If you want to grow an exotic kind of gooseberry in the country, you should pay attention to yellow-fruited varieties with incredible taste. These include English yellow gooseberries.

Breeding history

English Yellow is a cultivar with a long history dating back to the days of the Soviet Union. Then this variety was almost the most popular in the country, it was grown everywhere. Love for him does not fade away even today, although he does not appear in the State Register. Experts recommend the crop for cultivation in central Russia. The gooseberry is most productive in the south, in the Central region, and in the northern part, the yield is noticeably reduced.

Description of the variety

The varietal yellow-fruited gooseberry is a vigorous and compact shrub that grows up to 150 cm in favorable climatic conditions. The plant is characterized by slightly spreading branches, erect dark gray shoots, a developed root system, moderate thickening and dark green leaves, which change color to brown by autumn -purple. The thorniness of the bush is weak - single and soft spines are evenly distributed along the entire length of the shoots. During the flowering period, the shrub is densely covered with medium-sized yellowish-white flowers. Gooseberries bloom in the last decade of May - for 5-7 days.

Self-fertility in the variety is good, therefore, the culture does not need additional donor shrubs. Honey culture is very attractive to bees.

Characteristics of berries

English yellow is a large-fruited species. With proper care, berries grow on the bushes weighing from 4 to 5 grams. The shape of the fruit is correct - oval with a smooth surface, where a weak edge and a pronounced shine are noticeable. Ripe gooseberries have an unusual exotic color - bright yellow, sometimes rich amber with clear venation. The skin of the fruit is of moderate density, closer to thin, but firm and without toughness. Thanks to the elasticity of the peel, the berries do not crack.

The variety has a universal purpose - it is eaten fresh, processed into juices, and also a great amber dessert wine is made from it. If the berries are frozen, they will lose all their taste. The fruits are transferred without loss of marketability and taste. Gooseberry storage is quite long, the main thing is to observe the storage temperature.

Taste qualities

The gooseberry has a pronounced taste - rich sweetness with a dessert aftertaste, complemented by abundant juiciness. Light flesh is characterized by fleshiness, tenderness and moderate density. The value of the berries is stored in the content of a high amount of ascorbic acid in the pulp - 12 mg per 100 grams of gooseberries.

Ripening and fruiting

The variety is characterized by medium ripening times. The first harvest can be expected 3-4 years after planting. The berries are ripened together and evenly, and the harvest takes place in several stages. Fruiting in the gooseberry bush is stable - annual. The tasting period starts from the 2nd decade of July, and the peak of fruiting occurs in early August, the first 10 days.

Yield

The yield indicators for this species are high. With intensive agricultural technology, the average yield from one bush per season is from 8.5 to 12 kg of juicy and healthy berries. In the northern part of the country, the yield is slightly lower - up to 4 kg from 1 bush.

Landing

Shrubs are planted in the autumn and spring. For planting, it is better to buy one / two-year-old seedlings with a developed rhizome and several shoots 30-40 cm long. When planting, the distance between the bushes must be respected - 150-200 cm.

Planting shrubs in different seasons has its own pros and cons. In order for a gooseberry to start, you need to know some aspects of planting it. First of all, you need to choose the right planting material, then decide on the landing site and competently prepare the planting pit.

Growing and care

The gooseberry area should be weed-free, well-lit by the sun and protected from gusty winds. The occurrence of groundwater is deep, otherwise the roots of the plant may die. It is not recommended to plant shrubs in an area where raspberries or currants previously grew.

The plant should be propagated by layering, cuttings or dividing the bush. Methods of grafting and dividing the bush are considered effective.

The culture loves the soil loose, fertile, with neutral acidity and moderate moisture - loam or black soil.

Shrub agricultural technology consists of watering, fertilizing, sanitary pruning, bush formation, loosening and mulching, as well as disease prevention. In cold winters, shrubs are wrapped in burlap.

In order to rejuvenate the gooseberry bush, give it a neat look, optimize yield and protect it from pests, it must be periodically pruned. There are several types of pruning: anti-aging, sanitary and shaping. Each of them differs in seasonality and frequency.
For feeding gooseberries, both mineral and complex mixtures are well suited. Pure organic, including homemade, can also be recommended.
Although gooseberries are considered to be an unpretentious crop, they also require regular maintenance. Compliance with agrotechnical practices in the autumn-winter period guarantees the duration of fruiting and high yields for the next year, therefore, preparing the gooseberry for winter is an important event.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety has good immunity, but the gooseberry can suffer from the spheroteca. Of the pests, aphids, spider mites and moths are considered the most dangerous.

In order for the gooseberry to produce a good harvest, it is necessary to devote time to disease prevention.

Resistance to adverse climatic conditions

The shrub easily tolerates severe frosts (-25 ... 35 degrees), prolonged drought, as well as sultry summers. Long-term shade, excess moisture and drafts are negative factors for the culture.

One of the positive qualities of a gooseberry is its ease of reproduction. There are a number of methods for creating new bushes from old ones. Planting material is obtained by cuttings, layering and dividing the bush.
