The subtleties of making a bathroom rug

The rug is a necessary attribute in the bathroom. You can buy it in a store, but if you want originality, you can easily do it yourself, especially since hand-made products are in vogue now. This article will discuss the intricacies of making a bathroom rug.

Peculiarities

For a rug in the bathroom and toilet, several requirements are imposed at once. There are no exceptions for a handmade item.

  • The rug should provide safety first and foremost. Wet tiles are easy to slip and injure. A mat on the floor will prevent you from falling.
  • The mat should feel good both dry and wet. By taking a bath or shower, you get a spa treatment that helps you relax, so you shouldn't feel uncomfortable when you leave the room.
  • The mat should absorb water well to keep your feet dry and not injured.
  • The rug must dry quickly so that fungus does not start underneath due to the high humidity in the bathroom.
  • The rug should be quite aesthetic and fit well into the interior of the room.

If all the requirements are taken into account in the manufacture of a rug, then you get an ergonomic and beautiful item that can become the highlight of your bathroom.

Materials (edit)

You can make a rug from both purchased materials and from what has turned up under your arm. But when choosing a material, preference should still be given to natural options.

Here are some examples of what a bathroom rug can be made from.

  • Old towels. The terry rug is quite pleasant to the touch, absorbs water well, and if you use your imagination, you can make a rather original object.
  • Wine bottle corks. Natural cork is pleasant to the touch, even if it covers the wine. Also, this material absorbs water well, dries quickly and does not rot.
  • Garbage bags. At first glance, it seems that it is impossible to create something worthwhile from this material, but this is far from the case. Craftswomen create quite original items from propylene that do not absorb water, protect against falling and provide micromassage to feet, while the cost of garbage bags is very budgetary.
  • Pom-poms. Threads of one or different colors can be used here. Such a fluffy object will resemble a grass carpet, and with the help of color, you can give the coating both a natural look and add brightness to the room.
  • Knitted patterns. You can knit a bath mat from any old thing. Here, both knitted materials (for example, T-shirts) and rather dense leftovers from old jeans are suitable.
  • Moss. Natural moss, oddly enough, is also great for creating original bathroom flooring. This plant perfectly tolerates moisture, and the created corner of nature will not only become the main accent in your room, but will also give your feet unsurpassed tenderness.
  • Pebbles. This material is also quite pleasant to the touch and will provide a foot massage. But for the manufacture of such an item, it is worth giving preference to stones with a rough surface.

How to do it yourself?

There are several ways you can make a bathroom rug: sew, knit, and even grow. It is worth choosing the one that is closer to you. Here are some master classes on how to quickly and easily make an original and functional item.

Pebble rug

For this attribute, you will need:

  • the simplest rubber mat;
  • small pebbles of different colors or monochromatic;
  • transparent glue.

Initially, we spread the drawing on the rubber mat. The stones here can be placed both in even rows and in any order. If your pebbles have different colors, then you can give free rein to imagination and lay out various ornaments, starting with ordinary chess and ending with Arabic patterns. After determining the place for each individual element, we glue the stones to the base, let it dry well, after that the product is ready for use.

Patchwork rug

If you have chiffon or crepe fabric in your home, as well as a piece of jeans and a sewing machine, then this method is for you. To make one element, you need to cut a square with a side equal to 12 cm. Their number will depend on the size of the attribute being produced. To make a petal, fold the fabric diagonally twice, then tuck the bottom corners towards the middle. All elements are sewn to a strip of fabric 10 cm wide. For a rug with parameters 50x70 cm, you will need a 9-meter strip.

Cut out the base of the rug from denim. It can be round, rectangular, oval. It all depends on the idea that you bring to life. The edges of the base must be processed with an overlock so that they do not crumble. Sew the ribbon with petals to the denim base, starting at the edge and spiraling towards the middle. In the last row, in the middle, we first sew the folded edge of the ribbon, and only then the petals themselves, so that the open part of the strip looks aesthetically pleasing.

Knitted rug

Bulky knitting is quite fashionable now, so the easiest way is to create this attribute from thick yarn. Even a beginner in knitting can handle this.

To work you will need:

  • very thick needles;
  • bulky yarn.

We knit a product of the required size with the front satin stitch. To do this, we alternate the rows, we knit them alternately with the front and back loops.

Crochet rug

This rug can be made from both threads and garbage bags. Let us dwell on the last option in more detail, since this is a rather original solution.

To make a product you will need:

  • garbage bags;
  • several colors;
  • hook number 5.

First you need to weave the yarn itself. To do this, we cut the bags into strips so that rings are formed. The thickness of each element should be about 2 cm. To connect the resulting rings to each other, you need to insert one ring into another and pull the free end of the element through the resulting loop (like a set of threads in a macrame technique).

When the yarn is ready, move on to knitting. You can knit a simple rectangular canvas, circle or even openwork.

Terry rug

Almost everyone has old towels at home, which have already lost their appearance, but it is a pity to throw them away. You can make a great rug out of them. It can be either one-color or include several colors.

To make this product, the towel should be cut into strips about 7 cm wide along the long side. We weave a braid from the ribbons obtained, while when the strip ends, we carefully sew the next one to it. As a result, you should get a rather long pigtail. We fold the resulting rope in a spiral, sew one curl to the other from the seamy side.

Living rug

A moss rug is an original solution in the interior, while making it quite simple.

To work you will need:

  • moss (you can collect it in the forest or buy it at a pet store);
  • base (any dense material is suitable here);
  • flowerpots (it is better if they are made of rubber or soft plastic, silicone baking dishes are perfect).

Vases should be glued to the base tightly enough to each other. Watch the integrity of the pots. If you damage them, soil and water will subsequently flow out of the rug during watering and stain the floor. After that, you need to plant moss in each of the pots.If the plant already has soil on its roots, then it is not necessary to additionally fill the pots with peat. If the moss is too short, then the earth should still be added. You can combine different types of moss and create patterns on your carpet. And do not forget that such an attribute requires watering, since the humidity in the bathroom is still not enough for it.

Tips & Tricks

There are a few tips to keep in mind when making any bath mat.

  • Getting down to business, remember that any work with your own hands requires a certain investment of time.
  • The interior attribute must be done carefully, otherwise it can ruin the entire design of the room.
  • Before starting work, you should have a clear idea of what will happen in the end.
  • Do not take on the kind of needlework that you do not like. The result will definitely disappoint you.
  • If you are constructing a product from old things, wash them first and cut off any spots where there are any stains, otherwise the rug will initially turn out to be dirty.
