Many people are engaged in self-repair of furniture, various equipment, household appliances. In this case, quite often you can encounter an unpleasant problem - damage to the bolt head, which makes it impossible to remove it from the base. Nevertheless, there are many ways to do this very carefully without deforming the part being repaired, and all these solutions really work even if the bolt is recessed into the thickness of the material.

Tools and materials

Grinding off the edges of a screw, bolt or screw is a frequent occurrence, and then it is extremely difficult to unscrew them. This is called licking, its result is the twisting of a screwdriver, the impossibility of removing and replacing. A similar situation occurs due to the fact that an initially poor-quality fastening element was purchased. Another reason is the incorrect use of the tightening tools.

Sometimes you can solve the problem that has arisen with a key or with the same screwdriver, if you act carefully and do not rush.

When it doesn’t work, don’t get upset - there are other tools and accessories at hand that will help you extract the part.

For each specific case, a certain unscrewing device is suitable.

  • If there is a protruding head, you can pull out the fasteners with a gas wrench. You can move it, loosen it and remove it with pliers or a wrench by hitting it with a hammer or an impact screwdriver.
  • For stuck screws, a chisel is used, but you must work with it carefully so as not to cut off the part.
  • If the threads are rusted, it is recommended to try tapping the fasteners with a wrench: if the rust cracks, the bolt can be pulled out. Another method is the use of kerosene, where the mount is poured with liquid. After being corroded, it is much easier to unscrew the screw. A hammer drill can also help loosen rust.
  • If the bolt head is damaged, a hacksaw for metal can help: a slot is made for it, after which the part is rolled up with a screwdriver.
  • A screwdriver or electric drill is used when you need to break off rust. This is possible with sufficient tool power.
  • To make removal easier, you can use brake fluid to reduce friction between the fastener and the mating surfaces.
  • To remove torn elements with the presence of corrosion, solvents are used: fuel fluid, white spirit. If this does not help, use heating with a gas burner, and then sharply cool the fasteners with cold water.

There are other tools for dealing with stubborn fasteners that cannot be removed:

  • nail puller;
  • side cutters;
  • ratchet;
  • ticks;
  • thin drill (smaller than the screw diameter);
  • flat screwdriver;
  • steel wire with a sharpened and flattened end;
  • core with the subsequent use of a drill.

Also, for dismantling screws and bolts with a damaged head, such a useful tool as an extractor is suitable.

It is a special tool made of high-strength chrome vanadium steel that allows the removal of screw fasteners without damaging the main structure.

Instructions

The situation is especially difficult when the part from which the bolt broken off below the surface is to be removed is made of soft metal subject to deformation. Care must be taken not to damage the threads.Unscrewing can be done without a key, but you will need a hand-held bench core for marking, preferably a thin one that allows you to accurately position the drill.

The work algorithm will be as follows:

  1. first, with the help of the core, the center is outlined;
  2. a tap is taken - a cutting screw with a reverse thread and a diameter less than the diameter of the screw;
  3. a not too deep hole is drilled under it;
  4. the tap is inserted into the recess and cuts the thread;
  5. when turning in a full circle, it will be possible to pull out the bolt.

If it is necessary to remove the oxidized bolts from aluminum when repairing a car, especially when the nut is removed, and only oxides hold them, it remains to use heating with a gas burner. But you will need to repeatedly heat and cool the part with cold water (5-6 times).

It is good if it can be removed and immersed in water completely. However, for this you can also use chemical solutions: alkali, kerosene, vinegar essence.

At the same time, it is necessary to periodically knock out and rotate the bolt, if necessary, cut off several turns with an angle grinder.

How to unscrew different bolts?

Any broken or licked bolt can be removed or unscrewed from the hole using improvised tools and some materials, including various chemical solutions. If the broken off screw is not unscrewed, it is removed by performing monotonous actions aimed at loosening and wedging, only using different tools.

  • In parts with a Phillips screwdriver thread, a recess is drilled that will be smaller in size than the tool used. Then you need to drive a chisel into this hole and wedge it. This will turn the crease out of the base.
  • The outer bolt asterisk can first be poured with penetrating liquid VD-40, and then pulled out with pliers. If it is internal, then with the help of a grinder or a hacksaw, it is necessary to wash it down under a screwdriver with a flat blade. You can also drill the screw with a drill.
  • A not very sour hardened bolt will require drilling a slot for a screwdriver; you can also heat it up with a blowtorch to make it easier to pull it out.
  • Sheep bolts, the heads of which break off after tightening, can be removed using a gas burner or a counter-rip extractor.
  • If you need to pull out a small broken bolt with a diameter of about 1.5 mm, professionals advise to solder the knob to it for cold welding, and then unscrew it while holding it with tongs.

Sometimes it is necessary to unscrew the torn fasteners for the internal hexagon.

To do this, a vertical cut is made with a grinder across the cap, after which the bolt is unscrewed with a flat screwdriver.

The hex bolt can also be loosened using a file bore to a different size, and is easily removed with a wrench.

Various problems with damage to fasteners are resolved in specific ways.

With the edges torn off

It is easier to remove the bolt, if its edges are torn off, after applying a penetrating liquid, combustible fuel or kerosene. Then it is important to tap it or heat it up, making the metal more malleable. Only after these manipulations, you need to remove the part - with pliers or an adjustable wrench.

The screw with a torn off head protruding above the surface is pulled out with round-nose pliers, a gas wrench counterclockwise. Screws with a damaged cross and head are removed as follows:

  1. a left-hand thread is made in the remains of the body;
  2. then you need to fix them with glue;
  3. the left tap is screwed in for 60 minutes;
  4. oil is applied to the main thread.

After the glue has hardened, you can unscrew the broken hairpin.

In a hard-to-reach place

Removing faulty fasteners from equipment with many parts that do not provide enough space for work is a particular problem. This is especially difficult if the bolt breaks off flush with the surface or below.

When you need to remove broken fasteners from the car engine block, you need to drill several holes in the remaining screw body to form one large depression in which the screwdriver fits.

This makes it possible to unscrew the leftovers. You can also cut a left-hand thread in the body of a damaged screw, but this is a more difficult task.

Rusty

Torn off bolts, self-tapping screws and rusty screws are most easily removed by tapping with a hammer, loosening, heating with a soldering iron, a torch, as well as by applying combustible fuel, gasoline, penetrating liquids. An iodine solution, any solvent, special rust converters that facilitate unscrewing and extraction are also suitable for this.

Other options involve the use of a spanner wrench and a steel pipe worn on it, the use of a chisel and a hammer, but such solutions require certain skills and accuracy, otherwise you can break tools and not achieve a result.

Other

One of the most difficult types of breakage is a flush break. In this case, it is extremely difficult to establish the diameter of the hole. To remove the broken fasteners, you will have to first clean the surface, determine the gaps, and then drill the bolt. If the cliff section has a curved shape, then first use a core, and then drill a hole through which the remnants of the bolt are pulled out with a hook.

It is possible to do without the use of emergency measures in case of breakage of fastening hardware on the surface.

If the part protrudes strongly above the plane of the structure, pliers, pliers, and other simple tools should be used. Sometimes a welding machine can help in this matter. With its help, a lever is welded to the bolt, which can subsequently unscrew or unscrew the fasteners without much effort.
