Installation of siding on OSB slabs is one of the simplest ways of exterior decoration, suitable for protecting the facade walls of buildings and structures. All work is carried out in a short time and without unnecessary effort, you can cope with them yourself, without helpers. However, questions about whether it is possible to mount siding directly on OSB without crate and with it arise quite often, which is why it is worthwhile to figure out how to properly sheathe a house with your own hands before starting installation.

Peculiarities

Siding - metal or made of polymer materials, is produced in the form of profiled strips attached to the surface of the walls. Installation on OSB-plates in this case differs little from other methods of cladding buildings. But there is a certain specificity associated with the features of the panels themselves. Initially, high-quality OSB has an impregnation that provides it with protection from decay, moisture gain, and the influence of atmospheric factors. But its properties are preserved only in the absence of damage to the structure of the slab itself.

If the structure has holes from self-tapping screws or chips, moisture can get inside the sheet. In addition, savings on the quality of the material during construction also play a role.

In most cases, cheap OSB-1, OSB-2, designed for use inside buildings, are not too resistant to weathering.

It is worth adding to this the ability of metal siding to accumulate condensation on its rear surface, and the result will be disappointing. In just 1-2 years, the surface of the slab under such a sheathing without a crate and a ventilation gap will be black from fungus and mold.

In the variant with vinyl siding, everything is not so simple. If the ventilation gap is not necessary, direct installation of the cladding material on the slab is also possible. The lathing will definitely be needed if there are high risks of condensation. In addition, with its help, you can fairly quickly align curved walls. Siding will hide all defects.

Siding selection

When cladding walls made of OSB, you have to pay special attention to the quality of the materials used. Frame structures do not differ in significant bearing capacity, so siding becomes the best finishing option. Among its varieties, the following options can be distinguished.

  • Plastic. For the manufacture of facade panels of this type, acrylic or vinyl polymers are used. The finished products are resistant to moisture, do not require maintenance, and have a long service life. The strength of the planks depends on the thickness of the siding, the ribbing of the profile. Vinyl and acrylic panels must be mounted with a small gap in order to avoid distortion of their geometry during temperature extremes.
  • Metallic. Siding of this type has an outer polymer coating, painted in different colors. Elements are made of galvanized steel. For OSB boards, metal siding of the vertical type is used, which minimizes the load on the frame. Walls with such a coating necessarily require additional insulation and sound insulation, self-tapping screws are used in combination with rubber gaskets.
  • Ceramic. Siding of this type is made from clay with additives and plasticizers. In terms of its properties, it is as close as possible to ceramic tiles. The panels are available in various designs, most often in the form of imitation of brick, masonry.
  • Fiber cement. The best option for siding for buildings from OSB boards, along with vinyl. The finished panels have a relief structure, most often imitate wood. The material is suitable for painting, has an average weight, does not overload wall structures.

In addition to these types, today on sale there are combined OSB boards with a finishing layer already applied to the surface. It uses a decor similar to fiber cement. Rough panels can be easily painted in any color; they do not require additional lathing for installation.

Mounting methods

When erecting frame houses with OSB wall cladding, siding can still be attached directly to the sheets, provided that they are covered with a layer of waterproofing, vapor barrier or membrane materials. Even a large building can be sheathed without crate in a very short time. But the further success of the operation will depend solely on the observance of all important recommendations. The order of installation work will be as follows.

  1. Calculation of materials. It is necessary in order to eliminate downtime.
  2. Preparing the walls. They are covered with protective compounds, leveled. In the absence of a crate, any problems with the geometry of the building will immediately be clearly visible. If external insulation is required, it is done at this stage.
  3. Fastening strips to external and internal corners, platbands on doors and windows. This is the only way to avoid problems with their subsequent installation.
  4. Performing markup. The level line is indicated along which you need to navigate when fixing the planks.
  5. Fastening the starting profile. It is located at the lowest point of the wall. Fastened with self-tapping screws.
  6. Fixation of the rest of the profile. It is carried out using a lock connection.
  7. Installation of additional strips near window, doorways.
  8. Connecting corner elements. Fastening decorative strips.
  9. Installation of the finishing panel under the eaves.

Plating the gable or the entire house, done correctly, even without the lathing, will not increase the risk of condensation. But this method is only suitable for vinyl siding. Metal can be mounted exclusively on the crate. It can be metal or wood.

When installing the hinged profile system on the OSB base, the slats with a thickness of 20-30 mm are fixed, which are necessary to create a ventilation gap. The calculation and marking are preliminarily performed, the walls are freed from any protruding elements and extraneous attachments. Horizontal and vertical profiles are fixed in increments of 30-40 cm, the choice of the appropriate option depends on the method of laying the decorative panels themselves.

The guide supports should be perpendicular to the siding.
