A wide range of desks is presented by modern manufacturers. Due to the huge variety of textures and designs, each consumer will be able to choose a model to their taste and wallet.

Advantages

Classic writing desks are quite popular and have not gone out of fashion for many years.

These comfortable and versatile models offer the following benefits:

  • Environmental safety of products is ensured through the use of natural materials.
  • The design of the tables allows you to use the space ergonomically, successfully combining the storage area with the workplace.
  • The chic appearance and the use of expensive materials and finishing elements in the manufacture of tables give the room a solid look and indicate the high status and prosperity of the owners of the house.
  • Good repairability of wooden classic tables allows you to independently restore the damaged surface.

Varieties

Classic writing desks come in a huge assortment. By design type and functional properties, products are divided into the following types:

  • Table with a curbstone. The model can have one or two spacious cabinets, which can be equipped with shelves and internal drawers. The depth of the cabinet usually corresponds to the depth of the countertop and is 70-80 cm. The advantage of this design is the presence of a spacious storage area, which is very convenient when working with a large amount of documentation and literature. The downside of side tables is their heavy weight and difficulty when wet cleaning the floor.
  • Drawer table. The model is outwardly similar to cabinet products. The boxes are arranged vertically (one above the other) and can be either single-row or double-row. The advantage of such tables is their spaciousness and the possibility of sorting and separate storage of writing utensils, office supplies, books and documentation. The disadvantages include the bulkiness and heavy weight of the structure.
  • Table with superstructure. This model is characterized by the presence of additional vertically arranged shelves located above the table top, as well as having both a deaf and an open design. The advantage of such products is the comfortable placement of various objects, free space under the countertop that does not interfere with cleaning the room and a stylish appearance. The downside of the design is the impossibility of placing such a table in front of the window.
  • Table with drawers on long legs. This is a very elegant model. The legs are often curved, which looks quite elegant and non-standard. The drawers are located horizontally under the worktop and have a low height. Suitable for storing writing instruments and small items. This design is lightweight and does not hide the space. The disadvantages include the small capacity of the drawers.

Materials (edit)

The material from which the product is made determines its weight, cost, appearance, strength and durability. For the manufacture of classic desks, solid wood, MDF boards, laminated chipboard, fiberboard, metal and leather are used.

Solid wood

Tables are made from solid pine, walnut, birch, oak, larch, beech and mahogany. Due to its natural origin, the material is environmentally friendly, hygienic and hypoallergenic.

The ability of wood to paint well in different colors makes it possible to produce products in a wide range of colors, which makes it possible to choose a table for any shade of the interior.

For a classic style, products with dark lacquered surfaces, decorated with carvings and gilded elements are suitable. For delicate Provence, a simple white wooden table with a matte top would be a good option.

Classic tables can go well with some interiors, For example, in a rustic style, a light model with an imitation of rough woodwork, outlines of knots and a clear pattern of wood fibers is suitable. When decorating an African ethnic style, you can pay attention to bright yellow and red models, which can be made in both lacquered and matte versions. For the Scandinavian direction, a light beige table with clearly visible annual rings of wood and the absence of massive side drawers would be a good solution.

Italy and Indonesia are the leaders in the production of solid wood furniture. Intricate ornate patterns are hand-made by woodworkers, making each model unique and unrepeatable. For exclusive items, the table surface is decorated with natural leather, which can have different shades. Curved long legs are also a characteristic feature of Italian desks.

Such products look luxurious and sophisticated and serve as an independent element of home design.

Solid wood products lend themselves well to restoration and repair, which allows you to independently update the surface of the countertop by grinding and varnishing. The disadvantages of wooden desks are their heavy weight, poor mobility and high price. Lacquered surfaces are sensitive to mechanical and temperature influences: a mug of hot tea leaves thermal circles on the tabletop, and moving heavy objects on the table, for example, office equipment - stripes and scratches.

Rattan is also used in the manufacture of desks. The advantages of such models are their lightness, mobility and aesthetics. The disadvantages include difficulties in leaving and intolerance to high temperatures.

MDF boards

Due to its environmental friendliness and (in comparison with solid wood) lower price, the material is the most common type of raw material used for the manufacture of desks. The board consists of fine wood chips, dry pressed under high pressure and temperature. A carbamide resin acts as a binder.

Models made of MDF boards are distinguished by their high structural strength and increased moisture resistance. The structure of the material allows you to decorate the surface with patterned and carved elements.

Chipboard is also a popular material for making classic desks. Consists of compressed sawdust, bound with a composition that includes formaldehyde. This is a volatile compound that can be released from particle boards for ten years.

When buying such a model, you must make sure that there is a certificate of conformity confirming the permissible and harmless level of this substance.

If there is no accompanying documentation for the product, then it is better to refuse to buy such a table.

As a chipboard laminator, a PVC film is used, which, thanks to a huge number of different colors and textures, perfectly imitates the structure of wood fibers and the color of natural wood. This allows us to produce a wide range of products with a wide variety of shades and designs. Laminated models have high moisture resistance and increased strength, and their low cost makes them popular and in demand. The disadvantages of the design include the impossibility of making carved patterns and curved elements.

In addition to lamination, the veneering technique is used in the manufacture of classic desks. Veneer is a thin sheet of wood made from natural wood. It is made from ash, maple, birch, oak, cherry, walnut, alder, pear, beech and elm. The material is absolutely environmentally friendly and visually it cannot be distinguished from solid natural wood. It is widely used for cladding panel material in the manufacture of furniture, which is in no way inferior to its natural counterparts.

From above, the veneer is covered with varnish, the quality of which determines the resistance of the surface to mechanical stress.

Veneered tables are much lighter than wooden ones. They are highly durable and resistant to moisture. The material is beautiful and practical, does not need special care and has a long service life.

Veneer can be made not only from natural materials. Modern technologies make it possible to produce artificial veneered surfaces, visually and tactilely indistinguishable from natural materials.

Criterias of choice

When choosing a material for a desk, you need to focus on the design and size of the room. In small spaces, it is better to choose a product of simple shapes with small drawers, and for huge workrooms made in classic or retro style, a massive model made of natural wood with large side cabinets and roll-out drawers is suitable.

When choosing a classic writing table, no matter what material it is made of, it must be borne in mind that the size of the working surface cannot be less than 70 cm in length and 60 cm in width, and the height of the table top should vary between 70-80 cm.
