  • Natural silk wrinkles a lot. If you have purchased a pillowcase from this material, then be prepared for the fact that its surface will be perfectly flat for not very long. Many consumers perceive this quality of silk as a disadvantage.
  • Natural silk is quite expensive. High-quality pillows and other bedding made of such material will cost the buyer a lot.

Varieties and types of filler

There are several types of silk:

Tussa

This type of raw material is obtained from silkworm cocoons that live in their natural environment. They feed on the leaves of various plants. As a result, threads of a scarlet shade are obtained. Such materials require chemical bleaching.

  • This process has a negative effect on the structure of the material, making it less durable and elastic.
  • Another disadvantage of this variety is that harmful microorganisms are often found in it.
  • Over time, the threads in the Tussa fabric may start to creep apart. This is due to the fact that the silkworm living in the wild gnaws its way.

Things made from such material are of the lowest quality and are inexpensive. They do not last long and do not differ in wear resistance.

Mulberry

This variety is of higher quality.These are silkworm cocoons grown in captivity. They are fed only with mulberry leaves. The result is a good harvest of white cocoons. They are sorted out exclusively by hand.

  • Silk threads of this grade are more durable. They are characterized by a twisted shape and a length of 600 m.
  • Mulberry yarns do not require chemical intervention and additional treatments that adversely affect the material. They easily and quickly unravel from the cocoon and are firmly connected to each other.
  • This type of silk is subdivided into three classes - A, B, C. The most expensive, strong and durable products are category A silk. It has long fibers.
  • Pillows made from this raw material have excellent thermal performance. They are distinguished by their large volume. Their surface is very pleasant to the touch.
  • Quality bedding made from natural silk of class A will serve its owner for many years without becoming less attractive.

In many stores you can see beautiful pillows that contain microsilk fiber. This material is man-made and consists of polyester and elastane. It is less durable and less durable.

Naperniki in high-quality pillows are either embroidered or equipped with zippers. These important elements that retain their filling are made from the following materials:

  • cotton;
  • polyester;
  • teak;
  • satin;
  • jacquard;
  • silk.

For a natural pillow, it is recommended to choose a pillow case made of a better and more environmentally friendly material.

How to choose for sleep?

  • If you want to purchase a really high quality pillow made of natural silk, then you should turn to trusted brands that have been producing such products for many years. This will avoid buying a substandard and fake product.
  • Pay attention to the label. The grade of silk should be written on it, and there is usually an indication of the presence of additional impurities, if any. Choose products with eco-friendly and natural covers. The most popular are satin or cotton products.
  • If you have doubts about the naturalness of materials, then their origin can be verified independently. It is enough just to raise the pillow. If it easily takes its original shape, then you have a product in which synthetics are present.
  • The quality of the silk filler can be checked easilyif the pillow has a zipper. Take a closer look at the shade of the fibers. The color of the high quality Mulberry silk is pearl and delicate beige, but not pure white. The surface of natural and elastic fibers will have a matte sheen. If you try to pull them off, you may notice that this is quite difficult to do. The fibers of inexpensive Tussa silk come off much easier.
  • You can pull one strand out of the pillow filling and set it on fire. It should give off the same odor as organic matter. During the burning process, your fingers will easily get dirty on the fallen embers. If the material is of an unnatural origin, then there will be no embers left of it, and it will burn instantly, and the smell will be completely different.

Don't forget that a genuine silk pillow won't be too cheap.

How to care?

Silk bedding requires special care. Ordinary washing can greatly harm such a thing or negatively affect it.

  • If you want a silk product to serve you as long as possible, then it must be protected with removable linen (pillowcases). Any covers should be washed from time to time.
  • Sometimes it is recommended to hang out bedding for several hours - for ventilation.
  • If there is a need to clean a natural silk pillow, then it must be sent to dry cleaning.
  • Inexpensive models, in which the silk content does not exceed 30%, can be washed in a regular washing machine - at home. To do this, you must select a delicate mode and use a soft powder. The water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees.
