and the plant itself demonstrates unpretentiousness. Even an inexperienced summer resident will cope with its planting and cultivation.

Breeding history of the variety

The cultivation of the variety was carried out by Professor V.V. Kichina on the basis of VSTiSP of Moscow. The success was announced in 1979. When crossing, a white-fruited seedling from a nursery at the Ivanovskaya experimental station and a large-fruited variety Maroseyka were used. The yellow giant became one of the first re-flowering raspberry species to spread to the USSR. The variety is included in the State Register.

Description of the variety

Dessert variety Yellow giant is distinguished by its ability to form a powerful, spreading bush up to 250 cm high. The branches are straight, slightly branched, covered with straight greenish thorns along the entire length. The leaves are rich green, with denticles at the edges, large in size, with a wrinkled surface. The flowers are bisexual, white; additional cross pollination is not required.

Ripening terms

The variety belongs to the mid-early group. Long-term fruiting, from mid-July to late autumn.

Growing regions

The variety belongs to the category approved for growing in the conditions of the North-West region. Zoned for the Moscow region and colder climatic conditions.

Yield

The yield is high, there are 4-5 harvests per season. Average yields reach 5-12 kg of berries per bush.

Berries and their taste

The tasting grade is very high - 5 points. At the same time, keeping quality and transportability of berries is minimal. The fruits of the Yellow Giant are very large, blunt-conical, yellow in color. The berry mass reaches 5-10 g. Inside there is a juicy pulp with a pronounced aroma and characteristic sweetness.

How to choose a raspberry seedling
Due to its unpretentiousness, raspberries live in almost every garden plot. But in order to get tasty berries, you must first plant a healthy and strong seedling. In nurseries, shops and private sellers, you can find a huge assortment of seedlings, but how to determine their quality and be sure of the abundance of fruiting already upon purchase?

Growing features

When growing the Yellow Giant on the site, it is worth giving it the most sunny place, leaving a distance of 1 m between the bushes. The use of trellises or props is mandatory. Since the variety grows early in the spring, it is recommended to place seedlings with an open root system in the climatic zone of the Moscow region in the ground in the fall. Container containers do not have such restrictions.

Site selection and soil preparation

When choosing a location, in addition to lighting requirements, it is worth considering the sensitivity of the plant to the composition of the soil. Raspberry The yellow giant grows well on acidic soils. At an elevated level of groundwater, it is recommended to place seedlings on a hill - natural or bulk. It is forbidden to place new seedlings where raspberries were previously grown. Places that are heavily blown by the wind will not work either.

Planting the Yellow Giant raspberry is recommended using the trench method in sandy loam or loamy soil. Plants are arranged in a row, preparing for them an elongated ditch with a depth of 2 bayonets of a shovel. The lower soil layer is removed, instead organic matter is placed in the trench - humus, leaves, peat and straw. In this form, the planting place is left for 2 months, only then the cuttings or plants in containers are transferred to a new place. In fertile soils, planting is possible without preparation.

A plentiful and high-quality harvest in the future depends on the correct technology of planting a raspberry bush. It is necessary to choose the right planting material, determine the location and prepare the site.
Raspberry garter is a difficult and painstaking task. This requires time and imagination. But on the other hand, the benefits from this process are enormous. Thanks to the garter, the fruits ripen more intensively and regularly. Bushes are much less deformed, branches do not break off. After the garter, the berries are better preserved, and the greatest achievement at the same time is the convenience of harvesting.

Pruning

Pre-winter pruning is mandatory. With the first cold weather, the entire aboveground part is cut off. Fruiting occurs on the shoots of the current and last year. Sometimes they are left, but this is not necessary.

The raspberry pruning process is an essential and essential part of caring for your garden and the key to harvesting large, juicy berries. Without pruning, raspberry shoots lose their strength and cease to bear fruit. It is very easy to avoid thickening of the raspberry tree: you only need pruning - in the spring, summer and autumn months.

Watering and feeding

Raspberries of this variety need regular watering. In normal periods, with sufficient soil moisture, 1 moisture per 7 days is enough. In drought, intense heat, the frequency increases, watering is performed every other day. It is important not to use cold water for it, which reduces the plant's resistance to diseases.

1 week after planting, the root zone of the raspberry is sprinkled with wood ash. Such dressing is carried out after abundant watering in an amount of about 200 g per 1 m2. This will contribute to the development of the root system, scare off pests. If potash fertilizers or superphosphate were placed in the hole when planting, you will not have to additionally feed the plants during the growing season. In the absence of such support, they are introduced in the spring by watering or in the fall in dry form into the root zone in the form of a complex.

One of the conditions for proper care of raspberries is proper watering. The rules for watering raspberries are the same for all varieties and varieties of this garden plant. Moistening should be carried out if the soil has dried out by 5 cm or more.
One of the most important conditions for growing large and sweet raspberries is timely fertilization. For each stage of development of the raspberry bush, different feeding is required. Fertilizers that are used at the beginning of the growing season of the plant are not suitable during flowering and ripening of berries.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

The plant is frost-resistant. Withstands a drop in atmospheric temperatures down to -30 degrees. It can freeze out after a thaw, in this case, young shoots must be covered if they have already begun to grow. With a two-year growing cycle, the shoots left are pruned, tied in bunches, and bent to the ground. A snow shelter is constructed of sawdust, earth, or non-woven material.

Preparing raspberries for winter is another of the stages of berry care. If you start preparing raspberries for wintering in time, then next year you will get a rich harvest of delicious and sweet berries. Winter preparation activities include pruning, feeding, pest control, watering and shelter.

Diseases and pests

The variety is very resistant to most common raspberry diseases and pests. This is due to the fact that the above-ground part of the bush is removed annually, leaving the pests no chance of a successful wintering. In terms of its growing season, the Yellow Giant also outstrips the development of insects, so there is practically no chance to find spoiled or wormy fruits on the branches.

However, it is worth checking periodically for pests. For this, a film is spread under the seedlings. The bushes themselves are shaken. If insects are found, they are collected and burned. As a preventive measure, before flowering, you can spray the bushes with organophosphate fertilizers.

Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.

Reproduction

The usual breeding method for the Yellow Giant is by separating the root growth. But there is a subtlety here - in young bushes, it is not formed too abundantly. But plants over 10 years old give it very generously. In this case, the seedling is separated from the mother bush with a shovel bayonet, together with a part of the rhizome, and transferred to a new place.

There are many ways to breed raspberries. Raspberries can be diluted with root cuttings, woody cuttings and root cuttings. Regardless of the method of berry propagation, a number of requirements must be observed to ensure the receipt of high-quality planting material.

Review overview

When planning to acquire Yellow Giant raspberries on your site, you should properly study the reviews about it. According to gardeners, this plant is perfect for families with children - they like sweet fruits of an unusual color more than red ones, and do not cause allergic reactions. This berry is useful even for people with diabetes due to the peculiarities of its chemical composition. The fruits, indeed, turn out to be large, especially on shoots of 1 year old, while the bush practically does not require attention to itself during the season.

There are also disadvantages. If not picked in time, the berries may fall off the branches. In addition, the variety is sensitive to thickening, it grows worse in the shade, and needs to limit growth. The branches are quite thorny - this can be a problem when harvesting.
