Dill is a tug-like crop, its dry seeds are saturated with essential oils, germinate in 20-25 days without preparation. Let's see what you can do to make the dill rise quickly.

What affects germination?

The first thing that affects germination is the quality of the seeds. Dill seeds are well stored for 3-4 years, then their ability to germinate is greatly reduced, although they can persist for another 10 years. Therefore, when buying, you should choose the freshest seeds possible, preferably no older than 1 year.

There are other factors as well.

  • Temperature... If the soil temperature is maintained at + 10 ... + 12 ° C, then seedlings will appear in 2 weeks, at a temperature of + 4 ... +10 they can germinate for 3 weeks.
  • Humidity... Dill seeds contain a lot of active substances that protect them from germination. It is thanks to them that they have a spicy aroma and healing properties. However, they also affect the germination rate, preventing moisture from quickly affecting the awakening of the seed.
  • Plant variety... Early varieties germinate faster than others. The disadvantage of such varieties is that there is little greenery. They are put on an outlet. Mid- and late-ripening sprouts more tightly, but their foliage is more luxuriant.
  • Landing site. If sowing is carried out in open ground, then it is important to evaluate the site. For dill, not the best places are often chosen, it is really undemanding. However, if the culture is planted in a well-warmed area by the sun, the seeds will germinate faster. Sowing in a greenhouse or greenhouse will accelerate germination even better.
  • Soil composition. Dill doesn't like acidic soil or excess fertilizer.
  • Planting depth... Dill seeds should be covered by no more than 2 cm.

Wrong agricultural techniques can also affect: drying out of the soil during the germination period, cold soil.

How to soak seeds before planting?

In order for dill to grow quickly, there are a number of techniques that flush out the ethers from the shell, soften it and stimulate the growth center.

  • Vernalization - this is the impact on the seeds of cold and moisture. Useful for many winter or seasonal crops. Dry dill seeds are placed in a linen bag and 2 weeks before sowing (March, April, May - depending on the region) they are dropped in the garden at a depth of 10-15 cm. Melting snow literally invigorates the seeds. Then they are taken out, dried so that they can crumble again, sown.
  • Bubbling Is oxygen treatment. You can use a commercial device (it is useful for pre-planting seeds of almost all garden crops) or make a homemade one based on an aquarium compressor. The seeds are poured into a glass jar, filled with warm water (about 30-40 ° C). Lower the compressor hose to the bottom of the container, turn it on. Seed treatment lasts 1 day. During this period, it is advisable to change the water 2-3 times. It is better to pre-place the seeds in bags and carry out the described actions with the seeds of several crops at once (plus carrots, celery, parsley). After processing, the water is filtered through cheesecloth, the seeds are left on it, dried until flowable and sown on the garden bed.

In water

Dill will be useful and simple soaking. The seeds are placed in damp gauze and kept at room temperature in this state for 2-3 days until they swell. Humidity is maintained without interruption. They just add warm water 4–6 times a day and drain the excess.If it is not possible to inspect them so often, the container is loosely wrapped in a transparent cellophane bag. But they still examine, ventilate and renew the liquid at least 2 times a day. The swollen seeds are allowed to dry at normal temperature for 15 minutes and are sown immediately. Seedlings will appear in 2 weeks.

You can simply soak in water. It is recommended to keep the dill for 2 days. Sometimes gardeners claim that it is correct to soak in water for 3 days. The term depends on the variety, the seeds should swell, but not release roots, which may break off when planting. Soaking in water gives great results - dill can sprout as early as day 6... There are various improved options: to accelerate germination, they act not only with water, but also with temperature.

Dill is a seasonal crop that comes from areas with contrasting climates. The seeds of the plant are adapted to the alternation of temperatures and survival under long and varied conditions. The hot water treatment helps to break down the protective membrane, dissolve essential oils and awaken the embryo. The seeds are placed in a tissue bag, filled with very hot water, its temperature should be 55-60 ° C. Withstand no more than 2 minutes. The water is drained, sowing is performed immediately. This preparation speeds up germination by several days.

Well stimulates dill and boiling water treatment:

  • the earth is poured into the container up to 2/3 or up to half, well compacted;
  • dill seeds are scattered over the surface;
  • poured with a thin stream of boiling water;
  • quickly cover the container with a lid or glass;
  • a day later, ventilate, wipe off the condensate accumulated on the glass;
  • cover back;
  • dill shoots appear on 3-5 days, now you can add a little earth (no more than 5 mm) to them.

This method is good if you need to quickly germinate seeds in the summer and plant seedlings for fresh greenery.

In various stimulants

Sprouting in stimulants is beneficial for many crops. They affect the embryo, the protective shell, the awakening roots, nourish, protect. One of the following compounds can act as a stimulant.

  • Ash solution... In any suitable container in 1 liter of hot water, dilute 2 tbsp. l. wood ash, mix well, stand for 2 days, stirring occasionally. Then the solution is filtered. Dill is kept in it for 3 to 6 hours.
  • "Epin" or "Zircon")... For 100 ml of water, 1-2 drops of Epin are required. The temperature of the water and air in the room should be 20 ° C. The planting material is kept in this solution for 4–6 hours. The dosage of "Zircon" is slightly different - 1-2 drops are diluted in 300 ml of water, the processing time is from 8 to 16 hours.
  • Potassium permanganate... Disinfects and helps dissolve essential oils. The seeds are placed in a medium pink solution of potassium permanganate and kept for 3 hours. It is advisable to renew the liquid several times.

You don't have to strictly follow one method. You can combine different types of soaking. For example, soak in water for a day, then fill with Epin solution. If you need to make a comfortable planting mixture, you can treat the planting material with a stimulant, and then hold it in the sand. The seeds are simply mixed with wet sand, kept in a regularly ventilated plastic bag for 3-4 days, make sure that the sand is stably moist, then sown into the grooves with it.

According to folk recipes

At home, more powerful agents are used to dissolve the esters.

  • Soaking in vodka... The seeds are kept in vodka for 15 minutes, then the liquid is drained, the seeds are dried, sown. It is believed that vodka disinfects, dissolves essential oils. However, in practice, the method demonstrates not such good results as soaking in water.
  • In hydrogen peroxide 3%... Quite a strong remedy, it acts similarly to potassium permanganate. Soaking time is 6 minutes. Then the dill is washed and filled with plain water.
  • In an aqueous solution of valerian. This medicinal plant is a good substitute for biologics.The method is supposedly effective, but rarely used. The seeds are soaked for no more than 15 minutes, then they are poured with plain water and kept for another 1-2 days.
  • In milk. They take only fresh and very fat natural milk. It should be warm. Healthy dill seeds are laid out in a saucer, poured over with milk, covered with foil and kept in a dark, warm place for 10 hours. Then the milk is drained, and the dill, without rinsing, is dried and sown. Such treatment increases seed germination by 3 times.
  • In soda. A weak solution is prepared from half a liter of warm water and half a tsp. soda. The seeds are kept in the solution for 2-3 hours. Then washed with clean water, dried, soaked in water for 2-3 days.
  • In onion infusion, puree, juice... There are various options for using this plant. Most often, dill is soaked in an infusion of onion husks (1-2 tablespoons of husks per 0.5 liters of water). The aging period is 2 days.

All popular methods are quite controversial, some gardeners praise them, others criticize them. After any soaking, there is no strict need to dry the seeds. This is only necessary to make it easier to distribute the material over the planting beds.

Seeding nuances

Sowing before winter is very good for getting early dill. The seeds will undergo natural stratification, when the soil warms up to + 3 ° C, they will actively sprout... For winter sowing, the seeds do not need to be soaked! We choose a place that is moderately bright in terms of the amount of sun with a good amount of snow in winter. It is necessary to prepare the soil there: it is dug up onto the bayonet of a shovel, brought in a bucket of organic matter per 1 square meter. m. Add chalk, ash or dolomite flour to the acidic soil (1 glass of ash per 1 sq. m.).

In the garden, furrows are made every 15 cm, their depth is 3-4 cm. Dill is sown 1 week before the onset of cold weather. If a little snow is expected, the plantings are covered with mulch, in the spring it will need to be raked. Seed consumption for winter sowing should be at least 1/4 more than indicated on the bag. Any of the methods described will allow you to get fresh dill greens several times a year. According to reviews, a simple soaking in water for 2 days is most effective. However, this is a matter of personal preference and convenience.

Many gardeners actively use growth stimulants, combine various methods from the above, bubble all the necessary seeds at the same time.
