When sealing seams, cracks, joints, when gluing parts, they used to use homemade mastics, bituminous mixtures or putty, which did not differ in high efficiency and quickly collapsed. Innovative technologies have replaced the old ineffective methods.

The modern market offers a huge assortment of silicone protection from various companies, but the most popular among them is the Moment silicone sealant.

The use of this tool simplifies the work of sealing seams, cracks and much more effectively protects against moisture and destruction.

Peculiarities

Moment is a product created by the German company Henkel, which has over 130 years of successful experience in the industrial and household chemicals market. The latest equipment, technologies, constant modernization of formulations, focus on environmental protection and strict quality control help them to be the first.

Basically, the brand produces adhesives, polyurethane foams and sealants. Most of their products belong to the "Moment" line. Moisture control products are formulated with many components to help you get the most out of your tasks.

General characteristics:

  • The main component is rubber, which provides the viscosity of the mass, thanks to which the sealant can be applied to any deformable surface.
  • The composition includes all kinds of amplifiers that provide varying degrees of strength, as well as vulcanizers that are responsible for consistency and plasticity.
  • For more reliable adhesion to surfaces, adhesion primers are added.
  • Various fillers add volume and color to the composition.
  • For additional ductility and elasticity, silicone plasticizers are added.
  • Antifungal additives protect surfaces from mold growth.

The purpose of the sealant is protection from moisture and drafts, tight adhesion of parts, to prevent leakage of water or other substances.

Certain factors help Moment sealant in this task:

  • Combination with all surfaces, strong adhesion to all materials.
  • The sealant tolerates very low temperatures (up to -40 degrees) and high temperatures (up to +100 degrees).
  • The service life of the supplied seal is about 10 years.
  • High plasticity, which allows the substance to have the dynamics of deformable materials.
  • It does not collapse from sudden temperature changes.
  • UV resistance, that is, the substance is not afraid of direct sunlight.

Moment, like a protective coating, has some minor drawbacks:

  • The sealant cannot be painted over.
  • Pungent odor in some products.
  • At low or high temperatures, the cooling time of the upper layers can be up to 5 hours.

Despite the combination with a large number of materials and surfaces, the sealant is not recommended for the treatment of metals prone to corrosion, natural stones, plastered surfaces, concrete and cement.

Types and characteristics

Silicone insulating agents, used in all areas of construction, are divided into two types.

  • One-component - the most common on the shelves in stores. They are used for everyday routine tasks. They are offered for sale in special tubes with dispensing nozzles.Curing occurs due to the moisture present in the air, therefore, the complete set includes clips for the cap, thanks to which the substance inside the tube does not freeze. The only drawback of a one-component sealant is that solidification occurs only with thinly applied layers - from 2 mm to 15 mm.
  • Two-component insulators are used only for industrial purposes, their cost is much higher, as well as indicators of technical capabilities.

Silicone sealants are not painted, but they carry the basic color scheme.

The substance itself is divided into two types.

  • Colorless - widely used for bathtubs, sinks, joints, plumbing and kitchen furniture. Differs in high moisture and heat resistance, eliminates the possibility of leaks.
  • Color - the palette contains red, beige, black, white, yellow and brown shades of insulating silicone. Matches to colored furniture and structures.

Colored silicone is less common and popular, with preference given mainly to a transparent substance.

Henkel, creating Moment products, divided them into narrower profile areas:

Bituminous

This composition is used for insulating roof tiles, filling cracks in the base of the foundation, in the basement. Used on metal, plastic, wood surfaces, has high moisture resistance, adhesion to the listed surfaces, heat resistance.

Universal

It has a colorless base and is used to prevent drafts. The sealant is intended for external work, often used for thermal insulation of window frames.

Aquarium

The insulator differs from other types of Henkel products in its environmental friendliness of composition, it does not contain toxic chemical additives, which makes it harmless to humans and animals. Suitable for showers, well suited for aquariums.

Differs in high speed of drying and moisture resistance.

Sanitary

The peculiarity of sanitary silicone for sealing is the content of antifungal and antibacterial additives. It is versatile and widely used in high humidity environments.

Heat resistant

High Temperature Herment is a premium branch of the conventional Moment sealant. It belongs to insulators with a rich variety of components. It is especially heat-resistant, it can be used at extremely high temperatures up to +300 degrees and in cold conditions - up to -50.

A heat-resistant insulator is used more often for industrial purposes, for processing electrical wires, shields, ovens, chimneys, motors.

Sealants are sold in tubes of 280, 310 and 600 ml, and small tubes of 85 g for fine grouting are also displayed.

There are also two types of silicone insulators.

  1. Neutral - alcohol is added to the mixture, ketoxime can also be used instead of vinegar (the smell of the composition is weaker). It is used in external and internal works, it is white and transparent
  2. Acid - there is vinegar in the composition, it has a pungent characteristic smell. Marked with the letter "A", in some cases it can cause corrosion on the surfaces of non-ferrous metals, marble and cements, which contain alkali. The cost of acid insulation is less. Sold in white and transparent.

Application area

The scope of application of the Moment sealant is diverse, it can be used to treat various surfaces, it provides resistance against moisture and drafts, it is used for the following purposes:

  • insulation of window frames;
  • ensuring the moisture resistance of bathrooms, washbasins, toilets, pipes;
  • complete sealing of greenhouses and swimming pools;
  • repair of barrels and watering cans or other equipment;
  • provision of sealing, car headlights, glass;
  • use of a sealant as a sealant;
  • mirror processing;
  • electric installation work;
  • sealing joints in chimneys, motors.

Usage Tips

Before you start using Moment silicone sealant, you should read the instructions, since different types of insulators have their own characteristics. It is recommended to wear gloves to protect the skin from the substance.

Accuracy and consumption depends on correct use, which assumes a standard procedure and some nuances:

  • The surface to be applied must be cleaned of dirt and dust.
  • When sewing seams, it is worthwhile to limit the edges with duct tape for a more accurate result.
  • Put a special assembly gun on the tube.
  • Remove the retainer. Punch a hole with the back side.
  • The end of the tube can be cut to the desired size based on the size of the seam. It is better to do this obliquely, so the substance will flow out more evenly.
  • Begin to gently apply the silicone while holding the tube at a 45-degree angle.
  • The thinner the layer of the substance, the faster the silicone will dry.
  • The sealant dries completely in 24 hours, and a hard film on the surface can appear in 20 minutes.
  • It is necessary to apply the substance close to the surface, this will provide maximum adhesion.
  • It is better to remove excess substance immediately with a spatula or rag.
  • If the sealant has dried, but there is still excess of it, you can use white spirit or special substances to remove silicone. You can also try peeling off the cured silicone, but there is a high risk of scratching the surface.
  • Pay attention to the expiration date of the sealant, if it has expired, the substance will lose its adhesion.

Be sure to pay attention to the smell. It is better to buy sealants neutral, odorless - this is a guarantee of the absence of toxic substances, or ventilate the premises.
