Handcrafting concrete surfaces is a long and laborious process. At the same time, the result of the finished work is often far from the desired one. The way out of this situation can be the use of a concrete grinder. In the article we will consider the varieties of these products, their features and characteristics.

Scope of application

The concrete grinder is used to grind the concrete screed in order to obtain a flawlessly even surface. It helps to prepare a flawless base for further floor cladding with various materials. However, in addition to making concrete evenness, grinding allows you to open the pores of a material with a capillary-porous structure. Otherwise, the composition that is planned to be applied to concrete will not be able to gain a foothold to the base, since the pores will remain closed.

By polishing previously used concrete, the weakened carbonized layer can be removed. In addition, with such processing, cement laitance is removed, which prevents high adhesion. Depending on the type of construction, the grinder may differ in the set of functions. Based on this, the scope of its application also differs. For example, you can use it:

  • remove layers of old material;
  • make a flat surface of the cemented floor;
  • get rid of bevels and bumps by smoothing them;
  • eliminate the unevenness of the concrete pavement;
  • roughen the surface.

Grinding is necessary so that further coatings do not peel off during operation from the concrete surface under the influence of chemical, mechanical or vibration loads.

The process of grinding concrete is quite complicated and time consuming, but with the help of a grinder it is much easier.

Peculiarities

Basically, concrete grinders are electric tools with rotating discs to which an abrasive element is connected. The grain size of the tool is different. The product can have power adjustment, due to which it is possible to achieve a different texture of the processed base. It can turn out matte, semi-matte, glossy or even mirrored with gloss.

Products of this line are characterized by the widest assortment, from which you can select units for both domestic use and for work on construction sites. Concrete grinders are efficient in surface treatment and significantly save labor time before facing stony surfaces.

They differ in the minimum degree of permissible error, which does not exceed 2 mm.

The machines themselves are optimally easy to operate and maintain. Basic knowledge and safety precautions are enough to work with them. Based on the variety, they provide a wide range of additional attachments, due to which you can achieve the desired processing quality. In addition, concrete grinders will have a rather long service life.

The negative nuances of such units include the fact that in the process of working with a stone surface, a lot of construction dust is formed.

Also, one cannot fail to note the high cost of consumables. As far as dust is concerned, this nuance can be solved by planning the framework. In addition to the traditional dry method, it can be wet.With this work, the work surface is first moistened and only then sanded.

This reduces the amount of dust and also helps to increase the life of the grinder.

With a dry type of processing, there is more dust, but irregularities are better visible here, and therefore it is easier to level them with this method of work.

Grinding machines are distinguished not only by their high efficiency, processing large areas in a short time. They are equipped with instructions that will shorten the time for choosing the right nozzle and carry out concrete processing at a high quality level.

Concrete grinders can be classified according to different criteria. For example, units differ in functional meaning and design. According to the use of grinding devices, there are household and professional ones. The first products are used at home for surface treatment of small areas.

Such units are characterized by low power, hand grinders are bought for work in the house or in the country.

They are not designed for long-term operation and significant loads; this can cause the grinding equipment to break down.

In contrast, professional concrete floor sanding technology stands out for its higher drive power.

This affects the performance of the equipment, which is many times greater than that of household devices. This technique is used by construction companies engaged in the implementation of large-scale work on the construction of buildings and structures for various purposes. This equipment consumes more power, due to its bulky size, it is not very convenient to use. In addition, professional units are more expensive than household counterparts.

According to the type of work, the products are divided into leveling machines and grinders. Options designed to level the screed are used to grout joints and eliminate defects in the base of a concrete screed. Such tools are not intended for other work. Profile counterparts for grinding stone and concrete monolith give smoothness to stone and asphalt concrete. They are additionally equipped with metal brushes.

Design options

The machines can be classified according to the type of grinding equipment into 5 lines: angular, belt, orbital (eccentric), vibration and mosaic grinding. Each type of technique has its own characteristics and characteristics.

  • Angle-type products are used for polishing and grinding concrete. These are small units for performing elementary options, the purpose of which is to work in hard-to-reach places. They are distinguished by the function of cutting hard materials. These are hand-held concrete grinders, which are called "grinders" and "grinders". They not only cut, but also clean the surface, and are suitable for working in confined spaces. Depending on the modification, the products can be equipped with an anti-vibration mechanism. This function is convenient when working with an unevenly worn sanding disc. Such equipment can be used for cutting natural and artificial stone.
  • Tape varieties are used when rough processing is necessary. Products of this type are ineffective in working with a concrete base. In fact, these are hand-made products, which are used for the primary processing of concrete (for example, polishing and eliminating irregularities when pouring concrete). The technique works at the expense of an abrasive tape on rollers, somewhat reminiscent of a tank track. The operating speed of this type of unit is directly related to the size of the abrasive tool. An emery belt is in contact with concrete here, which is located on cylindrical drums. The intensity of processing the working surface depends on the speed of its movement.
  • The eccentric type technique is used for processing for further finishing. Despite this, the surface after grinding is of sufficient quality. This is ensured by the simultaneous operation of vibrational and rotational movements of the working element of the structure.These units are considered professional equipment, but they are not designed to work in corners and hard-to-reach places.
  • As for mosaic grinding electric tools, then they can work not only with concrete of any type, but also with marble. The set of options provides for both rough preparatory processing and fine work, for example, mirror polishing the floor. These machines are equipped with discs for roughing surfaces with high adhesion to adhesives.
  • The vibration-grade technique is purchased for the pre-finishing of concrete and stone. The grinders in such equipment are abrasive sheets with different grain sizes, which are fixed on a special sole. This consumable often requires replacement, which is the main disadvantage of vibration grinding technology. The intensity of the action of the working element can vary based on the amplitude of vibrational vibrations.

How to choose?

Given the huge list of such equipment offered by brands for sale, you will have to choose a product taking into account a number of parameters.

You need to watch:

  • on the power of the power tool;
  • grinding area;
  • rotation frequency;
  • type of construction.

It is worth noting the following for yourself: with a power of 0.8-1.4 kW, the operating time will not exceed 3 hours.

Further, in order to prevent overheating of the engine, you will have to turn off the device from the network and take a break for at least 15–20 minutes. This technique cannot cope with complex grinding. In fact, this power is inherent in hand tools. When you need a professional model, you need to look for the power to be more than 1.4 kW. You can work with such a unit for a long time without fear that it will overheat.

It is worth paying attention to the diameter of the working disc. For example, in household varieties, this indicator does not exceed 23 cm.However, one must understand that each type of work may require its own parameter. For example, for finishing work on concrete polishing, a disc with a diameter of up to 12.5 cm is needed.If you need to clean up a concrete screed, for this, options with a diameter range from 12.5 to 18 cm are selected.Primary processing is performed with modifications with a diameter from 18 to 23 cm.

Looking closely at the diameter of the disc, one should not forget about the rotation speed. The larger it is, the smaller the parameters of the disc diameter.

In turn, the machining will be finer at higher rpms. In addition, the cost of the product cannot be ignored. Quality equipment doesn't come cheap. In this case, it will not be possible to save money, because, as you know, a miser pays twice.

Grinding stones differ in grit size and are consumables. They need to be selected based on the type of grinding. Dust is removed from them with an industrial vacuum cleaner, while grinding can be both dry and wet. Stones are marked with grain size, hardness and bond.

As for the additional functionality, you need to pay attention to the equipment of the equipment.

For example, the stick reduces vibration and contributes to an even distribution of forces during operation. The dust collector removes dust in a timely manner, it can be built-in or removable. Autonomy of work is convenient where it is not possible to connect to the network.

Start inhibit is another useful option to reduce the risk of accidental starting of the unit. Convenience in work is also added by the option of water supply, which reduces the concentration of dust and prolongs the service life of the equipment.

How to use?

If you plan to grind concrete and stone surfaces on your own, at the initial stage of work it is necessary to prepare the base itself. If there are reinforcement bars on it, they get rid of them. After that, the entire surface of the future treatment is tapped. The fill must initially be of high quality and durable. If there are flaws, they are removed before the start of grinding.In addition, it removes cracks and crevices.

Grinding work can be started 2 or even 3 weeks after the concrete is poured. This time is enough for the base to gain strength.

Base processing begins with a hardener. This stage of work helps to increase the screed to moisture. Then they start grinding using discs with diamond segments. You need to work in protective clothing, goggles and a respirator.

In the work on roughing, abrasive 40 is used, for fine finishing, grain size from 500 to 1500 is used. After that, the concrete base is polished. At the final stage, the plinth is mounted and the surface is covered with polyurethane varnish. If it is necessary to give the base the texture of a stone, take special discs and perform a mirror polish.

As for the elimination of potholes, for this purpose they use a "grinder". If you choose the optimal size of the circle, you will be able to quickly process a large area. When the base has a high percentage of damage, do otherwise. Eliminate dust, expand potholes on the sides up to 3 mm, clean potholes and prime them. After that, the pits are sealed with fresh mortar and only after it dries, they start grinding.

The tool must be used strictly for its intended purpose. After work, it must be cleaned of dust and construction dirt, having previously disconnected it from the power supply.

You cannot use the equipment without reading the instructions - this is fraught with injury during operation.

If the switch is defective, it is strictly unacceptable to use the grinder. Do not store the product in the reach of households and pets.
