Currently, the market of finishing materials is replete with a variety of wallpapers. The stores sell not only classic canvases of delicate and pleasant colors or popular striped options, but also original copies of a dark color, which not every consumer decides to purchase.

Such caution is explained by the fact that most owners of apartments and private houses are confident that the dark finish will make their home gloomy and depressing. In fact, with the right approach, wallpapers of this color can transform the interior and make it truly luxurious.

Advantages and disadvantages

A dark finish is not always “oppressive” and hard on the perception. In many interiors, such a design solution looks not just organic, but truly gorgeous! The main thing is to take a responsible attitude to the selection of paintings and the arrangement of interior items.

Like any other finishing material, dark wallpapers have their pros and cons.

Advantages:

  • Dark wallpaper can not be glued to all wall surfaces, but can be used as an accent piece of the interior. This solution looks especially harmonious if the ensemble is made in too light and even "eye-catching" colors. For example, against a snow-white background, an insert from a wallpaper of a darker shade will seem to be a real lifeline, diluting the excessive whiteness.
  • Also, such finishing materials are often used in rooms on the sunny side. Using these canvases, you can slightly neutralize the intrusive natural light that often presses on your eyes during the day.
  • If you take a responsible approach to the selection and pasting of dark canvases, you can visually change the structure of the room. For example, make it more spacious or, conversely, slightly reduce it. Of course, enlarging a room with dark wallpaper is a little more difficult. But for this you can turn to experienced designers.
  • Dark canvases can hide many defects and unevenness of the walls. This is especially true for spectacular textured options or wallpapers with small prints.
  • It should be noted the versatility of such a finish. Dark wallpapers look great in many styles, from sophisticated classics to artsy and pompous baroque. This means that it will be possible to choose the best option for almost any ensemble.

Such wall decoration has its drawbacks:

  • It is not recommended to glue dark wallpapers in too small rooms, as they can visually make them even tighter. If you nevertheless decide to paste over the walls in a compact room with such canvases, then stock up on various decorative elements such as mirrors in order to visually expand the space. This technique does not always work, since much depends on the immediate layout of the room.
  • Designers strongly advise against turning to such a finish if the room is not located on the sunny side. Such a design can lead to the interior being too gloomy and lifeless.
  • On darker canvases, especially when it comes to paper versions, any damage will be more noticeable. First of all, this concerns the torn sections. Of course, you can never face such a problem if you choose better and denser materials and treat them with care.

Various types of wallpaper are sold in stores today.Let's consider them in more detail:

  • Paper. Such options are the cheapest and most environmentally friendly, since they contain 100% cellulose. It is quite simple to glue them, and the choice of shades of such canvases is incredibly rich. However, these options do not last long, they tear easily and cannot be washed.
  • Non-woven. In fact, these are the same paper copies, but they have a denser base with woven fibers. Thanks to this composition, non-woven finishing materials are reliable and durable. In addition, they are perfectly breathable, so mold or mildew will never appear on them. Some varieties of such wallpapers allow you to hide wall defects.
  • Vinyl. This is the name of wallpaper that has a special coating of foamed vinyl applied to a paper base or a special non-woven base. Such canvases can be washed, so they are bought for a wide variety of premises. These finishes are also durable and dense, so they can mask wall imperfections. In addition, vinyl options last a long time and do not lose their attractive appearance even after many years.
  • Acrylic. These types of wallpaper are similar in many ways to vinyl, but they use acrylic spraying for the top coat. These materials are thin, but breathable (unlike vinyl copies), so they can be used in a children's room or bedroom.
  • Fiberglass. Such canvases for painting are extremely popular today. They appeared relatively recently, but have already won the appreciation of consumers. Such wallpapers serve for a very long time and are highly durable. They are not afraid of mechanical damage. Unfortunately, such canvases are presented in monotonous options, and the choice of patterns on them is very limited.
  • Textile. These expensive but very beautiful wallpapers have a non-woven or paper backing to which a woven covering is applied. As a rule, cotton, linen and even silk are used in the production of these products. All materials are anti-flammable. These wallpapers look truly luxurious, however, gluing and washing them is not the easiest thing to do.

Colors and patterns

Let's take a look at the main spectrum of attractive dark tones:

  • Black. It will be perfectly combined with light details in the interior, emphasizing the elegance of the ensemble. A combination of black with pink, beige and milky tones would be ideal.
  • Brown. This color is rich in shades. Wallpaper of this color can be used both for pasting all walls, and for highlighting the accent zone. In such interiors, pieces of furniture of natural colors look best.
  • Red. This passionate color is one of the most energetic. In dark colors, it should be used carefully. It is advisable to combine dark red wallpaper with contrasting white or beige fabrics.
  • Dark olive. These options should be addressed by lovers of nature. They are suitable for both eco-style and classics.
  • Blue. Wallpapers in a dark blue shade will require high-quality lighting from you. Most often they are used to decorate bedrooms with south-facing windows.

Dark wallpapers are not only monochromatic. Such spectacular canvases are often complemented by beautiful prints and interesting patterns.

For example, it can be:

  • compositions with large flowers in contrasting colors and prints in which there is a small flower;
  • correct and abstract shapes and lines;
  • abstraction;
  • interesting images with monograms;
  • natural landscapes: mountains, forest thickets or starry sky;
  • classic images in a cage;
  • good old strip;
  • gold processing.

Textures and materials

The following materials are used in the production of modern wallpaper of any color:

  • cellulose;
  • non-woven fabric;
  • vinyl;
  • acrylic;
  • fiberglass;
  • the cloth;
  • metal.

Wallpaper textures can be very different.

For example, today textured relief canvases are especially popular, with the help of which you can easily hide wall defects. True, such models are more expensive than, for example, smooth products. Also on the market you can find attractive specimens with three-dimensional images, 3D compositions, gloss and effective embossing.

Combination rules

Dark wallpapers should look perfect in the interior, and for this they should be correctly combined with other surfaces and interior items.

The darker the room is, the lighter the furniture should be.

So, dense black canvases will look great in combination with snow-white objects. Also, for such ensembles, you need to select light curtains. These can be white, pale peach, beige, cream, or milky options.

As for the finishing of the ceiling and floor, it is recommended to make it using light-colored materials. For example, it can be soft brown, ash or beige laminate. Moreover, its surface can be either matte or glossy. In addition, the black accent areas will contrast beautifully with the white wallpaper in the interior. Such bright solutions are most often used in more modern interiors.

Indoor doors and moldings should also not blend in with dark wallpaper. They can be either light or a couple of tones different from the wall finish.

Combined options also look spectacular and attractive. For example, they can have a bright floral print on top, and a dark solid color half on the bottom. Such vertical canvases are used in many ensembles and look very lively and fresh. In addition, wallpaper can combine several different textures.

Such options are ideal for lovers of bold design solutions.

Styles

Dark wallpapers look organic in many stylistic directions. For example:

  • Canvases in the "garage" loft style can be plain or supplemented with imitation of brick and stone. The most successful options will be dark gray, brown, black or dull ash shades.
  • For minimalism style uncomplicated monochromatic wallpapers of strict and seasoned colors will become the most suitable. They can be dark gray, black, dark blue, or dark red.

In a minimalistic ensemble, you should not use dark canvases with bright prints or patterned compositions.

  • Hi-tech style you can also use similar shades. In such interiors, fiberglass and metallized options will be appropriate.
  • In luxurious and elegant ensembles of pretentious orientation (baroque, rococo, empire) canvases of burgundy, dark purple, black and dark blue will look great. They can be either plain or decorated with luxurious prints and gilding.

How to choose?

The selection of dark wallpapers must be approached as seriously and responsibly as possible so that the interior with such finishing materials looks beautiful, and not gloomy:

  • Remember that in a small room, too dark wallpapers (especially if they are glued on all walls) will not look very harmonious, as they will constrain the space. You can avoid this effect only by turning to large wall mirrors or sliding wardrobes with mirrored doors. Such details can visually expand the space.
  • In large rooms, dark wallpapers will look more spectacular, but they need to be played up correctly and the appropriate decor and light furniture should be added to the ensemble, so that the result is a “lively” and hospitable interior.
  • Stick dark wallpaper on only one wall in a bright room. Such interiors look interesting, harmonious and do not seem gloomy at all.
  • Don't forget about lighting. For rooms with dark wallpaper, you should carefully select devices that will qualitatively illuminate the space.
  • If you are looking for really cool and high-quality canvases, then choose durable and reliable vinyl, non-woven, acrylic and fiberglass models. Paper wallpapers are more suitable for rooms with low traffic, as they tear easily. Textile options are not recommended to be glued in the kitchen or hallway, as they quickly get dirty and absorb foreign odors.
  • Do not forget about the basic style of the interior. In it, all elements (including wall decoration) must overlap with each other and harmoniously combine in a single combination.

Beautiful ideas in the interior

Dark wallpapers can also be selected for the hall. For example, it can be textured black canvases with large gilded plant prints. Such wall decoration can be played up with a golden-amber tiled floor and a soft peach stretch ceiling with built-in lamps.

Dark gray wallpaper with black patterns can be used to decorate the wall opposite gray sofas and hang a TV on it. Trim the floor and ceiling in white, hang translucent curtains on the windows and place snow-white floor lamps near the sofas.

In an unusual room with dark walls, brown floors and dark furniture, light details need to be placed: marbled floor carpet, large white paintings with black frames, a triangular white chandelier, decorative monochrome pillows and vases / dishes made of shining crystal. These details are necessary to dilute the dark notes in the design.
