We spend a considerable part of our time in the kitchen, especially if it combines a work area and a dining room. On an area of 20 sq. m. both will fit safely. Special attention should be paid to the design of such a room, it is in it that the "hearth" is located, which is responsible for the warmth and comfort in our house. It will be pleasant to cook and eat in a beautiful comfortable kitchen, relax after a hard day's work, chat with a good companion over a cup of tea.

Peculiarities

The design of the kitchen includes not only the arrangement of furniture and decor, it needs complete harmony of walls, ceiling and floor. Doors, windows, lighting, household appliances - everything should correspond to the chosen stylistic direction. Therefore, a good room design starts with renovation. Initially, two things are defined: style and budget. All other movements to create a kitchen design are carried out with an eye to the indicated possibilities. It is unacceptable to change direction in the course of action.

For example, you cannot remove a stretch ceiling prepared for an Art Nouveau setting, if you suddenly come up with an idea to equip a kitchen in the Provence style, an important condition for which is natural materials.

The repair should begin with the project (drawing and estimate). Area 20 sq. meters well zoned. Even at the planning stage, it is necessary to calculate where the boundaries of the proposed zones will pass. They can be distinguished by using different floor materials, contrasting colors of walls, podiums, niches, arches. Lighting is involved in zoning, so electrical wiring, like plumbing, is prepared in advance.

Finishing work

Having decided on the project of the future kitchen, you can start finishing work. Let's dwell on them in more detail.

Floor

When choosing a material for the kitchen floor, you need to take into account the specifics of this room, therefore, the requirements for the coating will be special. The floor should be moisture resistant, durable, beautiful, and easy to clean. Many people prefer tiles, stone, linoleum.

It should not be forgotten that for 20 sq. m. there is also a dining room, which you want to equip more comfortably using warm materials such as wood-based panels, parquet, laminate.

These types of coatings do not meet the stringent requirements of the kitchen, where there are leaks and various incidents during cooking. To solve this issue, designers use a fashionable technique - they equip the dining and work area with different coatings.

Consider what are flooring materials.

  • Many people opt for ceramic tiles. It meets all the requirements for flooring in a kitchen. Of course, ceramics are cold and can be slippery if you spill water on them. The situation will be helped by the "warm floor" system and the choice of a rough surface.
  • Porcelain stoneware - a serious "competitor" to ceramic tiles. It has a long-lasting color that does not change over time. The material can only be damaged during the transportation and installation stages. When the floor is already laid, the porcelain stoneware surface becomes super strong and durable. Disadvantages include weight, high cost, and care during installation.
  • Quartz vinyl floor has a high wear resistance, it is warm, non-slip, can "sit" on glue, be fixed with locks.
  • Artificial PVC linoleum - the most popular material for the kitchen, it is lightweight, does not allow water to pass through, it is easy to fit and wash, has a budgetary cost.A large selection of this material will satisfy every taste. There are options with a rough surface to avoid slipping.
  • Laminate suitable for the dining area, it imitates many types of wood and is easily matched to the style theme. With a careful attitude, it will last quite a long time, it is cheaper than wood products.
  • Parquet made from different types of wood, it is environmentally friendly and looks great. Such a coating should be treated with care, it requires periodic maintenance.
  • Self-leveling seamless floors are gaining popularity. They work well in the kitchen. The surface looks especially impressive using a three-dimensional pattern.

Walls

Starting to work with walls, you need to already have an idea of the future furniture. If it is chosen in the style of minimalism, you cannot use floristic elements in the plots of the walls; monochrome or monochromatic coating will do. A small floral print or simple plastering is chosen for the Provence style. Pop art interior accepts variegated surroundings. If you want a bright finish in a mixed-style kitchen, it's best to give a riot of colors one accent surface. If the color of the finish matches the tone of the furniture, the room will dissolve into space. A contrasting combination of furniture and walls looks more impressive.

It should be remembered that too dark or bright color of the walls allows you to get clear boundaries.

This can be used by zoning the room. The light color of the surfaces makes the room look three-dimensional. Completely dark walls create the effect of a "box", enclosed space.

Consider what are the finishing materials for vertical surfaces.

  • Wallpaper. The directionality of the stripes on the wallpaper can visually expand the walls or move the ceiling. Stereoscopic wallpaper with a 3D pattern or photo wallpaper with a perspective look spectacular (a field with a leaving road, steps going up), such a pattern pushes the wall.
  • Decorative plaster. It looks good in the dining area, you can choose material of any color and texture. This type of plastering well hides all surface irregularities.
  • Panels. Plates made of wood, plastic, laminate or ceramic tiles are suitable for panels. An interior with panels is convenient in an apartment with small children; their size should exceed the child's ability to stain the wallpaper.
  • In the kitchen, you can lay out ceramic tiles on the walls up to the ceiling, but for 20 sq. m. there will be too much of it, so it is better to leave such material for the working area.
  • Brickwork looks beautiful, for example, lovers of the loft style literally lay out the entire kitchen with bricks. However, one or two stone walls are enough for a harmonious interior.

Ceiling

The ceiling, no less than the walls, creates a complete image of the entire interior. The kitchen combined with the dining room is entitled to all kinds of ceiling coverings.

  • The easiest option is whitewashing. It can be used in industrial areas, in all rustic styles or in antique interiors.
  • Painting will suit literally all styles, you just need to choose the right color scheme.
  • Drywall is often used in the work on the ceiling. Even the most noticeable slab differences are hidden under it. With the help of drywall, curly or multi-level structures are built. This option is suitable for high ceilings, since each tier takes up to 10 cm of space.
  • Stretch ceilings have become familiar. The glossy option doubles the room, and the reflectivity of a dark color is much stronger than white. It is undesirable to install the tension surface above the plate. There are cases when accidental ignition of oil in a frying pan completely destroyed the synthetic surface.
  • Wooden ceilings or decorated with large beams look beautiful.

Layout

The kitchen of 20 squares is large enough to combine not only a working and dining area, but also a living room, if there is a need for it.

The layout of a kitchen of this size can be very different: square, rectangular, elongated, with a window at the end, with two windows and several doors, or with complex geometry with ledges and niches. In each case, kitchen sets are arranged in different ways, they are angular with two equal rows, angular L-shaped, U-shaped.

From rectilinear headsets, single-row and double-row ones are distinguished.

The dining area will depend on the location of the window, door, shape of the kitchen itself. For a twenty-meter room, the optimal size is 4 by 5 meters. Such a room is well divided in half, into two equal zones: a work and a dining area. In a square room, the kitchen set is placed against the walls, and the dining table is in the center, sometimes this place is occupied by an island element. You can zone a room with furniture, arches, ledges, podiums.

To this list you can add lighting and a variety of colors and finishes.

Style selection

No tips are needed to choose a style, each is determined according to taste. Sometimes you have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and it must correspond to the character, be pleasant and understandable. Let's try to outline the main directions, and everyone will make the choice himself.

  • Classic. The classic style suits large rooms, but the kitchen is 20 sq. m. can also be furnished with similar furniture. Classicism prefers symmetry, regular shapes, natural materials, wood.
    • Provence. Cozy style of the French countryside. The kitchen contains only natural materials; wood, rattan, and vine are chosen for furniture. Cotton and linen are used as textiles. The decor welcomes figurines, pillows, tablecloths with ruffles, pots with fresh flowers. The furnishings are predominantly pastel colors, the interior items are artificially aged.
    • High tech. This direction is the opposite of Provence. There is straightforward simple furniture that resembles a drawing, an abundance of gloss and technology.
    • Pop Art. This style is perfect for young owners who are not afraid to combine a variety of shades.
