Often the final stage in the design of any decoration or the manufacture of a decorative item is the coating of the surface with varnish, because it can be used to cover different surfaces: metal, wood, treated with plaster. There is a varnish for indoor and outdoor use.

The features of the choice of this coating depend on what surface is to be processed and on the characteristics of the varnish itself, since there are many different types.

Peculiarities

Varnishes differ in their composition and method of application. Each product also has its own characteristics that make this or that varnish more convenient in a particular case.

Urethane, for example, is able to protect many surfaces from any damage. These include wood, metal, brick, stone, concrete, tiles. The main purpose of this coating is to protect surfaces.

Marker varnish is considered unique in its properties.... The paint and varnish composition is made using polyurethane, acrylic, epoxy resins. After covering the walls with such varnish, their surface becomes identical to the whiteboard. Drawings can be applied to this wall using markers, and if desired, they can be deleted. Marker varnish is used to cover not only walls, but also furniture and decorative elements.

Thanks to varnishing, several goals can be achieved: to strengthen the surface to be treated, to protect it from external influences in the form of high humidity, mold and mildew, temperature extremes, and detergents.

Decorative varnishes give the surface an extra shine or a certain shade.

Types and characteristics

Water-based compositions are in great demand for interior work. They are glossy and matte, dissolve easily with water. They differ from each other in that some contain acrylic, while others contain polyurethane.

There are also two-component varnishes, which contain both. They are used for interior decoration. Besides the fact that they create a protective layer for the surface and give it an attractive appearance, these varnishes are convenient to work with, since they are practically odorless.

Polyurethane

Such compositions are considered the most durable and are suitable for rooms where there are a large number of people and there is a risk of surface damage. Such premises include large shopping centers, medical and educational institutions.

Acrylic

These mixtures, in contrast to the polyurethane version, are much less adapted to negative influences, and they will not save from moisture either. But such compositions allow air to pass through, which does not prevent the walls from "breathing". This varnish is quite suitable for decorating rooms where there is no high humidityand the walls do not need frequent cleaning.

In a two-component composition, the elasticity of acrylic is combined with the strength of polyurethane. In this case, the technical parameters are much better.

Storage of water-based varnish is possible at positive temperatures. Otherwise, it freezes, disintegrates into separate layers, and after that it can no longer be used.

Polyester

It is produced using polyester resins, after curing it forms a durable coating that protects against moisture and other harmful influences. They successfully cover floors, furniture and musical instruments.

Also, the varnish is difficult to apply. For these purposes, a special pistol is used, when working with which high accuracy is important.

Epoxy

This varnish is based on epoxy resin. Thanks to the special hardener contained in the composition, the coating is very durable, shock-resistant and moisture-resistant. It is mainly used for flooring, but it is also suitable for outdoor use.... Complete drying time is about 12 hours.

Formulations in spray cans

These varnishes can have different compositions and are used for different purposes. There are those that contain just shine and give protection, and there are also shades. The huge advantage is that the spray is very easy to apply and doesn't require any special skills. They can easily cover a car, treat a wood surface or apply to a wall.

Colors

Colorless varnish is considered universal. With its help, you can protect the surface, giving it a shine, but at the same time without changing the color. Along with this, there are many varnishes with which you can give a wall or furniture a very interesting look and shade.

Most often, panel varnish is chosen with a matte or glossy shade, depending on preferences and the surface to be treated. This can be easily achieved with an acrylic or polyurethane coating.

But for those who are not afraid of experiments, there are many options with which you can completely transform any object or surface. For example, in order to artificially age the wall, craquelure varnish is used... It makes the surface look cracked.

Pearlescent varnish is applied at the final stage to give the surface a shimmery effect... A slightly different effect, but no less beautiful, can be achieved using glitter varnish.

In order to achieve a certain tone, you can use the coloring effect, and better to buy ready-made colored varnish, especially since the palette in the stores is extensive. For the same wooden surface, there is not only the traditional black and white color, but also a lot of a wide variety of shades.

If the decor in the room requires something unusual, you can purchase golden, silver and even luminous varnish.

Criterias of choice

To choose the right paint and varnish product, you need to decide what work is to be done, and for what premises it will be used.

Internal work

You can safely cover walls and ceilings in rooms with acrylic varnish. It will create a beautiful appearance and will serve as protection. It is especially relevant for the design of wooden ceilings. The composition will only emphasize the unique pattern of wood.

It is good to cover both shelves and other wooden furniture with this varnish. It can also be used to coat painted surfaces. The only condition is for each type of paint, you need to select the appropriate varnish... If, for example, painting was done with acrylic enamel, then after that the surface must be treated with acrylic varnish, and it will hold well. But the same product will hardly fall on alkyd paint, and there is no guarantee that it will last a long time. It is advisable to choose a more durable coating for such paint.

If, for example, work is to be done in the bathroom, then you need to select a moisture-resistant varnish, which means that a polyurethane compound is more suitable here.

Outdoor decoration

The outdoor varnish contains special components that can protect the surface from sun, frost and even rain. In addition, some formulations contain components that prevent the appearance of fungus. This varnish is suitable for covering garden furniture, gazebos, swings, benches, houses.

It is recommended to cover the bathhouse with a protective layer., because natural wood in any case needs additional protection. That's why first there must be a primer, then painting and varnishing. Only in this case, the building will last a long time.

Well-proven and yacht varnish... Among other things, it is also resistant to salt water. Such a coating on boats can serve for at least ten years.

Manufacturers

There are many manufacturers offering their products on the paint and varnish market. The choice is so great that it is sometimes difficult to navigate this variety. Based on what work will be done, you can determine the composition of the product by reading it on the packaging.
