Your bathroom curtain is often in water and can develop yellow stains and mildew over time. Not everyone knows how to clean such a curtain. Housewives who try to do this often fail, so they decide to purchase a new product so as not to waste time cleaning the old one. However, this is an extreme measure: often the curtain can be saved. Consider useful tips and tricks for caring for such products.

What should be considered?

When choosing a way to care for a bathroom curtain, pay attention to the material from which the curtain is created.

Among the most common options, there are several.

  • Polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride. Vinyl and polyester products are easy to clean, durable and durable. For the care of such materials, it is recommended to use bleaches, powders.
  • Fabrics with an impregnation that repels liquid. Such curtains are practical and comfortable. You can easily rinse the water off the curtain (thanks to the impregnation). After that, there will be no traces on it. It is recommended to wash such materials weekly.
  • Polyethylene curtains. They are short-lived, cheap. In the absence of the necessary care, they have to be changed monthly. Cleaning can be done with baking soda or special products. If you carefully look after such a curtain, it can last about six months (it is recommended to clean the polyethylene, and not wash it).
  • Glass products. To care for such surfaces, ordinary household glass cleaning chemicals are quite suitable. Glassware can also be cleaned with a steam cleaner.

It is better to clean the curtain, referring to the rules indicated on the label. Usually there is all the necessary information there: is it possible to use household chemicals with chlorine, at what temperature to wash, is it possible to wash the bathroom curtain at all.

How to wash?

The bath curtain can be washed in the washing machine or by hand. To select the appropriate method, consider the information on the label. Failure to comply with the rules of care can lead to a reduction in the shelf life of the product.

In the washing machine

In a typewriter, washing the curtain will turn out quickly. This method can be used to prevent the occurrence of stubborn dirt and yellow plaque. Vinyl materials should be cleaned like this on a monthly basis.

When doing laundry, you need to take into account several nuances.

  • The wash should be delicate. The maximum temperature cannot exceed 40 degrees.
  • You need to add stain remover or standard washing powder. A small amount of bleach may be used.
  • It is necessary to turn off the drying function and the spin mode. Otherwise, it is quite possible that the curtain is deformed.

You can put in the machine not only the curtain, but also clean towels that you no longer need. They will become a kind of curtain brushes. This procedure will be sufficient if you wash the product on a monthly basis. If the material has rust, yellowness, before washing, you need to soak the product in water with bleach or stain remover for several hours. If the fabric is delicate, you can use Vanish.

If there are rings on the curtain, you will need to wash it in a special bag. You can replace this item with a pillowcase that you no longer use.This will prevent damage to the washing machine. In some cases, the rings fly off, find themselves between the drum and the tank. Because of this, jamming occurs. A blockage may also occur (if the drain filter becomes clogged with foreign objects).

Manually

If the fabric is delicate, it is best to wash it by hand.

This should be done as follows:

  • mix the ammonia and hydrogen peroxide (the recommended ratio is 3: 1);
  • dip a brush or sponge in the resulting product;
  • wipe the curtain (the brush needs to be moistened with solution from time to time);
  • when the dirt disappears, rinse the material with clean water.

To remove the pungent smell of ammonia, use a special conditioner with a pleasant aroma. The curtain, on which there is heavy dirt, can be pre-soaked. To do this, mix water with baking soda or citric acid. It is not recommended to add aggressive chlorine products.

It is best to use protective gloves during the cleaning process. Otherwise, the skin of the hands may be damaged. If the material is delicate, the water temperature should not exceed 20 degrees. In other cases, the water can be heated up to 40 degrees.

Rust

It is easy to remove rust if it has appeared recently. For this reason, regular prophylaxis is necessary. It is necessary to clean the material from time to time, without waiting for the appearance of strong contamination. You can clean the yellow bottom of the curtain with special and folk remedies. Many people use a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide to remove rust.

If you prefer ready-made formulations, you can opt for Sanita or a similar product. Treat the dirty area with a cleaning agent and wait a little (a few minutes). Then remove the product using a sponge. It must first be moistened with clean water.

Limescale

This kind of contamination appears on shower curtains quite often. They occur because the curtain is regularly exposed to hard water. It is recommended that you dry the curtains thoroughly after each visit to the bathroom. Otherwise, unaesthetic stains will quickly appear on them. You can remove limescale using different methods.

Many people prefer to get rid of such contaminants with citric acid. It can help when plaque is fresh. It is also a good prevention method. When washing, add a small amount of citric acid to the detergent tray. If washing by hand, place the curtain in citric acid and wait for a while (you can leave the product like this overnight). Then brush the material where there are stains using a stiff bristled brush.

You can also cleanse such contaminants with vinegar. To do this, you need to mix table vinegar (2 large spoons) and 1 liter of water. Dip a brush or sponge into the product and remove stains. Then you need to wash the curtain in clean water. The use of special tools is possible. Ace and Vanish will do. Add some product while washing.

Do not use aggressive substances that are usually used for cleaning plumbing fixtures. Otherwise, the bathroom curtain may be damaged. Aggressive products are suitable only for removing dirt from glass products. For cleaning such surfaces, you can use, for example, "Sanox".

Mold

Mold can appear on the bathroom curtain due to high humidity in the room. Remove the fungus as soon as you notice it. It has an extremely negative impact on human health. Do not inhale spore vapors. You can use baking soda or vinegar to remove mold. They have disinfecting properties, due to which the spread of the fungus stops.

You can prepare and use the product according to the instructions.

  • First you need to prepare the surface. Treat mold stains with a stiff bristled brush.
  • Find a container that the curtain can fit in, pour warm water into it.
  • Add 100 g of baking soda or table vinegar to the container.
  • Stir the product thoroughly and place the dirty curtain in the liquid.
  • Leave the product like this for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse the curtain with clean water.

After these procedures, you need to leave the curtain for a while (so that it becomes dry). It is recommended to hang it in a room that is thoroughly ventilated. It is better to soak the product in warm water. Moldy polyethylene curtains will have to be replaced.

If you want to avoid the appearance of mold, rust, do not forget about preventive measures. After visiting the shower, the curtain must be smoothed, straightened all the folds. The bathroom should be ventilated regularly. To prevent future contamination (or at least minimize their amount), you can soak the curtain in saline after each wash.
