Wood has always been present in human dwellings: from ancient times to our technological days. Houses, furniture, dishes and décor were all made of wood. Based on the thousand-year experience of our ancestors, modern craftsmen can create panels from any part of the plant, using all kinds of techniques and tools for work.

Advantages and disadvantages

The appearance of the wooden panel is unusual and attractive, this decor will not leave anyone indifferent. He has many advantages:

  • environmentally friendly and harmless material;
  • easy to process;
  • economical, since the panel can be made from literally everything: cuts, bars, boards and even shavings;
  • the products are diverse - a sculptural volume is easily created, carving or burning is used;
  • with proper care, such decor is durable and can delight several generations;
  • wooden products are beautiful and original, it is difficult to repeat them twice.

Unfortunately, wood also has disadvantages that you should be aware of before hanging the decor on the wall:

  • the wood used in the work must be dry, and the finished product must be treated with special compounds against fungus, mold and insects, otherwise the panel will be short-lived;
  • it is difficult to care for wooden decor, it does not like water and household chemicals, and dust clogging into a relief pattern is difficult to clean;
  • a panel made of natural material is not suitable for every interior.

What are they made of?

There are millions of trees on the planet, each with its own shade, pattern, texture, density. The wood with the highest density, deepest color and expressive pattern can be found in tropical rainforests. These breeds are called valuable, and they are very expensive. Even a small mosaic panel made of black pieces of grenadil, reddish fragments of ebony, pink clever, purple amaranth can be compared in cost to jewelry. The incredible scent comes from the decor made of sandalwood or agarwood (scarlet wood). Rosewood is estimated at 15 thousand dollars per kilogram, sandal - 20 thousand, bokot - 33 thousand.

The wood of temperate latitudes is not so expressive in color and pattern, does not have an iron density, the range of its shades is not too large. But it has a reasonable cost and is easy to handle. The softer the material, the easier it is to work with it, the more sophisticated the decor is. From domestic breeds, conifers are classified as soft and inexpensive varieties, pine is especially popular. Alder, willow, poplar, linden are easy to carve. Solid wood is more expensive, dense varieties include larch, oak, hornbeam, white acacia, Karelian birch, ash.

Sections of oak, maple, sycamore have a beautiful active pattern; they are often used to make panels. Beech, alder are endowed with a subtle texture and are suitable for creating the background of the picture.

Varieties

A wall panel can be produced in different ways: it is cut out of a solid log house, creating a volumetric relief composition, laid out from saw cuts, made up of branches. The work is often placed in a frame, equipped with lighting and hung on the wall. The panel can also decorate furniture facades: wardrobes, TV stands, headboards.

Carved

Wood carving is a decorative handicraft, popular all over the world and rooted in the distant past. Over a long historical period of time, the art of carving has developed many techniques.

  • Sculptural. The most complex and realistic type of carving that creates a 3D image of people, animals, objects. The picture is three-dimensional, as far as possible from the background. The sculptural carvings look incredibly impressive.
  • Embossed. The relief in the carving creates a kind of half-sculptures protruding forward above the base.
  • Flat-relief. Unlike relief carving, the background remains on the surface, and the pattern deepens into the layer of the tree.
  • High relief. This type of carving contains a clear geometry of lines and shapes used in the creation of an ornament.
  • Slotted (or openwork). The most extravagant type of carving. Performing the pattern, the master cuts through the canvas, creating a sophisticated lace ornament. The panels are light, airy, but also more fragile when compared with products of any other technique.

Carved works can be of a combined nature. For example, a panel cut in relief may well have an openwork edging.

From bars

The bars are used in the construction and furniture industry. They look like small logs, trimmed and processed from all sides. The panels are made from scraps of this material, which, in fact, cost nothing. It is easy to get them on the sawmill. To create paintings, fragments of the bars can be varnished, but sometimes they are painted, adding variety to the brown tone of the wood.

  • The panel is made in patchwork style from bars of different sizes, shades and varieties of trees.
  • The volumetric product is made up of colored fragments, each of which has an oblique cut.

From cuts (cuts)

If you remove the bark from the log and cut into even plates, you get cuts. To achieve a more natural effect, the cuts are made together with the bark. The master decides for himself which type of cuts to use for his product. Some trees have amazingly beautiful patterns, textures and cuts. The panels made from them are very attractive, they bring an atmosphere of natural warmth and comfort to the interior.

  • Combined panels from saw cuts, enclosed in frames.
  • An image of a cat made from cuts of various trees.

From planks

In the hands of a true master, an ordinary board becomes a work of art. The material is inexpensive and the work is amazing. You just need to choose a dry, even board, without knots and cracks. Such works are suitable for any direction of country and ethnicity.

  • Pay attention to how the color of the product is worked out. The master has achieved contrasting shades, while preserving the natural structure and pattern of the boards.
  • Simple and original work simulating a fingerprint on a rough plank surface. A good gift for a criminologist friend.

From rails of different lengths

Reiki is edged lumber, processed narrow boards. Masters paint them in different shades or leave them the way nature intended them. All kinds of patterns and patterns are made from slats of different lengths.

  • Panel for the head of the bed, made to order from slats of different types of trees.
  • Airy abstract decor from slats above the bed. One of the walls and the ceiling in the interior are also made of slats.

Compositions

The compositions have a semantic character and resemble real paintings made from wood materials.

  • Joshua Abarbanel's typesetting composition is made on the theme of floristry. It is made of many elements (of various shapes and colors), layered on top of each other. The panel looks voluminous and elegant at the same time.
  • The composition is composed of different types of natural materials, including moss and wood boards, chips, branches. Birch bark was selected as a background. The theme of the picture is a rural house in a picturesque corner of nature.

Design

Wood is versatile, it can be combined with any kind of material and suits almost all styles. The choice of theme largely depends on the location of the painting. For example, in a country house, the wall can be decorated with a panel "The wolf howls at the moon" or a cute plot on the theme of fishing; a food theme is suitable for the kitchen: fruits, tea set, and so on. Consider examples made to decorate different rooms.

Living room

The choice of panels in the living room depends on the style of the room. A romantic interior will need an openwork product, and an American country one will need a panel made of bars or cuts.

  • A "world map" made on a rough board will suit the direction of the loft.
  • The inscriptions on wooden plates, made in the form of panels, can be ordered for any room.
  • An openwork product on a pedestal adorns the hall, made in oriental style.

Bedroom

The theme of the bedroom decor should not only match the style of the room, but also have a positive effect on the owner's sleep.

  • The panel at the head of the bed, made in the form of a forest, immerses you in the world of nature, brings peace and tranquility. The wood looks thick, but not ponderous thanks to the through-carving technique.
  • An abstract backlit panel in the style of minimalism decorates the bedroom. Homogeneous wood of dark tones is conducive to peace and balance.

Kitchen

The kitchen theme is rich in plots: food pictures, sets, still lifes, drinks and ordinary logs, symbolizing the hearth.

  • A tea set lined up in a vertical line.
  • Beautiful sculptural carving in three dimensions.

Hallway

An interesting solution for the hallway is a wooden panel combined with a hanger.

How to choose?

The choice of wood panels depends on many factors:

  • the personal taste of the owner who prefers a certain type of plant;
  • belief in the horoscope of the Druids and the choice of wood according to the month of birth;
  • the location of the panel - in the hall, bedroom, children's room, you can use carved options; in the country or in the bathhouse - compositions from bars, boards, cuts;
  • the requirement of the interior style - openwork carving is suitable for the Gothic or imperial direction, loft and high-tech styles will need a rougher decor.

When choosing a panel, you should pay attention to the quality of the product. The product may have chips, dents, scratches, as it is made of pliable material.

Décor made from raw wood deforms over time. A shriveled product can crack.

How to care?

The wood panel should not be placed in the bathroom or in the kitchen near the stove and sink. Greasy stains will be difficult to wash. The main action in the care of the panel is the timely cleaning of dust. This will require a soft brush (broom). It is necessary to prevent dust from collecting and layering in the carved corners and crevices that make up the openwork carving. Over time, the work will have to be restored, the damaged elements cleaned off and re-varnished.

Beautiful examples in the interior

The beauty of wooden panels is natural and unique, you can see this by looking at examples of unique products:

  • St. Seraphim of Sarov on the stone;
  • based on the fairy tales of A.S. Pushkin;
  • laser cutting;
  • loft-style city;
  • the panel, symbolizing the sun, is made of branches.

Wood products carry positive energy, they are endowed with natural unusual beauty.
