The material from polymethyl methacrylate is known to many as acrylic glass or plexiglass, which is obtained industrially. Its creator is the famous German scientist Otto Röhm, who worked on its appearance for many years. Let's consider in more detail the features of plexiglass products.

Advantages and disadvantages

Plexiglas can have several names: in some cases it is called acrylic, in others it is called transparent plastic. Its main component is thermoplastic resin. But in order to slightly improve the quality of the product and make it more durable and light-transmitting, other accompanying components are added to the structure of the plexiglass during manufacture. For this reason, Plexiglas products are distinguished by their lightness and strength. The scope of application is quite diverse. It can be used not only in the construction or industrial industry, but also in the furniture or private industry. To understand why the popularity of plexiglass is so huge, it is worth familiarizing yourself with some of its important features.

This material has more pluses than minuses. It is worth paying attention to the following advantages:

  • first of all, it is worth noting the small weight of this material; if we compare it with quartz glass, then acrylic is almost three times lighter than it; this is good for those who decide to make their own repairs and use plexiglass materials;
  • however, the main and main advantage of transparent plastic is its strength; such material is almost impossible to break, therefore it is most often used to make very fragile things, for example, aquariums or doors;
  • plexiglass products are easy to process; this material can take any desired shape;
  • organic glass is not afraid of the sun's rays, moisture, or exposure to harmful elements, therefore, products made of such material can be found in the bathroom and in the kitchen;
  • acrylic is not susceptible to ultraviolet rays, so finished products do not turn yellow in the sun and remain as strong;
  • transparent glass is considered the most environmentally friendly; even when heated, plexiglass does not emit absolutely any harmful substances;
  • if you follow all the storage rules, products from this material will be able to serve their owners for many years;
  • it is worth noting also the resistance of polymethyl methacrylate to very low and high temperatures.

In addition to a large number of advantages, organic glass still has some disadvantages, namely:

  • polymethyl methacrylate has a very weak resistance to mechanical scratches;
  • organic glass does not have protection against fire, therefore, all products made from such material should be kept as far as possible from any of the sources of fire; if this is not done, then it can even lead to the destruction of the object;
  • Plexiglas products require special care.

Variety of products

Products made from organic glass are different. Using such material, you can make any fantasy come true. Almost everything can be made of plexiglass, for example:

Plexiglas is usually used to protect spectators in stadiums or ice rinks. Looking out the airplane window, it is difficult to guess that it is made of this material.

In addition, in bombers, bays are most often made of acrylic.

Selection Tips

Having decided to buy an item made of plexiglass, you should pay attention to the following factors:

  • product texture - it depends on what kind of lighting in the house, diffused or ordinary, it depends on what kind of glass should be: matte or transparent;
  • finished product thickness - it depends on the expected load on the object, as well as on the conditions of its use.

Important! If minor damage or bubbles are noticed on the thing, then it is best to refuse to buy it.

Care rules

In order for the purchased items from organic glass to serve their owners as long as possible, you need to know how to properly care for them.

  • The best Plexiglas cleaner is Novus No. 1 or Brillianize. But those products that include such an element as ammonia or denatured alcohol, as well as acetone or carbon, should not be taken. Indeed, after using them, the product may become covered with small cracks. In addition, ordinary soap solution will perfectly cope with small dirt.
  • Initially, it is necessary to remove all dirt that is on the surface of the product. After that, the selected agent must be applied to the surface using a microfiber or cellulose sponge. After that, everything must be washed off with plain clean water. So that no streaks remain on the plexiglass product, it must be wiped dry with a suede napkin.
  • If small scratches appear on the item, you can remove them with a product such as car polish or wax. It must be spread evenly over the entire surface, and then wiped with a slightly moistened clean cloth.
  • If a plexiglass product begins to fade, then this can be eliminated by grinding its surface with fine sandpaper. Next, you need to treat the entire surface with a special polish for plastic.
  • If the cracks on the glass are spreading rapidly, there is only one way to prevent them from enlarging. It is necessary to drill a small hole up to 3 millimeters at the end of each of the cracks. After that, the hole must be filled with silicone sealant.

Important! If the listed methods have not led to success, you should seek help from specialists who can restore the original shine and beauty of the product.

In addition, you should not allow the organic glass object to fall, because from this it can become covered with small cracks.
