You bought a house or decided to renovate, and for wall decoration the choice fell on the traditional option for our country - wallpapering. Monochromatic wallpapers, with all their diversity, will help to embody the most daring ideas. You just need to figure out how to choose the most worthy option.

If you want to buy not just beautiful wallpaper for the walls, but also a high-quality, durable product, then you should understand the classification of wallpaper:

  • By the type of surface, they can be divided into two groups: smooth and textured (with embossing, small cut pattern, pasted pattern or any other relief).
  • By the number of layers - single-layer and multi-layer.
  • According to the degree of gloss - matte and glossy. Gloss can be negligible or highly reflective.
  • By the density of canvases: light with a density of less than 110 g / m2 (most often single-layer), medium (110-140 g / m2) and heavy with a weight of more than 140 g per 1 m2 (thick multilayer).
  • According to moisture resistance, wallpaper is divided into:
    • ordinary, not tolerant of contact with moisture;
    • moisture resistant with a special moisture protective layer. They can be wiped clean with a damp cloth;
    • washable, cleanable with various cleaning solutions. Also stand out super-washable wallpapers, which can be treated even with powders with abrasive particles and brushes.

Material

It depends on the material how the wallpaper will stick, hold, look over time:

  • Paper wallpaper are the most budgetary of those presented in stores. Moreover, they have a huge selection of colors and shades, they even meet with a relief surface. There are two types: simplex (single layer) and duplex (double layer)
  • Non-woven wallpaper... They are made on the basis of non-woven material with natural or synthetic fibers - interlining. The lower the density of such wallpapers, the more they stretch. This is an important aspect when carrying out repairs.
  • Vinyl wallpapers are made by applying foamed vinyl on a paper or non-woven base. There are products that are both smooth and with large embossing. Decorations with large ornaments will look good in the hall of a country house with a high ceiling.
  • Fabric wallpaper are obtained by applying a layer of fabric to a layer of paper or non-woven fabric. Due to the use of different types of fabrics, such as silk, viscose, linen, cotton and others, they can have a smooth, embossed and silky structure.
  • Technique for creating acrylic wallpaper similar to vinyl. Acrylic is applied only to the paper or non-woven layer. But it cannot cover the entire surface of the base, so the texture of the wallpaper is only embossed.
  • The world's most popular liquid wallpaper are just starting their way in the market of our country. It is a mixture of glue and various fibers with additives, which must be applied to the walls with a spatula.
  • Glass fiber are created by interweaving fiberglass in the form of different ornaments. They are very durable, so it is beneficial to use them in new homes: when shrinking, you can not be afraid of cracks and tears on such material. To obtain different shades, they are covered with paint.
  • Wallpaper from natural materials... In their manufacture, cork veneer, bamboo or metal foil with various patterns are used.

Dimensions (edit)

In Russian stores, wallpapers with a width of two sizes are presented:

  • half-meter (mostly cheaper wallpapers are in this category).Their width is 53 cm with slight deviations;
  • meter (it is faster to glue them on the wall).

The length of wallpaper in a roll is customary for a Russian buyer - 10 meters.

Sizes differ depending on the material. Paper wallpapers are standard half-meter and meter-long, in a roll of ten meters. Non-woven fabrics have roll lengths up to 25 meters. Acrylic and vinyl wallpapers are made in widths and 70 cm with a standard ten-meter length.

Fabrics start with a width of 70 cm due to the peculiarities of manufacturing.

And when buying expensive fabric wallpaper, you will be counted not by rolls, but by running meters.

Colors

Light shades are considered optimal: white, beige, gray. It is easier to work with them for a novice amateur designer, while a professional interior designer has unlimited imagination in this case. But don't be afraid to use colored wallpapers. It's just worth a little deeper to explore the beneficial combinations of shades:

  • Yellow gives a feeling of joy, symbolizes energy and intelligence. Suitable for decorating a kitchen, an office for extraordinary personalities.
  • Shades of blue decorate the bedroom. It is a peaceful color and is also perfect for a nautical theme. But do not get carried away with the dark blue variations - they can add gloom.
  • Pink, delicate peach, sand wallpapers are the most versatile and give a feeling of space, comfort and warmth.
  • Olive, purple, red gold - many are afraid to use such complex shades. But you just need to find the right combination.
  • Olive color gloomy for a nursery, and in a living room or bedroom, in combination with green, beige or pale blue, it can look very fresh and fashionable.

Varieties of red, orange, gold should not be used on all walls, just one accent will give a unique character to your home.

Style

Monochrome wallpapers are great for interior decoration, designed in different styles:

  • Wallpaper in the Scandinavian style, as a rule, in light shades, without a pronounced ornament, it is possible to use natural materials.
  • In the classics, light shades with gilding, shine, tints are preferred.
  • Decor in the style of Eastern countries - brighter and more monochromatic walls can be combined with trimmings with textured floral designs (for example, Turkish cucumbers).
  • The Baroque and Rococo styles are similar to each other, but the Rococo shades are more delicate. In a classic or palace theme, it is better to decorate large rooms.
  • Modern style involves plain wallpaper in cold shades for bedrooms, and warm and rich colors in living rooms and halls. The texture can be under the skin, suede and even plaster. Eco-style is gaining popularity, where natural materials will be appropriate. In the loft theme, paintable or liquid wallpapers that imitate metal, concrete, as well as brick and stone are applicable.

Decor

Decorating a room with wallpaper carries not only a decorating function, but can also help hide flaws. If there are irregularities and cracks on the walls, you can hide this by highlighting an even wall with a bright contrasting color or combining matte textures with glossy ones.

Vertical solid stripes in contrasting colors, such as gray and pink, will look very impressive in the living room, creating dynamics and mood. You can also vertically combine plain and patterned wallpapers, working in a classic style or imitating a palace interior.

Horizontal combination also involves decorating plain wallpaper with borders. A darker finish with a bold pattern on the bottom can be separated from a solid light shade of the same color on the top. The room will not appear squat. Or, on the contrary: a dark monochromatic bottom and a small, pleasant to the eye, plant ornament on top.

Plaster decor will well emphasize bright wallpaper. And the texture with deep color embossing will decorate a niche in a room with light uniform walls.

Design

Designers have their own tricks for each room. The bedroom should be comfortable, conducive to relaxation and tranquility.Pastel shades without a pattern prevail here. If you nevertheless decide to highlight one of the walls with color or texture, then the entire interior should be expressed in calm colors.

There is a lot of movement, conversation, activities in the living room. Therefore, you can add brightness to the interior or zone the room using calm and rich colors in combination.

Texture plays an important role here too. Small kitchens require pastel shades. Corridors are usually decorated in light colors. For children, calm green shades and unobtrusive textures are ideal.

How to choose?

Let's formulate the rules for choosing wallpaper:

  • Decide on the purpose of the purchased product. For rooms with low ceilings, light colors, embossing with vertical lines and medium-sized ornaments are suitable. A non-woven coating is suitable for the living room, vinyl for the corridor and kitchen, and for the nursery mostly made of paper or natural materials.
  • If there is a relief pattern, then fitting will be required. And the number of wallpapers should be increased.
  • Pay attention to the size of the rolls.
  • There are specialized adhesives for different materials. An incorrectly selected composition can ruin the entire repair. Also, the methods of applying the glue are different. For paper, glue is applied to the wallpaper, and for non-woven fabric, to the wall.
  • The density of the wallpaper must be at least 110 g / m2. Otherwise it is very easy to break them.
  • At the time of purchase, it is necessary to check all rolls by color. It must be identical. Because in different batches, the manufacturer may supply slightly different shades.
  • For areas located on the sunny side, it is better to choose a slightly fading wallpaper.

Advantages and disadvantages

Paper wallpapers are budgetary, environmentally friendly (well suited for a nursery), easy to stick, but not washed and fade badly. Waterproof wallpaper is easy to clean, but does not allow air to pass through (it is better not to use them in bedrooms). Fabric wallpapers are expensive and difficult to use, although they are very effective in the interior.

Flizelin is not cheap, but it keeps its shape perfectly, breathes and serves for many years. Vinyl wallpaper is easy to clean, but difficult to glue. The liquid coating is environmentally friendly and easy to apply, although the choice of colors is limited. Wallpaper made from natural materials is sensitive to moisture and difficult to maintain.
