Raspberry Glen Coe, synonymous with Glen Coe, is a versatile hybrid with extraordinary qualities and appearance. Many gardeners consider it a masterpiece of selection achievements - the field of application of the berry includes fresh consumption, canning and winemaking (tinctures, liqueurs). High transportability allows you to deliver crops over long distances.

Breeding history of the variety

The Glen Coe hybrid raspberry is the result of the painstaking work of Scottish breeders under the direction of Dr. Derek. The originators managed to bring out a variety with a berry of amazing taste and unusual color. This happened in the distant 80s of the last century, when a new purple berry was obtained from the parent varieties Manger and Glen Prosen. As subsequent harvests showed, the variety turned out to be so versatile that its popularity is constantly growing.

Description of the variety

Raspberry Glen Coe is a high, up to 2 meters, bush with a spreading crown formed by flexible semi-spreading branches. The vine requires obligatory garters on trellises or supports. The bush reaches 120 cm in diameter. The width depends on the flexibility of the shoots, the large-fruited berries and the weight of the fruit brushes.

The hybrid variety does not have thorns, which greatly facilitates harvesting, only a small number of them are observed at the very roots. Raspberry Glen Coe is a non-remotant, self-fertile plant in its second year. In the first season, flower buds are laid. Shoots are covered with complex odd-pinnate or trifoliate dark green leaves. The unpretentious variety has moderate shoot formation.

Ripening terms

The first berries ripen in mid-June, followed by long-term continuous fruiting until September.

Growing regions

The variety grows in the countries of Europe, Ukraine, Belarus and practically in all regions of Russia, where it is possible to grow this berry. In the middle lane, in the Urals and in the Siberian region, shoots are bent to the ground for the winter.

Yield

Raspberries of the Glen Coe variety are characterized by high yields - up to 6 kg of berries are harvested from one bush.

Berries and their taste

Medium-sized rounded purple-black berry has a delicate sweet and sour taste with raspberry-blackberry notes and an excellent, pronounced aroma. Juicy but firm flesh contributes to excellent transportability. The weight of a ripe berry is 5 g, the fruits are not prone to shedding, they grow in clusters of 7-10 pieces.

How to choose a raspberry seedling
Due to its unpretentiousness, raspberries live in almost every garden plot. But in order to get tasty berries, you must first plant a healthy and strong seedling. In nurseries, shops and private sellers you can find a huge assortment of seedlings, but how to determine their quality and be sure of the abundance of fruiting already upon purchase?

Growing features

Due to its characteristic features (height, spreading), the variety is grown in rows, which greatly facilitates its care. Saplings, cuttings are planted in early spring and autumn. Row spacing at least 1.5-2 meters, between bushes 40-50 cm.The root collar requires caution - when it deepens, the plant may undergo a fungal disease. Young plants are shortened to 40-50 cm, this will help to build up the root system.

Site selection and soil preparation

Glen Coe prefers loose, fertile soil. For the variety, the proximity to close groundwater, swampy areas is excluded - its root system does not tolerate long-term moisture. The selected area is pre-enriched with organic matter, complex fertilizers, at the same time, the acidity level is controlled - raspberries do not like acidic soils.

A plentiful and high-quality harvest in the future depends on the correct technology of planting a raspberry bush. It is necessary to choose the right planting material, determine the location and prepare the site.
Raspberry garter is a difficult and painstaking task. This requires time and imagination. But on the other hand, the benefits from this process are enormous. Thanks to the garter, the fruits ripen more intensively and regularly. Bushes are much less deformed, branches do not break off. After the garter, the berries are better preserved, and the greatest achievement at the same time is the convenience of harvesting.

Pruning

After harvesting, two-year old shoots are removed together with sick and poorly developed first-year children. You should not leave more than 6 shoots on the bush - thickening leads to chopping of the berries, the tops are cut off to the support level. On the trellis, the stems are arranged in a fan, with a distance of 15-20 cm between the branches.

The raspberry pruning process is an essential and essential part of caring for your garden and the key to harvesting large, juicy berries. Without pruning, raspberry shoots lose their strength and cease to bear fruit. It is very easy to avoid thickening of the raspberry tree: you only need pruning - in the spring, summer and autumn months.

Watering and feeding

During the dry period, the plant needs additional watering, although it is highly drought-resistant, which will allow for a high yield. Given the low occurrence of the root system (only 40 centimeters deep), the roots can dry out critically, which will negatively affect not only the yield, but also the general condition of the bush. Timely watering is especially important during flowering, budding, and berry pouring. Humus, compost, mineral fertilizers are used as top dressing according to the standard raspberry care scheme.

One of the conditions for proper care of raspberries is proper watering. The rules for watering raspberries are the same for all varieties and varieties of this garden plant. Moistening should be carried out if the soil has dried out by 5 cm or more.
One of the most important conditions for growing large and sweet raspberries is timely fertilization. For each stage of development of the raspberry bush, different feeding is required. Fertilizers that are used at the beginning of the growing season of the plant are not suitable during flowering and ripening of berries.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

The hybrid is distinguished by good frost resistance, however, in conditions of risky farming, it needs protective measures. The shoots left for wintering are bent down, pinned to the ground, covered with non-woven material or mulch.

Preparing raspberries for winter is another of the stages of berry care. If you start preparing raspberries for wintering in time, then next year you will get a rich harvest of delicious and sweet berries. Winter preparation activities include pruning, feeding, pest control, watering and shelter.

Diseases and pests

Despite the increased resistance to most diseases, preventive measures are needed. This is a treatment with fungicides for fungal diseases, insecticides for pests.

Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.

Reproduction

Glen Koe propagates by traditional methods - dividing the bush, cuttings, rooting cuttings. All three methods allow you to get new planting material quickly and without much hassle.

There are many ways to breed raspberries. Raspberries can be diluted with root cuttings, woody cuttings and root cuttings. Regardless of the method of berry propagation, a number of requirements must be observed to ensure the receipt of high-quality planting material.
