Gooseberry White Nights

Gooseberry varieties are quite numerous, but that is why it is necessary to pay attention first of all to the features of specific species. We'll have to take into account the nuances of growing them. However, the basic botanical moments can be no less significant.

Created White Nights at the Leningrad Fruit and Vegetable Experimental Station. The breeders Studenskaya and Alekseeva were working on the project. Biological material from the gooseberries Hansa and Mysovsky 17 was used for crossing. The plant was officially registered in 2000, and since then it has been actively used.

The bushes at the White Nights are medium-sized. They are compact, they show spreading only when the crop is heavily loaded. The thorns, alas, are present. Moreover, the number of these thorns is very large.

Shoots are of medium thickness and grow straight. Their tops hang down. The shoots are characterized by a light green color. In some cases, the tops are anthocyanin-colored. Pubescence is atypical.

Leaves of medium size are colored green. They are characterized by an intense shine and a wide-rounded geometric shape. The flowers are medium in size, rather pale in color.

Gooseberry fruits White nights are small and medium in size. Their mass ranges from 1.5 to 4.3 g. For berries, a round-oval or simple round shape is typical. The surface is painted in a greenish yellow tone. A dotted blush appears on the sunny side.

The flesh of such a gooseberry is very juicy. Sweet dessert taste is typical for her. The share of sugars ranges from 10.8 to 11.3%. The titratable acidity level will be from 1.7 to 2%. The tasting examination gave an assessment of 4.6 points.

White Nights is a typical early ripe gooseberry. The ripeness of the harvest can be reached by the 20th of July. Much depends on the correctness of the agricultural technology used. Fruiting occurs regularly.

The ability to pick from 4.4 to 6.2 kg of berries from 1 bush is declared. At the same time, it is possible to achieve a good result only with proper agricultural technology. However, weather conditions also play a very significant role.

It is believed that the best conditions for this plant are created in the northwest of the European part of Russia. But that is precisely why we can say that in the middle lane it should also feel good. Planting is best done in the autumn months. Neutral or slightly acidic ground is preferred. On heavy soils, instead of the usual 50 cm hole, you need to dig a hole 60 or even 70 cm deep.

To saturate the planting pits, use:

• humus;
• wood ash;
• a small amount of mineral fertilizers;
• sand (needed to improve heavy soils).

The self-fertility rate reaches 55%. This means that there is little need for additional pollinating shrubs. However, their use brings certain benefits.

Weed and water the plantings regularly. Watering is stopped 14 days before harvesting so that the berries are not too watery.

Be sure to practice:

• sanitary;
• anti-aging pruning.

The variety staunchly resists the defeat of American powdery mildew. Anthracnose also poses almost no danger to him. But all the same, preventive treatments against these ailments during periods of mass destruction are required. It is also worth considering the likelihood of being hit by the same insects that often attack gooseberries. Protection measures against them are traditional.

Winter hardiness of this variety is relatively high. But it is not very wise to abuse this property of the plant. Drought resistance is not described in the official description.
