Polished granite is used quite widely, and for many people it will be quite interesting to use and restore it with their own hands. Grinding and polishing of granite manually with "turtles" has its important features. You need to know how else to grind granite floors yourself at home.

Peculiarities

Polished granite is a material that is widely used for decoration purposes. But it should be understood that even this extremely stable and reliable stone does not always shine. It can lose its beautiful features due to unfavorable external conditions and too active exploitation. In addition, this process is accelerated by the lack of competent care. New grinding and polishing significantly extends the life of the stone, giving it a pleasant look again.

Granite itself is notable for its density and hardness, which makes it difficult to work with it. On the other hand, grinding and polishing allows you to remove not only surface blockages, but also deeply penetrating scratches. It should be noted that these procedures are not synonymous.

The polished stone takes on a matte appearance, it looks like a velvety material. But polishing gives the perfect gloss, which will reflect all the surrounding objects.

When polishing, the inner structure of the stone is not lost. It is also worth noting that the absence of any additional coatings or impregnations allows you to preserve the initial level of environmental friendliness. What is important, the temperature resistance is also preserved, as a result of which you can safely use polished structures in baths, saunas, near fireplaces and stoves. All impact takes place strictly on a mechanical level due to special grinding stones and water. You can even polish the entire surface of a large workpiece.

But designers often prefer to work with single edges (chamfers), which form a unique design effect. The technology of polishing both flat and curved granite surfaces has been developed. This technique is applicable to luxury plumbing and furniture products. The mirror effect of the surface is very valuable. Thanks to him, even confined rooms look somewhat large in volume, become more saturated in color.

Application

Polished stone is used for:

  • monolithic granite floors;

  • indoor and outdoor tiles;

  • getting steps on a staircase or porch;

  • decorating entrance groups;

  • paving sidewalks;

  • covering of pedestrian areas;

  • preparation of sports and leisure grounds.

This material is unpretentious to maintain. But nevertheless, it is used primarily where an external exquisite appearance is important. This applies to both indoor and outdoor work. However, it must be understood that when moisture gets in, a very smooth surface begins to slip strongly. Therefore, such a solution is hardly acceptable for facing all places where people pass at least from time to time.

But for walls, ceilings, facades and individual decorative elements, this material is ideal. There, such its property as the ability to almost not absorb water is beneficially revealed.

Granite structures are usually assembled using polymer or metal parts.

Compared to installation on glue or cement-sand mortar, this solution:

  • stronger;

  • more precisely by the location of the parts;

  • more attractive in terms of the possibility of dismantling structures.

In places with a large flow of people, polished granite can be worn out in 10-15 years. However, the texture and texture of the stone itself is uniform throughout its depth. Therefore, the new polishing will allow you to restore its appearance without the need to remove, transport and process somewhere in production. In bathrooms, toilets and combined bathrooms, granite has been effectively used for decades without being covered with lime deposits. Therefore, its relatively high price per year of operation is quite affordable.

Grinding instructions

Before you start grinding granite, it is worth preparing the necessary tools.

Tools and materials

You can even grind granite by hand. But this kind of work is very laborious. For her, usually use angle grinder disc holders. On uneven surfaces, rubber calipers are advised. Actually, the effect on the material is exerted by the so-called "turtles", or officially - diamond flexible grinding wheels.

Special polishing grains are applied on top of the base. The specific relief gave the common name to this instrument. Grinding wheels are marked from 30 to 3000. And in the reverse order. The larger the digit of the number, the smaller the unit particle. And also can be applied:

  • abrasive segments;

  • abrasive cups from 125 to 150 mm;

  • petal discs.

Carrying out works

Standard do-it-yourself polishing technology at home involves sanding first. You will have to work with a grinder with increased power, at least from 1.2 kW. The device is started in full force. There is no need to adjust the speed. Strong pressure is contraindicated, and it is not necessary - its own load from the grinder is sufficient.

Important: in the process of manual grinding of hard stone, a lot of small dust grains and larger particles are released. You can't do without glasses and a respirator. It is also advisable to wear tight clothes that will not be a pity.

Moving on to the actual polishing, it is necessary to use a medium-sized grinder with the option of adjusting the speed. The procedure can be done in the same way as marble is processed, and even discs are used in the same sample.

But they use more nozzles. So, marble usually ceases to be polished after processing with a nozzle with a grain of 800. And after such an impact, granite does not even begin to show a beautiful shine.

How to polish?

In some sources you can read about the chemical treatment of a granite surface. But this technique is relatively rare. It is expensive and slower. Sometimes you have to return to an already processed place. True, the quality of a well-executed chemical polishing is very high, and if necessary, the degree of gloss can be adjusted - which no machine is capable of.

Success is achieved, which is important, only with solid experience. In some cases, at the stage of preliminary polishing, it is necessary to remove chamfers from granite. This is the name of a medium-sized notch at the end of a stone blank. Simple chamfers are made along a radius or at an angle of 45 degrees. Curved grooves have edges with steps or non-standard radius fillets.

For mechanical processing, diamond powder is often used. Such an option as the Russian Brilliant is consumed in a volume of 1 kg per 40 m2. The product is suitable for both manual work and polishing machines.

Important: it is an easily flammable substance and should not get on rubber surfaces. Polishing to the final shine is done with a felt tool.

It is also helpful to find a good grade of aluminum oxide. In some manipulations, it is more effective than other substances. The difference between specific aluminum preparations is due solely to personal priorities and people's tastes. In principle, you can use what is most convenient for work.All the same, such compositions are positioned as a universal polishing agent.

To do, in general, everything is correct, after polishing, it is required to carry out finishing with the help of paste and a felt wheel; Along with the usual polishing paste, its diamond variety shows itself well.

Useful Tips

Professionals give the following recommendations:

  • if possible, use angle grinders Makita and other proven brands;

  • if the system does not allow water to be supplied, it is additionally sprayed with a spray bottle;

  • GOI paste, automotive enamels and other non-specialized products are not suitable;

  • it is advisable not to exceed the concentration of polishing powders, otherwise, instead of a mirror-like shine, only a surface saturated with their particles will turn out;

  • spraying a small portion of wax before starting work on the powder helps to reduce the amount of dust;

  • after completion of work, the stone should be thoroughly washed;

  • it is better to start mastering such a craft not even from an inconspicuous area, but from defective or spare material;

  • in some cases it is possible to polish granite with silicon dioxide;

  • cracked and loose stone is difficult to polish, it is better to knock down or change problem areas altogether.
