Gooseberry lovers will certainly want to plant and grow a berry crop on their garden plot that gives a stable and good harvest. One of these is the Krasnoslavyansky gooseberry with memorable taste.

Breeding history

The gooseberry Krasnoslavyansky is the result of the work of domestic breeders of the Leningrad fruit and vegetable experimental station - (O. A. Medvedeva and I. S. Studenskaya). A fruit shrub was bred more than 30 years ago by crossing two species - Oregon and Avenarius. Since 1992, the variety has been listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation, and is also allowed for use. It is recommended to grow a crop in different climatic regions - Central, Volgo-Vyatka, North-West.

Description of the variety

Varietal gooseberry is a medium-sized shrub that grows up to 100-150 cm. The bushes are characterized by a slightly spreading and compact crown, upright shoots, brown at the base and light green on top, heavily covered with sharp thorns, as well as small buds growing slightly deflected from the shoots. In addition, the shrubs are endowed with a moderate thickening of emerald green foliage with a matte surface. During the flowering period, the bushes are covered with yellowish flowers resembling bells. Each flower brush consists of several colors.

The increased self-fertility of the variety (up to 49%) allows it to be planted without auxiliary pollinating bushes on the site.

Characteristics of berries

Gooseberries are quite large. The average weight is 3.9-6 g. The shape of the berries is correct - rounded or rounded-oval with a smooth surface and light edging. Ripe gooseberries are endowed with a beautiful color - dark cherry, uniform, with barely noticeable veins. The peel of the berries is thin but firm with a slight velvety texture.

Berries have a universal purpose - they are eaten fresh, added to baked goods, processed into preserves, jams and marmalades, and also frozen. Gooseberries are easy to transport, and can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4-6 days. If you remove the berries at the stage of technical ripeness, then their keeping quality will double. It is recommended to transport the harvested crop in a wooden or plastic container.

Taste qualities

Taste and commercial properties of the variety are excellent. The pulp of the berries is fleshy, soft, low-grained and juicy. The taste of gooseberry is dominated by dessert sweetness, harmoniously combined with an imperceptible sourness. The aroma of the berries is weak, but pleasant. The pulp contains up to 11% sugars and 2% acid.

Ripening and fruiting

The Krasnoslavyansky gooseberry is characterized by an average ripening period.2 years after planting, the shrub begins to bear fruit. The highest yields can be counted on in the 6-7th year of plant growth.

You can taste delicious berries on the 20th of July. The peak of fruiting occurs in late July - early August. Overripe berries can crumble, so it is better to remove them at the stage of technical maturity. The berries are spiced together.

Yield

Yield indicators are average. Fulfilling all agrotechnical recommendations, 6 kg of gooseberries can be removed from 1 bush per season. On an industrial scale, the yield is also pleasing - 150-160 centners per hectare.

Landing

Autumn is considered a favorable season for planting Krasnoslavyansky gooseberries - from September 15 to October 5. At this time, the rhizome quickly adapts. Fertilizers are applied 30-50 days before planting.

It is better to buy seedlings at the age of 1-2 years. In this case, the type of root system does not matter (open / closed). An ideal seedling is 2-3 shoots with a height of about 40-50 cm and a developed root (length more than 13-16 cm). When planting seedlings, be sure to keep a distance. There should be a distance of up to one and a half meters between the bushes, and 250-300 cm from the trees. Experienced farmers advise planting seedlings near hedges, which can protect the bushes from unwanted drafts and gusty winds.

Planting shrubs in different seasons has its own pros and cons. In order for a gooseberry to start, you need to know some aspects of planting it. First of all, you need to choose the right planting material, then decide on the landing site and competently prepare the planting pit.

Growing and care

Any soil is suitable for growing berries, the main thing is that they are low acid, with a rich nutritional composition and with good moisture capacity and aeration. The site is suitable well-lit by the sun, or located in partial shade. Lowlands for gooseberry seedlings are not suitable, since the rhizome does not react well to stagnant moisture in the soil, formed from the groundwater passing near.

It is not recommended to plant gooseberry bushes between stone fruit and fruit crops, as well as in an area where currants or raspberries previously grew, as this can negatively affect the quality and quantity of berries - they will begin to shrink.

The plant can be propagated by different methods - lignified and green cuttings, layering and dividing the bush. Regardless of the type of reproduction, the varietal properties of the berry are preserved.

Caring for gooseberries is not particularly difficult, since it consists of standard measures: high-quality feeding 36 months after planting, regular watering, especially during the pouring of berries, crown formation, sanitary and rejuvenating pruning of branches, mulching the soil, installing a support that simplifies care and collection harvest, as well as protection against insects and diseases.

In order to rejuvenate the gooseberry bush, give it a neat look, optimize yield and protect it from pests, it must be periodically pruned. There are several types of pruning: anti-aging, sanitary and shaping. Each of them differs in seasonality and frequency.
For feeding gooseberries, both mineral and complex mixtures are well suited. Pure organic, including homemade, can also be recommended.
Although gooseberries are considered to be an unpretentious crop, they also require regular maintenance. Compliance with agrotechnical practices in the autumn-winter period guarantees the duration of fruiting and high yields for the next year, therefore, preparing the gooseberry for winter is an important event.

Disease and pest resistance

The plant has average immunity. Gooseberries are virtually immune to American powdery mildew and most fungal diseases.Poor-quality agricultural technology can provoke the appearance of pests. Most often, gooseberries attack aphids, moths and moths.

In order for the gooseberry to produce a good harvest, it is necessary to devote time to disease prevention.

Resistance to adverse climatic conditions

The berry culture is highly resistant to stress. Gooseberries easily survive short-term drought, prolonged heat and temperature changes. In addition, the variety is frost-resistant - shrubs are not afraid of temperature drops to -37 degrees.

Drafts and prolonged humidity (stagnation of moisture in the soil) negatively affect the development of the plant.

One of the positive qualities of a gooseberry is its ease of reproduction. There are a number of methods for creating new bushes from old ones. Planting material is obtained by cuttings, layering and dividing the bush.

Review overview

The Krasnoslavyansky variety has long taken an honorable place in the list of favorite fruit bushes. It is grown by both summer residents and farmers for commercial purposes. This is due to the fact that the berry culture gives stable and abundant yields, does not require special growing conditions, and quickly gets used to climatic conditions. In addition, the berries are tasty, juicy, have high commercial qualities and a universal purpose.

Of the shortcomings of the culture, only insufficient immunity to diseases can be noted, as well as the need for regular sanitary pruning and thinning of bushes, since they are fast-growing.
