Since the gable is the face of the building, homeowners are always looking to make it look beautiful. Most often, various types of siding are used to decorate this part of the house.

Advantages and disadvantages

Siding the gable has both pros and cons. For a start, it's worth learning about the benefits of this material.

  • It is very easy to install. You can cope with the siding installation process without the help of professionals. The main thing is to study in advance all the characteristics of the panels used and prepare for work.
  • The material looks nice and stylish. It can be used in the decoration of both a private wooden house or a bath, and a brick building.
  • Siding does not need additional maintenance. The only exception is wood paneling.
  • The material is lightweight, therefore, it can be installed on a light crate made of galvanized profiles or simple wooden bars.
  • There is a large selection of materialsthat differ in color and texture. Therefore, you can easily find something suitable for yourself.
  • Panels and all additional elements are cheap. You can buy them at almost any hardware store.

The disadvantages of this material include the fact that if there is a need for repairs, you will have to disassemble the entire canvas at once, since it is impossible to replace only one panel.

Material selection

There are several different types of siding that are used to sew up a gable.

Vinyl

This type of siding is a lightweight plastic panel. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. This type of siding can also be used for wall cladding and plinths. It should be noted that it is easy to find additional accessories for panels made of this material: profiles of the desired shape, platbands, window strips, internal and external corners.

Vinyl siding is of high quality and durability. Such panels can last for several decades without losing their visual appeal. In addition, this material is completely safe for humans and resistant to temperature extremes. Caring for vinyl siding is very easy, because the panels are easy to clean with plain water.

The disadvantages of this material include the fact that bright panels can fade over time. But if you choose light siding, then it will not be so noticeable. It is also worth noting that the panels are easily damaged by mechanical stress. Therefore, when installing, you must act very carefully.

To avoid trouble, you need to buy vinyl panels from trusted manufacturers.

Metal

These panels are made of durable galvanized steel. From above, for greater attractiveness, they are covered with polymer materials. Like vinyl panels, metal panels come in a variety of colors and sizes. The gables are sheathed with metal siding, since it is durable and resistant to sunlight and temperature extremes. Besides, such panels are not afraid of mechanical stress.

But this material also has drawbacks. So, if the top layer of the coating has been damaged, then the material can corrode. In addition, it should be borne in mind that metal panels are more expensive than plastic ones. They are also more difficult to install.

Typically, metal siding is used for cladding non-residential buildings.

Basement

There are 3 types of basement panel textures. They are stylized as wood, brick and stone.... They can be used not only for facing the pediment, but also for covering the entire building.

The main advantage of such panels is a wide variety of textures and colors. In addition, almost everyone notes their high strength and ease of installation.

Ceramic

This material began to be used for decoration relatively recently, but has already gained popularity among lovers of unique and originally designed buildings. Keram siding is characterized by high strength and fire resistance. It retains its external attractiveness for a long time and does not need additional care. But despite all these positive qualities, it is very rarely used for sheathing gables.

The fact is that such panels are quite heavy and expensive. In addition, they are difficult to assemble by yourself.

Acrylic

Externally, acrylic panels are very similar to vinyl. At the same time, they do not fade so quickly in the sun, so you can safely use panels of a more saturated color for cladding houses. Acrylic siding is highly durable and resistant to chemicals. Therefore, in the care of such panels, you can use any detergent.

The only drawback to acrylic panels is that they are more expensive than vinyl panels. But since this material is of better quality, then its price is fully justified.

The rest of its disadvantages appear only if a serious mistake was made in the process of its production.

Wood

There are 2 types of wood siding:

  • flat panels stylized as timber;
  • volumetric panels resembling logs in their shape.

The technical characteristics of the siding depend on what kind of wood the slats are made from. The best quality material is considered to be Angora pine. It is resistant to temperature changes and practically does not change its appearance over time. Larch siding is also popular.

The material is lightweight, durable, not afraid of bad weather, heat and cold. But if it is not properly dried, then over time it can crack.

Those who want to save money should pay attention to composite wood siding. Outwardly, it practically does not differ from the real one. Due to its high characteristics, this material lasts as long as panels from more expensive materials. That's why you can safely buy it for finishing a residential building or other buildings on your site.

But all of these panel options have their drawbacks. So, they are all flammable. They also need constant care. Otherwise, the material will very quickly lose its attractiveness, and the panels will have to be replaced.

Concrete

Concrete siding contains sand, cement and fiberglass. The material is of high quality. It is environmentally friendly and completely safe for people and the environment.

Concrete siding is easy to install. No frame is needed for its installation. It can be attached directly to the wall. It has the same disadvantages as ceramic siding: high price and high weight. In addition, it is difficult to handle and cut.

Separately, it should be noted that the panels can be positioned horizontally and vertically. The second ones are a little more difficult to mount. In addition, vertical siding is not very common in Russia, so it can be quite difficult to find such panels.

It should be remembered that horizontal siding cannot be installed vertically. Firstly, it is difficult, and secondly, incorrectly installed panels will not last long. Therefore, soon the work will have to be redone again.

Payment

Before starting work, you need to calculate the number of panels that will need to be used in the process. The amount of material used depends on the type of gable. The most common pediments are triangular.

It is very easy to calculate the required number of panels. The height must be multiplied by the width and halved. Thus, it will turn out to determine the area of the pediment. If the roof is broken or trapezoidal, then you need to count in 2 stages.

  • To begin with, the pediment must be conditionally divided by a horizontal line into 2 parts. You get 2 shapes: a triangle and a quadrangular trapezoid. The area of the first is calculated according to the previously described scheme. With the lower figure, you need to do a little differently. The length of the bottom and top of the trapezoid must be divided by 2 and multiplied by its height.
  • After that, it remains only to sum up the areas of the triangle and the trapezoid.

Based on these numbers, it is easy to calculate how many panels you need to buy. It is best to purchase material with a small margin, especially if you have to sheathe a pediment with uneven edges or window frames.

How to sew with your own hands?

You can do the cladding of the pediment with siding with your own hands. A simple step-by-step instruction will help with this.

Preparation

Before starting work, you need to build reliable scaffolding. You can use ready-made prefabricated structures. But if this is not possible, they can be replaced with ordinary boards. Next, you need to start preparing the foundation.

  • All protruding elements must be dismantled from the pediment.
  • Then the base must be put in order. If it is wooden, it must be well treated with an impregnation against fungus and decay. On the stone pediment, all existing cracks must be repaired. The finished surface must be level, dry and clean.
  • After that, you can start marking and fastening the battens. The first step is to define the bottom horizontal line. For this purpose, you can use the usual building level. As a lathing, you can use metal profiles or wooden bars. If the choice fell in the direction of wood, it must be carefully treated with an antiseptic. The metal profile does not need additional processing. But it is worth remembering that it is more expensive and more difficult to install.
  • The distance between the bars that are attached to the pediment should be no more than 40 cm. They must be fastened evenly so that after the end of the work everything looks beautiful and neat. It is very easy to control this process. It is enough to periodically check with a building level whether the bars are located correctly.
  • After that, you need to take care of the warming of the pediment. The space between the profiles must be filled with basalt mineral wool. Further, the pediment must be sheathed with a special film to ensure waterproofing and wind protection. You can fix it with ordinary staples using a stapler, paying special attention to the joints. Instead of a waterproofing film, special protective membranes can also be used.

Cladding technology

The work begins with the installation of the starting bar.

  • Self-tapping screws do not need to be tightened completely. If screwed in all the way, then they will not be able to move when the panels expand, which will lead to deformation of the siding. The starter bar must be perfectly aligned. The result of the work largely depends on this. The fact that the starter bar is installed correctly will be evidenced by a click, which is heard at the moment when it is aligned with the profile spike.
  • Then you can proceed to the installation of the remaining panels. The space between the fastening arm and the profile must be approx. 2 mm.
  • The finishing strip is installed before the installation of the outermost row of siding.
  • Next, the joint of the panels must be closed with a special plastic corner.
  • Having coped with the gable sheathing, you can proceed to the design of the overhang or the installation of windbreak strips.

After all the work is completed, you need to remove the remaining construction waste.

Useful Tips

Finishing the gable with siding does not take much time. The process is simple, therefore, it is possible to cope with the cladding of this part of the building with panels without anyone's help. If everything is done correctly, the pediment will be reliably protected and will become a real decoration of the facade of the house. In order to avoid mistakes in the process of work, you should always listen to the advice of professionals.

  • Panels and all additional fittings are best purchased from one manufacturer. Before buying, you need to draw a diagram of the pediment and calculate the number of planks that will be used for sheathing. After all, if you buy panels from different parties, they may differ slightly in shades from each other.
  • As a heater, you can use not only mineral wool, but also foam or glass wool. For greater effect, the pediment can be insulated not only from the outside, but also from the inside.
  • Do not install siding without a crate. This can be done only if the surface of the pediment is perfectly flat.
  • To make the facade of the house look more beautiful, you can also perform the cladding of the gable overhang. The material should also be attached to the crate.
  • If there is a window on the pediment, then it must also be properly sheathed. To do this, you need to use special window strips. It is worth remembering that they are quite expensive. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the amount of purchased material as accurately as possible.
  • When facing the pediment in the cold season, the panels must be kept indoors for 10–12 hours before work. This will allow the material to acquire the flexibility necessary for installation.
