Crooman plum produces juicy fruits with a sweet taste. If you provide her with quality care, for many years you will be fascinated by the rich harvest of fleshy fruits, which are widely used both fresh and frozen, canned, as well as in the form of juices, compotes, and jellies.

Description of the variety

The described variety was allowed for use in 2002. This is a medium-sized home plum. Her crown is rare, round.

Fruit characteristics

Fruits are formed large, weighing up to 35 grams. The color is dark red with a blue cover.

Juicy yellow pulp is hidden inside.

Taste qualities

The Croman plum tastes sweet, with a pleasant aroma.

Ripening and fruiting

The tree bears fruit for 3 or 4 years from the moment of planting in the ground. Ripening period is medium early, bears fruit in August.

After planting a plum sapling on the site, of course, the question of the beginning of the fruiting of the tree always arises. Most varieties of plums begin to bear fruit 4 years after the seedling is planted. However, there are those that differ in an earlier or later period of fruiting. The difference in the beginning of fruiting is determined by the color of the plum. So, purple varieties always begin to bear fruit earlier - by 2-4 years, but yellow varieties differ in later fruiting.

Yield

This indicator is at a high level: 16 t / ha.

Growing regions

It is grown in the Central region of our country.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

This variety is partially self-fertile.

Growing and caring

Crooman plum grows best in a bright place, in any soil, preferably loose and fertile. It is better that no shadow from neighboring plants falls on the tree.

In cold climates, Crooman plum saplings are planted in the spring in April, before the buds open. The roots should be at least two meters away from groundwater. Plum planting rules in spring:

  • the planting pit is prepared in the fall or spring a few weeks before disembarkation;

  • the distance between plants should be 3-5 m;

  • the pit should be 80 cm deep and 70 cm wide;

  • two buckets of peat and humus are placed on the bottom, 2 circles of nitrophoska are added;

  • the root collar should be 5 cm above the ground level;

  • around the trunk of the Kroman plum, the near-trunk circle is cleared of weeds, abundantly moistened and covered with mulch.

If the area has a mild winter, you can plant trees in the fall. Rules for planting the Crooman plum in autumn:

  • the seedling should have five powerful roots up to 25 cm long;

  • the depth of the planting pit is at least 50 cm;

  • a mixture of fertile soil, 50 g of potassium salt, 100 g of superphosphate, 15 kg of humus is placed on the bottom;

  • the base is thoroughly watered with two buckets of water, sprinkled with sawdust;

  • before winter, the Crooman plum is watered 2-3 times more abundantly.

To increase the tree's fertility, autumn, summer and spring pruning of this variety is carried out.

It is recommended to start pruning in seedling condition. Care comes down to modeling skeletal branches with strong buds. The first pruning in spring is done in March:

  • the trunk is cleared of lateral branches at a distance of 40 cm from the ground;

  • the remaining shoots are cut in half;

  • the central trunk should be cut at a height of 1.5 m.

Then, in the summer, in the second half of July, the following pruning is performed:

  • all lateral shoots are shortened to 20 cm;

  • branches on the sides, directed downward, are cut to 15 cm.

The subsequent years also significantly affect the formation of the crown of the Crooman plum. The main thing is to get rid of the incapable shoots. Pruning young plums in spring with bud awakening involves cutting the stems by two-thirds. Such care will not allow the plant to grow quickly. In July, the branches of the Crooman plum are removed by 20 cm; in subsequent seasons, all crossed and damaged lateral shoots are removed.

Trimming of side shoots is done every year by two-thirds until the tree reaches its maximum height.

The fruiting Crooman plum is pruned to maximize its lifespan. In the case of an overgrown crown, spring pruning rules include:

  • removal of all dry, diseased, broken branches, and those that are directed inward;

  • remove shoots that rub against each other;

  • if the plant grows too much, the main trunk is reduced by one third.

As soon as Crooman in the garden shows signs of weakening growth (chopping fruits, the growth of shoots during the year is only 10-15 cm), rejuvenating pruning is carried out. Dry, diseased, old and sagging branches are removed, but fresh growth is not affected. Remove the lateral ramifications on the old skeleton. This procedure allows the tree to bear fruit more. Rejuvenating pruning of old plums by experienced gardeners is planned for early spring.

Young shoots are born in the place of the removed branches. In order not to overload the Crooman plum, two strong shoots are left, the rest are harvested in the middle of summer. The procedure lasts 3-4 years and takes place in several stages. If everything is done in one season, the tree will not stand up, and as a result, it will dry out. Correctly performed procedure will help to achieve fruiting for several more years.

Crooman loves moisture, therefore, during the period of a small amount of rains, the plums are watered once a week, during the drought period, 5-6 buckets per adult plant and 3-4 - for a young plant. A sign of a lack of moisture is cracks in the fruits, yellowing of the leaves.

For normal development and timely release to fruiting, the plum must be planted at a favorable time, provided with food and water. It is necessary to choose the right seedling, determine the location, prepare the planting pit in advance.
If you wish to get a full harvest in the future, and to renew the tree, the plum is grafted onto crops that are classified as pink. In this case, the plum cuttings are implanted on the mother plant, which will be responsible for further vegetation and nutrition of the scion.
Pruning plums is not easy and very important. If it is not carried out, the number of branches on the tree will be excessive, the crown will become too thick, the fruits will begin to shrink. You can trim plums in spring, summer and fall.
Plum feeding is one of the important stages of fruit crop care. In order to properly and fully feed the plum tree, various types of fertilizers are used. Both mineral and organic options are used. Many of the folk remedies are found to be useful and effective.

Disease and pest resistance

The Crooman plum has an average resistance to fungal diseases, therefore, it is better not to refuse preventive treatment with fungicides. The tree is characterized by high immunity to clasterosporium disease.

Before opening the buds in the spring, it is better to spray with the preparation No. 30 (500 g per 10 l of water). This treatment is directed against pests and fungal diseases. During flowering, Crooman is advised to be treated with one of the insecticides: "Alatar", "Aktara", "Fufanon Nova". Thus, the plum is protected from mite larvae, aphids.In the summer, 3-4 treatments are carried out with a period of 2 weeks "Fitoverm" + "Abiga-peak", the drug "Hom" helps gardeners quite well.

Despite the fact that plum is considered more hardy than many fruit trees, it is not immune from diseases. It is attacked by viral, fungal and bacterial infections, and parasitic insects harm it. It is necessary to notice and recognize the signs of plum disease in time. They are easier to deal with and defeat early on. Well, in order to protect the garden tree from such a misfortune in the future, preventive procedures can be carried out.

Resistance to soil and climatic conditions

Plum of this variety belongs to winter-hardy varieties.

Reproduction of plums will help save on planting material: you do not have to pay money for a seedling. In addition, this activity is simple and exciting. Plum can be propagated by cuttings, root shoots and layering.
