In every apartment there is a lot of things that are rarely or seasonally used. We have to find a storage space for them. In the existing furniture, free shelves or drawers do not always remain, and the space and interior of the apartment often simply do not allow the installation of additional chests of drawers or cabinets.

Surely everyone remembers from childhood a mezzanine in the corridor to which skates, old books, empty jars of grandmother's jam and many other items were sent. The children's imagination was simply amazed at how so much can fit there.

These space-saving storage designs are not a thing of the past. Thanks to the variety of materials and finishes, the mezzanine can also become an interior decoration today.

Mezzanines can be of various types:

  • Open and closed structures. The closed mezzanine has doors. They can be swing or sliding. Thanks to the appropriate finish, such designs fit well into the interior. Accordingly, the open-type design is a hinged shelf without doors, sometimes divided into sections. In this case, the contents of the mezzanine will be available for review. Alternatively, you can cover such a mezzanine with a decorative curtain.
  • One-sided and two-sided designs. The two-sided mezzanine can be hung in a long aisle, it will have doors on both sides. Typically, such structures have a large area and can accommodate a large number of items. The contents of the shelves can be accessed from both the front and rear sides. The one-sided type has doors only on the front side, the back side is blind. Usually the back wall of such a structure is the wall of the apartment.
  • Corner location. The corner mezzanine can have a larger size, as well as close corner communications or ventilation system unnecessary in the interior. Often used in the kitchen or bathroom. In the hallway, it can be installed on the upper tiers of corner cabinets.
  • Modular or furniture mezzanines. From the name it is clear that such cabinet structures are attached directly to furniture. Usually these mezzanines are located on the upper tiers of cabinets. Depending on the model of a particular cabinet, the design can be angular or rectangular. The size of the internal space of such a design will also depend on the height of the cabinet and the free space between the upper tier and the ceiling of the room.
  • Stationary or hinged mezzanine. It is fixed between two closely spaced walls just below the ceiling. The most common option for installation in a corridor. However, it requires a sufficient ceiling height.

How to place?

Most often, a hallway is chosen to place hinged structures. The space at the front door under the ceiling is not occupied by anything, and placing a decorated hinged shelf there will make it useful and decorate the space.

Another suitable place to place a mezzanine is a long corridor. Suspended structures can be located along the perimeter of the corridor under the ceiling. This will increase the usable area of the mezzanine. It is worth remembering that by installing a hinged structure, we reduce the height of the ceiling. The bottom of the mezzanine should be decorated so that it does not spoil the design of the living room. For this option, the most suitable will be two-sided structures with doors on both sides.Otherwise, many objects will simply be very difficult to reach.

You can come up with your own version of the mezzanine location, based on the characteristics of the room and interior design. For example, gallery mezzanines located under the ceiling look great in large rooms. The design describes the entire perimeter of the room. This option is suitable for storing your home library.

Manufacturing

The mezzanine of the type you need can be made with your own hands, this process is simple enough for self-execution.

In this case, the following algorithm of actions should be adhered to:

  • Initially, you should decide on the location of your structure and the material for its manufacture. Suspended structures can be made of PVC, wood, chipboard, drywall. If you intend to store a large number of things on the mezzanine, it is better to opt for lighter and more durable materials in order to exclude the collapse of the structure due to the large weight. You should also consider the thickness of the walls in the room.
  • Further measurements are taken for the future design. The location of the shelves is noted. Measurements are taken from the ceiling to the bottom of the structure. Depth is marked. The resulting design parameters are entered into the drawing. With the furniture type mezzanine, the space between the cabinet and the ceiling, its depth and height is measured.
  • After the acquisition and preparation of the necessary materials, the marking and preparation of the installation site of the hinged or modular structure is done. In the case of the hinged version, it will be necessary to additionally take care of the reliability of fastening the bottom of the mezzanine.
  • Retaining guides are fixed to the walls. They are usually metal for added strength. Wooden retaining plates can be made or purchased. The guides are seated on construction glue, after which they must be additionally fixed with large self-tapping screws. Do not forget to make holes for self-tapping screws in the plates in advance. After planting the guides on the glue, it will be very inconvenient to do this.
  • Next, you need to build the structure itself and fix it in the place of the canopy. The bottom of the mezzanine is laid on the guides fixed on both sides. Since the bottom of the structure will lie on the plates, it is not necessary to screw it on. You can fix it with building glue.
  • A frame is attached to the front of the structure. It can be knocked down from thin wooden slats, or it can be metal plates fastened together. For the frame, you can also use a PVC profile. The frame is also installed on the guide profile, fixed with glue and self-tapping screws.
  • If the internal space of the mezzanine involves dividing it into sections or shelves, then this should be done before hanging the doors. For shelves on the walls, metal holders are screwed on both sides at the same height. Shelves made of chipboard or wood are attached to them with screws.
  • Doors are hung on the finished and fixed mezzanine, if any. The hinges are attached to the front frame of the structure. For the doors, it is better to choose lightweight material and not make them too large. This will prevent the flaps from sagging. Sliding sliding doors do not require hinges. For these, it is necessary to install a guide rail at the top and bottom of the front frame.
  • At the final stage, the external finishing of the entire structure is carried out.

How to register?

The finished mezzanine will not look harmonious if it does not fit into the interior of the room. No matter how comfortable and durable the hinged structure itself is, the design of the apartment should not suffer from its presence. A variety of materials and decorating elements make it possible to implement almost any idea for the design of the mezzanine.

The structural elements that need finishing are rather small. The mezzanine does not have large outer surfaces like a wardrobe or bulky chest of drawers. In fact, you only need to decorate the outer doors (if any) and the bottom of the mezzanine. In open types of structures, you will have to pay attention to the design of the shelves and visible internal surfaces.

If the option is chosen for the location on the upper tier of the cabinet, the finish must be selected in accordance with the color of the furniture over which the mezzanine is installed. This is not necessarily a complete coincidence of style and color scheme; it is quite possible to use organic color transitions.

If the design of the corridor is made in the country style, then the furniture, including the hinged mezzanine, can be finished with wenge wood. Modern manufacturers have mastered the imitation of natural materials in artificial products. If panels made of natural wenge wood are not affordable, you can complete the finish with PVC panels stylized for this material or decorative film.

For the corridor, finishing the bottom of the hinged structure with mirrored panels is very relevant. This will visually return the ceiling height space lost during the installation of the mezzanine. Remember to make the outer surface of the bottom of the structure light. It will be better than finishing the lower part in dark colors and losing the visual space of the corridor.

You can equip the space of the hinged shelf itself in different ways. One option is to divide it into small sections for smaller items. If it is supposed to store large things in the mezzanine, it is better not to divide the space or to make two large sections.
