Wireless floodlights are a special type of lighting fixture designed for various guarded objects, construction sites, country houses and summer cottages. As a rule, these places are located far from city lighting.

Even in the last century, spotlights were used to work on stage, installed on classified objects or in shop windows. Today, any summer resident can have an "artificial sun" at hand.

Advantages and disadvantages

When deciding on the purchase and installation of a wireless floodlight, you need to take into account all the positive and negative aspects of this device. Let's start with the pros.

  • Minimum power consumption. The technologies used to manufacture wireless lighting devices are quite economical. A wireless spotlight, having the same wattage as a simple electric lamp, will illuminate 9 times brighter.
  • Long service life. The continuous working time ranges from 30,000 to 50,000 hours. At the same time, an incandescent lamp works no more than 1000 hours, and a mercury lamp - up to 10,000 hours.
  • Works even in the toughest conditions. The wireless flashlight is not afraid of shocks, it can work in shaking conditions and in any position, as well as at an air temperature from -40 to +40 degrees Celsius.
  • Large selection of color temperatures. The range allows you to select fixtures in a color range from cool blue to warm red. It is the shade of the lighting that affects comfort, correct color rendering and color perception.

There is only one negative side to wireless lighting - it's high price. But the disadvantage is made up by the fact that the device does not require additional maintenance costs, as well as a long service life.

What are they?

A floodlight is a kind of luminaire into which a light source is mounted. According to the features of use, the lamps are divided into several types.

  • Embedded or hidden. The equipment is built into the surface plane or acts as a decorative element.
  • Stationary. This refers to the capital installation of the searchlight, without further moving it. Equipped with a mechanical or automatic switch.
  • Solar powered floodlights. The energy source is sunlight. The design includes halogen lamps from 100 W. They are used to illuminate entrances, parking lots, in offices, and also as a decoration.
  • Waterproof floodlights. They act as a decoration for artificial waterfalls, swimming pools, fountains.
  • Battery type. The equipment is powered by 12 volt voltage transformers.
  • Portable. Lighting devices with small dimensions and weight. You can mount them in a variety of places. They run on batteries, which is especially convenient for summer residents, fishermen, hunters and others.
  • There are models of floodlights with built-in motion sensors (which can be purchased separately). It is a useful addition to keep your equipment running economically. The detector turns on the lighting if movement is detected in a specific area.
  • There are luminaires with photocells. They turn off the lights in the morning and afternoon, and turn them on at nightfall.

By the type of light, floodlights are divided into several varieties.

  • Halogen. In such devices, halogen lamps are used, consisting of a cylinder filled with a buffer gas and a tungsten coil.Initially, the lamps were filled with iodine atoms, but due to the reaction taking place inside (the substance corroded the metal surface), the shade of the lighting turned green. Later, production switched to working with chlorine, bromine and fluorine atoms. Manufacturers are now filling cylinders with methyl bromide. Such products are more expensive, but they have a high power rating and service life. By structure, halogen lamps are of linear or capsule type, with a built-in outer bulb, with an inner reflector. Mostly used to illuminate objects where intense light is not required. Halogen floodlights are not suitable for outdoor use, as high humidity can lead to an explosion

  • Metal halide. It differs from the previous type by the presence of a trigger mechanism in the spotlight. Its components are a choke and a transformer. The lighting device starts to work only after the lamp has completely warmed up, usually it takes about 6-7 minutes. If, after turning off the lamp, a restart is required, this will happen only after 10 minutes, when the lamp has cooled down. That is why a sensor is installed in the design of the floodlight to prevent it from overheating.

Due to its brightness, metal halide equipment is used as street lighting

  • Sodium. Sodium lamp equipment has excellent light output, therefore it is used in large and open areas. The main advantage and feature of such projectors is that in the event of a failure of the trigger mechanism or sodium lamp, a conventional incandescent lamp can be installed in it. For this, the starting equipment is disconnected, and instead of it 220 V is connected directly to the cartridge.

  • LED floodlights. These are the most popular lighting fixtures today. They contain all the advantages of other types - durability, minimum energy consumption, high luminous efficiency, protection against shock and moisture. The light source here are LED matrices or COB LEDs (when the entire matrix is covered with a phosphor, which creates the illusion of one large LED). The only drawback is that the equipment can overheat, which can lead to a decrease in the service life.

  • Infrared. IR illuminators emit a special light that is invisible to humans, but allows CCTV cameras to capture an image in an unlit place or at night. Used for security systems.

Popular models

LED floodlight Falcon Eye FE-CF30LED-pro in the ranking of LED lighting fixtures it takes a leading place. The model has a long service life, is practically insensitive to frost, protected from moisture and dust. Easy to repair and install. The downside is the high price. Main technical characteristics:

  • searchlight power - 30 W;
  • light flux - 2000 lm;
  • allowable voltage - 85-265 V;
  • color temperature - up to 6500 K.

Solar powered floodlight with motion sensor WOLTA WFL-10W / 06W - an outdoor lighting device with small dimensions, decent protection against dust and moisture, long service life and low cost. Of the minuses, one can single out - the inconvenience of installation (additional tools are needed), the deterioration of brightness with voltage drops. Specifications:

  • color temperature - 5500 K;
  • light flux - 850 lm;
  • allowable voltage - 180-240 V;
  • power - 10 watts.

Spotlight with motion sensor on the street Novotech 357345 - another equally popular LED model with touch control. It has a high degree of dust and moisture protection, thanks to which operation is possible in all weather conditions. The motion sensor has a visibility angle of 130 degrees, a visibility distance of 8 m, and a long service life of up to 25,000 hours. There is only one drawback - it is not resistant to frost, if the temperature drops below –20 degrees Celsius, the searchlight will fail. Specifications:

  • color temperature - 5000 K;
  • power - 6 W;
  • light flux - 480 lm.

Selection Tips

First of all, it is taken into account which object or area will be illuminated. Small area - this includes gazebos, billboards, paths in the garden or garage, porch or veranda. A floodlight with a power of up to 50 W and a color temperature of 4000 K is suitable.

Medium size area - small stalls and warehouses, summer cottage, parking. For such areas, it is better to take a lighting device with a power of 50 to 100 W, with a color temperature of 4000 to 6000 K. Large area - these can be large storage rooms, hypermarkets working around the clock, parking areas near new buildings.

For such areas, the floodlight must have a power of at least 100 W and with a color temperature of 6000 K.

Color temperature - this parameter indicates what tint the lighting will give.

  • 3500 K - this is a warm white light with a soft tint, it will not dazzle, ideal for verandas and gazebos.
  • 3500-5000 K - daylight, the shade is close to the sun, does not tire the eyes. Suitable for warehouses and offices.
  • From 5000 K - cold white light. Suitable for lighting large areas - parking lots, warehouses, courtyards.

The durability of the spotlight. The operation of the equipment is directly affected by weather conditions and the external environment. When choosing, you need to pay attention to two protection characteristics:

  • permissible temperature - the indicator is selected based on the conditions of a particular region, mainly models are designed for weather from -40 to +40 degrees;
  • protection against dust and moisture - has the letter designation IP, followed by a number, the higher it is, the better the dust and moisture protection.

A properly selected searchlight is capable of making a whole work of art from any territory or building. Lighting focuses on architectural details or brightly colored advertisements.

Searchlights are in demand in many areas of activity - construction, production, security systems, as well as for lighting private territories and country houses.
