It is recommended to equip entrance doors in private houses and organizations with door closers. But these devices, allowing you to conveniently use the door, are quite diverse. You need to be especially careful when choosing and placing them.

Features of choosing a closer

The closer both to the inner and outer parts of the door must provide automatic closing of the sash. The simplest type of device is oil, which works by moving fluid under the pressure of a spring. When the door is opened, the spring is compressed. As soon as the handle is released, it will unclench and smoothly slam the sash.

But the simplest devices are now used very rarely. More modern designs are often rack-based. This type of force transfer ensures the smoothest possible spring movement. However, it cannot be applied to devices with sliding channels. In a cam system, energy must be transmitted by a special cam made of a steel profile similar in shape to a heart.

By changing the profile, a certain compression intensity is achieved. This ensures a comfortable closing of the sash. When choosing a door closer for a street door, you should think primarily about the moment of inertia. This indicator, directly related to the weight and width of the door body, is reflected in the EN 1154 standard. Products classified as EN1 are capable of serving only an interior door, and the lightest one.

If it is necessary to install the door closer on a steel entrance structure, then it must comply with the EN7 class. Important: along with closers of a strictly defined level, there are also adjustable elements. Their marking starts with the lowest closing force, and the highest level is indicated with a hyphen. Full information on this can be obtained in the tables given in the technical documentation.

It is also very important how the torque is transmitted. If a lever is used for this purpose, then it is made from a pair of connected axles. When the sash is opened, these axes bend at a certain point. By itself, such a device is quite durable and can last for a long time. But the fully open mechanism is very easily damaged by hooligans.

Sliding channel systems are characterized in that the free edge of the lever moves along a groove. Getting to the lever itself is problematic, which complicates the actions of vandals. But you have to put in more effort to open the doors. The use of a cam transmission device helps to somewhat compensate for the difficulties in movement. It is he who allows the most efficient transmission of kinetic energy.

Floor structures, as their name clearly indicates, are placed in the floor. It is almost impossible for those wishing to break something to get to such elements. If the sash opens in two directions, it will be placed on the closer spindle. If only one - the device is located near the canvas. It is these types of door closers that are widely used on the doors of shops and similar institutions.

The frame device in its action differs little from the floor one. However, the attachment point is already different.As for the installation options, then there is an invoice scheme and three hidden versions. The closer can be hidden:

  • in the floor;
  • in the frame;
  • in the door leaf.

On a plastic door, as on a wooden one, it is usually required to choose relatively weak closers. But if the structure is large, and the sash is therefore heavy, you will have to install a more powerful device. Important: when the opening force is insufficient, it is recommended to mount two devices. The main thing is that their action is completely synchronized. The speed with which the device closes the door is not standardized by standards and there are not even strict numbers yet.

It is necessary to observe how quickly the canvas closes completely. On a fire door, closing should take place as quickly as possible so that the intake of smoke and the spread of fire is difficult. And the lowest possible speed is required where there is:

  • Small children;
  • aged people;
  • those who are poorly oriented in the surrounding reality (disabled and seriously ill);
  • pets.

The slamming rate characterizes how quickly the web will cover the last section of its path when closing. This parameter is only taken into account when a snap-type lock is installed. But since it is not always known where it will be installed, it is better to familiarize yourself with this indicator when buying a closer. In public places, unlike in a private house, the delayed opening function is significant. Sooner or later, individual visitors will try to open the door too hard - and then braking with a closer will prevent the canvas from hitting the wall.

Stopping the sash in the open position is important mainly in medical and other similar organizations. When carrying a stretcher, there is no need to somehow support the canvas additionally. Sometimes this function is also interested in warehouses. There, too, it becomes necessary to bring in or take out heavy and uncomfortable loads without unnecessary problems. An alternative solution is often a delayed closing door.

If the closer is placed on the front door, then in most regions of Russia it must be thermally stable (that is, designed for temperatures from -35 to 70 degrees). Only in the coldest places it makes sense to buy frost-resistant structures that can work at -45 degrees. Inside the premises, ordinary closers are installed, which will not be able to operate at temperatures below -10 and above + 40. The temperature range is determined by the type of oil inside the mechanism.

In addition to thermal characteristics, it is necessary to take into account the direction in which the door will open. The closer can move it to the left, right or in both directions. It is recommended to choose universal designs most often, especially since they can be reconfigured if suddenly the course of opening the canvas changes. Differences can also be related to the assembly type of the device. Fully sealed devices are relatively inexpensive - but if oil leaks out of them or another defect occurs, it makes no sense to remember the repair.

It is recommended to always find out what the resource of a particular block is. Reputable manufacturers supply door closers that can survive millions of door closings. But, of course, such technical perfection is fully paid by the consumer. Another point, which is partly related to the previous one, is warranty obligations. Those firms that give a guarantee for less than 12 months do not make any sense to buy closers.

Other parameters are closely related to the type of installed door. So, if it is interior and is made entirely of PVC, there are enough closers designed for the EN1 effort. Fully glazed structures are already equipped with products according to EN2. And if you choose a canvas made of solid wood, you need a 4th or 5th grade. For your information: it is not recommended to install excessively powerful devices - this will lead to accelerated wear of the hinges and significantly complicate life.

Floor closers are mainly used on an aluminum arched door. In this case, the response circuits are mounted in the threshold. Closers for the wardrobe door are usually special top rollers. They replace standard roller assemblies. For your information: there is no need to change the lower rollers.

Stages of installing the structure on the door

We develop a scheme

Most often, it becomes necessary to install door closers on external doors. Usually, the scheme is thought out in such a way that the body is in the room. But for models with increased resistance to cold, this is not important. In the diagram, it should be noted what diameter of the fastener is required. This will allow you to more accurately select the closer itself and the drills for its installation. If necessary, you should consult with professionals. When the door opens towards the closer, the body is placed on the canvas. But the lever complex is located on the frame. A different approach is required if the door is to be opened outward from the leading node. Then the blocks are swapped. The sliding channel will have to be installed on the door body, and the main part of the device on the jamb.

Choosing installation options

When installing an overhead door closer, perform the following actions:

  • determination of the mounting position;
  • choice of outdoor (option - indoor) location;
  • determining the directions where the device should open the door;
  • attaching the wiring diagram accompanying each officially supplied product to the canvas and jamb.

In the last step, mark where the holes will be made. You can make neat notes even through a piece of paper. The necessary holes for the fasteners are drilled with a drill. The template always contains a complete set of installation methods. It shows whether the door closer will be placed on the right or left door, whether it will swing inward or outward.

In addition, according to the template, they will find out on which categories of doors a door closer can be installed. They also show in what cases it is possible to change the attachment points. Highlighting each option with color or dotted lines will help you avoid confusion. Important: if the door is made of aluminum or thin steel, you will have to install special fasteners - the so-called bonds. They help to avoid damage to the material where they are attached.

When the marks with the help of the diagram and the template are completed, the closer body and the lever or the bar are fixed on the canvas (box) with self-tapping screws. The second segment of the lever is fixed on the body. After that, you can already connect the lever, forming a kind of "knee". But such a solution does not always allow the task to be completed. Alternative approaches are needed when working with a wicket or an unusual-looking door.

In this situation, sometimes schemes are chosen with parallel installation on a plate or with mounting angles. The role of the corners is to help if you cannot fix the lever on the surface of the box. In some cases, the door closer bodies are placed on a corner element located above the upper slope. In this case, the levers are pressed against the canvas. Alternatively, a plate is placed on the door, leading it beyond the upper edge.

Then the body is already fixed on this plate. The lever in this version is usually placed on the door frame. To maximize the slope area, the body is attached to the canvas in the usual way. Next, the lever is attached to the mounting plate. There is another way: with it, the plate is placed on the box, the body is mounted, and the lever element is fixed on the canvas.

How to install: step by step guide

But simply choosing one or another approach to installing a door closer is not enough. It is imperative to follow a strict sequence of work. To do everything right with your own hands, the template is attached to the canvas using thin tape. Then they take a center punch and mark the midpoints of the holes. Now you can put the case using the standard fasteners. The accuracy of the installation is determined by looking at the location of the adjusting screws.Next comes the turn to fix the lever system. Standard rules stipulate that you need to fix it on the side opposite to the door. In some cases, the connector system is supplied pre-assembled. Then, for the duration of the work, the hinge is pulled out - it is only necessary then to put it in its proper place.

Now you need to fix the segment that cannot be adjusted - the knee. To hang it in the air at the exactly designated place, use the axis of the closer. Fixation is done with a nut tightened with a wrench. Important: when the closer is mounted to eliminate noise, the knee, according to the instructions, is fixed in only one way - at an angle of 90 degrees to the door. In this case, the lever is placed at the same angle to the canvas, and the parts need to be connected only after the door is completely closed.

They act differently when in the first place - the reinforced clamping of the canvas. In this case, the canvas itself is supplied with a seal or a latch, and the rigid lever is mounted at an angle of 90 degrees to the door. The knee is made adjustable, but it is imperative that its length allows the mechanism to work normally. This approach will help increase the speed of the final swap. Finish the installation by connecting the two segments with a hinge.

Operating tips

Even if the closers are installed according to all the rules, sometimes you have to interfere with their work. But in order for such a need to arise less often, you need to follow elementary rules. The apparatus should close the door by itself - this is its main vocation. If the closing speed is too high or too low, there is no need to help or interfere with the web. In such cases, the mechanism is adjusted.

Do not abuse the door's ability to stay open. Moreover, you cannot put various unnecessary objects under the canvas. And also you should not hang on the door, use it for rolling. Children love this kind of entertainment - and they need to be carefully monitored. Noticing that the device is working somehow incorrectly, you need to see if oil drips have appeared.

At the same time, the adjustment of the internal part of the mechanism should still be entrusted to professionals. There is a powerful spring, which must be handled with care. But it is quite possible to adjust the speed of work - for this you need to tighten or loosen the special screws. Caution: they cannot be completely removed, this can cause depressurization of the closer. Before performing this work, you need to check the technical documentation again, then the risk will be minimal.

Repair and replacement

A slight violation of the tightness of the door closers is eliminated through the use of sealants. But when the channel through which the oil leaves is very large, this technique will not help. Moreover, it is useless if the working fluid has leaked out by 100%. Then it only remains to replace the door closer completely. If the reservoir is poorly filled, you will have to add synthetic automotive oils or shock absorber fluids (they are poured through special valves).

You can repair the bar with your own hands:

  • clean out traces of corrosion and process with insulating mixtures;
  • weld fractures and minor cracks (then grind the seams);
  • Carefully align bent or bent areas, making sure that the lever remains intact.
