Raspberry Glen Ample (synonyms Glen Ample, Glen Ample) is a versatile variety, whose berries are suitable for fresh consumption and canning, and also perfectly tolerate freezing, retaining their shape and taste after defrosting. The variety belongs to the standard, among gardeners there is a definition - a raspberry tree.

Breeding history of the variety

The authorship in the breeding of the hybrid belongs to the Scottish Institute of Plant Industry named after James Hutton in the city of Dundee (Szkocki Instytucie Produkcji Roslinnej w Dundee). Glen Ample became known in 1996. Outwardly, the shrub, indeed, resembles a tree-like plant, hung with bright, as if illuminated from within, lantern berries at the time of harvest. The breeders used the method of distant crossing in their work, which allowed them in the end to combine the best properties of the Glen Prosen and Meeker raspberries. The new hybrid gained height, power, high vitality even in a harsh climate, good health, excellent yield, taste, transportability.

Description of the variety

The vigorous upright self-fertile hybrid Glen Ampl belongs to non-repairable varieties - the plant bears fruit on the shoots of the second year. A distinctive feature is the structure of the bush. One shoot comes from the root, which gives life to 20-30 hard lateral branches. Subject to agricultural technology and in favorable conditions, the plant is able to reach 3 meters in height. Raspberries need a garter on the trellises, because together with the harvest, which is more than 20 large berries on each branch, a high load on the stem is created.

Glen Ample has a powerful root system, a central shoot (stem), green at the beginning, gets a lignified structure in the second year of life, is painted in a reddish-brown tint, may have a whitish bloom on the bark. Large, slightly wrinkled leaves of a dark green color are located alternately, the shoots do not have thorns, with the exception of the lower part of the plant. During flowering, the raspberry is covered with large white flowers, which contributes to its decorative effect.

Ripening terms

The hybrid belongs to the mid-late varieties - the fruiting period falls in the second or third decade of July. In the more southern regions of our country, harvesting begins in mid-June.

Growing regions

Glen Ample is adapted for growing in a European climate, grows well in Ukraine, Belarus and in the middle latitudes, characterized by warm summers and snowy winters.

Yield

The hybrid variety has high yields - up to 4-6 kg per bush and 20 tons per hectare. Yields are stable, fruits ripen along the entire length of the shoot.

Berries and their taste

The organoleptic properties of Glen Ample are evaluated by 9 points on a 10-point system. Medium-sized round-conical berries weigh 4-5 grams. The firm juicy pulp has a delicate sweet taste with a light pleasant sourness and a bright red, even carmine color, with a rich raspberry aroma. For transportation, the berries are harvested at the time of the onset of technical maturity, but even during physiological ripeness, the fruits do not fall off the vine for a long time and retain their presentation.

How to choose a raspberry seedling
Due to its unpretentiousness, raspberries live in almost every garden plot. But in order to get tasty berries, you must first plant a healthy and strong seedling. In nurseries, shops and private sellers, you can find a huge assortment of seedlings, but how to determine their quality and be sure of the abundance of fruiting already upon purchase?

Growing features

Glen Ample agrotechnical requirements are no different from traditional varieties of raspberries. The hybrid prefers well-lit places, but with light shading in the afternoon, otherwise the berry may begin to wither and dry. In summer cottages, a distance between rows of up to 2.5 m is observed, or a one-line landing is made. The traditional opinion of most gardeners: it is better to plant raspberries in the fall, but they take root well after the spring planting. During the summer season, the seedling manages to grow an excellent root system, and in winter it leaves a strong and healthy plant.

Site selection and soil preparation

The variety grows well on all types of soil, but its yield directly depends on the fertility of the soil. The soil must have all the necessary trace elements and organic matter. Preference is given to loams with a light loose structure with the addition of peat and sand. When preparing pits, the organization of a drainage layer is needed, since the hybrid does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Low-lying, swampy, as well as areas with a close occurrence of groundwater are contraindicated. Before planting, the soil is filled with organic matter and complex mineral fertilizers, providing a young plant with adequate nutrition for a couple of years.

A plentiful and high-quality harvest in the future depends on the correct technology of planting a raspberry bush. It is necessary to choose the right planting material, determine the location and prepare the site.
Garter raspberries is a difficult and painstaking task. This requires time and imagination. But on the other hand, the benefits from this process are enormous. Thanks to the garter, the fruits ripen more intensively and regularly. Bushes are much less deformed, branches do not break off. After the garter, the berries are better preserved, and the greatest achievement at the same time is the convenience of harvesting.

Pruning

The height of the bushes has led to the fact that it has become the norm for gardeners, especially those who grow the variety on an industrial scale, to use the braiding method. In this case, the vine of the second year is not cut, its tops are braided around the wire of the trellis at about a meter height, making it comfortable to harvest the future harvest.

The second method is double pruning, which allows you to form a "raspberry tree". The replacement shoots are cut at the beginning of the growing season, shortening them to 1 meter. In the middle of summer, a second pruning-pinching of the lateral shoots that have grown during this time is carried out. This is how a bush resembling a tree is obtained.

The raspberry pruning process is an essential and essential step in caring for your garden and the key to harvesting large, juicy berries. Without pruning, raspberry shoots lose their strength and cease to bear fruit. It is very easy to avoid thickening of the raspberry tree: you only need pruning - in the spring, summer and autumn months.

Watering and feeding

Top dressing begins in the spring of the third year, by which time the young plantings have already "eaten" the nutrients introduced during planting. In the spring, organic matter and nitrogen fertilizers are introduced, provoking a rapid growth of the vegetative mass. In summer, plants need complex fertilizers, which include potassium and trace elements, in autumn it is time to introduce phosphorus-potassium compounds. As for watering, during the dry period, raspberries need additional moisture in the spring, during the period of flowering and budding. Recommended irrigation rates are from 30 to 40 liters of water under the bush.

One of the conditions for proper care of raspberries is proper watering. The rules for watering raspberries are the same for all varieties and varieties of this garden plant. Moistening should be carried out if the soil has dried out by 5 cm or more.
One of the most important conditions for growing large and sweet raspberries is timely fertilization. For each stage of development of the raspberry bush, different feeding is required. Fertilizers that are used at the beginning of the growing season of the plant are not suitable during flowering and ripening of berries.

Frost resistance and preparation for winter

High frost resistance allows the bushes to tolerate winters well. However, in the middle lane, the plant needs additional protection in order to endure frosts down to minus 30-35 degrees without loss. The shoots are untied from the trellises, bent to the ground and covered with non-woven agrofibre, sprinkled with mulch, spruce branches.

Preparing raspberries for winter is another of the stages of berry care. If you start preparing raspberries for wintering in time, then next year you will get a rich harvest of delicious and sweet berries. Winter preparation activities include pruning, feeding, pest control, watering and shelter.

Diseases and pests

Glen Ample has a high resistance to diseases - 8 points on a 10-point scale. It is important to respect the possibility of airing the aisles. Thickening can provoke the appearance of powdery mildew. Fungicides are used as prevention of fungal diseases, insecticides are used against pests.

Unfortunately, raspberries, like other plants, do not bypass various diseases and pests. Only by armed with the knowledge and the necessary means for this, you can cope with such troubles. To help the plant, it is very important to be able to recognize the disease in time and begin timely treatment.

Reproduction

There are no problems with the reproduction of a hybrid - it gives a sufficient number of offspring. By separating them from the mother bush, the gardener will receive a lot of planting material.

There are many ways to breed raspberries. Raspberries can be diluted with root cuttings, woody cuttings and root cuttings. Regardless of the method of berry propagation, a number of requirements must be observed to ensure the receipt of high-quality planting material.

Review overview

Most gardeners, like farmers, note the high decorativeness of Glen Ample and its taste. Raspberry lovers appreciate it for its excellent keeping quality of the berry - elastic pulp allows transporting the crop for sale over long distances. Nowadays, many people prefer freezing to heat treatment, and the hybrid is ideal for this purpose. Its berries retain their shape after defrosting and can serve as a decoration for desserts, a festive table in winter.
