The main idea of the rustic stylistic direction is a successful combination of minimally processed natural materials with the latest technical progress. The rustic interior is trying by all possible means to express its "wildness", intact, and this harmony has a calming effect on a person. What is the beauty, and what are the features of such interiors, we will analyze in more detail.

What it is?

First, a little about the style itself and its origins. According to various sources, the word "rustic" has Latin or French roots and means "rural", "simple". Having different origins, the concept in different languages has the same meaning.

And now a little history. Even in ancient Rome, in residential buildings, the floor and walls were protected by facing with stone, and the ceiling was reinforced with wooden beams. Over time, these details have made their way to other countries such as France, Italy and Russia. There they fell in love, but not at all because of their simplicity - it just became fashionable. According to another version, the rustic style of home decoration came to us from America, however, this is only a hypothesis - the American rural style has always been called country. Rustic has taken root in Europe, it has become extremely popular in the Scandinavian countries.

The spread and popularity of rustic interiors gained in opposition to the modern style trends that appeared along with the development of industry, such as minimalism, hi-tech and loft. Not everyone liked metal surfaces, concrete walls, brickwork that gave off cold, shiny gloss. Many wanted to return to their origins, to natural materials, and the environment, close to nature, was more suitable for relaxation, which is so typical for rustic.

From this design, it blows home and warmth. In addition, organic raw materials used for decoration are safe for humans, and wood decor exudes a light unobtrusive aroma and has a good effect on the body.

The rustic interior is based on a rough modification of the rural style. This style is very brutal, but at the same time calm and confident. It is this feeling of confidence that is the reason for his immense popularity.

A room decorated in a rustic spirit may at first resemble a primeval cave or a hut abandoned in the mountains.

However, a closer look reveals that this space is quite comfortable - it is very suitable for a pleasant pastime.

Materials and finishes

In order for the design to match the rustic style, when creating it, you need to use only natural materials: wood, stone, metal.

For this reason this stylistic direction fits exactly into the arrangement of a country or country house. However, a rustic setting can also be recreated in a separate apartment or room. In such cases, many people change the rough ceiling beams made of wood for options from an aged solid wood. And the walls and floor are finished with stone tiles instead of natural stone.

But the main material for the embodiment of the rustic stylistic trend is, of course, wood. Wood that has dried up under the winds of many years is present in everything: both in decoration and in the manufacture of furniture. In this case, it is imperative that the wood is almost untreated with all knots and cracks.

The artificially aged material actively emphasizes the rustic direction. Wood, as a rule, is not sanded or varnished, trying to preserve its original beauty.

The woody component is almost everywhere:

  • massive ceiling beams;
  • frames on windows, doors;
  • wall cladding made of logs, boards;
  • floor covering - both wooden materials and their imitation;
  • furniture is also desirable from solid wood;
  • the stairs between the floors of a private house are usually wooden.

The woody component often gets along with natural stone. The same requirements apply to it. These should not be smooth, expensive and shiny slabs of marble or granite, but simple sandstone, quartz, slate, and almost without processing. It is also important here to preserve the naturalness of shapes and textures.

This material is used to cover the walls, decorate the fireplace, and place it on the floor.

As such, rustic masonry is not common, but when used, it should give the impression of being old, not very neat, but reliable. Most often, it is used to build a fireplace, which is the central, key detail of a rustic room. Here it resembles an old stove that was used to heat the house and cook food. A rustic fireplace has its own characteristics that are different from medieval and modern modifications.

In rusticism, a fireplace is, first of all, a hearth, it must fulfill the most practical function. At the same time, both stone and brick are used to create a hearth. The presence of a massive mantelpiece is a must.

It is difficult to do absolutely without metal when decorating any interior. In the rustic style, there are no shiny surfaces at all, more often it is bronze, brass, as a rule, it is decorated with a patina effect. You can also find black iron, forging looks organic. All fasteners, furniture fittings, chandeliers, candlesticks are made of metal. Although metal does not play a key role here, it is actively used to create interesting furniture elements, for example, a headboard for a wooden bed, a leg under a floor lamp, and the base of a tabletop.

Furniture selection

When forming a rustic stylistic direction in the interior, the most difficult task, perhaps, will be the acquisition of furniture. After all, it must be underlined rough, simple, wooden, soundly made. This is either an array with a pronounced texture, or logs.

In simple stores, such models are quite difficult to find.

It is impossible to imagine a rustic interior without:

  • a massive table for dining with the whole family;
  • rough stools;
  • high-backed chairs;
  • benches;
  • open shelves;
  • wicker chairs;
  • log framing of all upholstered furniture, beds;
  • original furnishings from large tree trunks;
  • antique massive chests and dressers.

All upholstered furniture is upholstered with natural-based fabrics, without synthetic inclusions. Given that the furniture is predominantly wooden, it is possible to use a moderate amount of carving.

Color palette

A rustic interior should not be full of bright flashy colors. For the village direction, tones are more calm, moderate brightness, without much variegation, close to nature: woody, shades of sand, grass, clay, stony gray.

As already stated, the rustic direction gives a special place to wood - not only its color, but also its shape and texture are taken into account. The style does not accept painting, varnishing - natural decorativeness is important. The color palette of wood is different - from wenge to light oak.

The main colors of the stylistics will be pastel, sand, beige, brown, cream, marsh, gray, green shades, which can successfully harmonize with pale red, as well as pale yellow accents.

As for the combinations, often dark furniture acts as the basis for light textiles: pillows, covers, bedspreads, curtains.

Textiles and decor

The rustic style is considered a masculine version of the decor. At the same time, soft feminine details soften the atmosphere without getting lost against its background. Here you can combine the details of antiquity, restored, brought in a divine form, with modern things. For example, a completely imperfect-looking uncouth table can effectively harmonize with elegant dishes... The wooden dresser might have a great porcelain vase filled with flowers.

The textile rustic component is not too large. It is bounded by window curtains, pillows, bedspreads, and mats and homespun rugs placed on the wooden floor. The main thing here is the natural composition and natural colors: linen, canvas, jute, wool. In a male rustic interior, animal skins will look harmonious.

As for the rustic decor, absolutely everything that nature is rich in can create the necessary atmosphere: branches, driftwood, roots and bark of trees, as well as saw cuts, rough hewn stones, dried flowers, old boards, moss, various strings, burlap, cotton and chintz, kraft paper.

They will also support the authenticity of the style:

  • ceramic dishes, as well as wooden;
  • handmade;
  • mirrors framed with patinated board;
  • forged central chandelier, sconces and lamps from various natural and scrap materials.

Today's technical devices should be masked behind different surfaces in order to preserve the original harmony. The introduction of objects into various decorative forms is relevant: the TV turns into a picture, and the refrigerator with an oven turns into a wooden cabinet.

The rustic simplicity of the rustic direction should be present in all, even the smallest details. The blinds do not at all fit into the style of rusticism, therefore, a rough wooden cornice must be fixed above the window, on which rather dense curtains of a dark shade made of natural fabric will be held without the slightest hint of a print.

Various crafts from saw cuts, branches: hangers, chandeliers, shelves will actively complement the rustic direction. The floor will naturally be covered with a dull carpet, natural carpet without a pattern, or skin.

Decoration of different rooms

The rustic style is both modest and unassuming, and not devoid of chic. With its help, you can create a cozy atmosphere of harmony and peace. It is versatile and therefore suitable for the design of any room in the home. Rustic will look appropriate in the interior of an apartment and a country house. Its simple design without a lot of bright details will never get bored.

Interior design projects for rooms of different purposes include a number of ideas, which we will consider in more detail.

Hallway

Rough but functional rustic style is perfect for decorating hallways.

  • For walls, sheathing from boards is suitable, the ceiling can be sheathed with wood of a warmer tone. An entrance hall is a room with a large traffic; the floors are best made of stone.
  • A massive entrance door with a forged handle will look harmonious.
  • The furniture in the hallway is represented by a massive wooden chest of drawers, over which a mirror with a wooden frame will look great. A floor hanger will become an important attribute of style, as it can look like tree branches.
  • Old tools of blacksmiths and carpenters can serve as decor.
  • A hallway in the absence of natural light should contain several light sources. The ceiling light is complemented by several wall lamps with light shades.

Living room

The style of rusticism is revealed to the maximum in a spacious living room, while massive furniture items, so characteristic of the direction, will not take up free space.

  • The walls in the hall are sheathed with wood. The corners are accentuated by unpolished timber without lacquer finish. In this case, one wall, where the fireplace will be located, is better to revet with a stone.As for the ceiling, it is made with wooden beams.
  • Wide plank floors should be sanded or varnished for safety. Modern technology is hidden behind furniture doors.
  • We leave ceramics and porcelain vases on the surface.
  • Various upholstered furniture is located on a solid base of wood or wrought iron. Upholstery in natural woven fabric. The back of the chair will be authentically decorated with the skin of an animal; it can also be laid on the floor. And also the living room can be decorated with floor homespun walkways.
  • To soften some rudenessa lot of pillows can be scattered, but they should be without some dainty decor.
  • The room will be illuminated by a massive chandelier, wood or wrought iron, located in the center. A round chandelier can be hung on a chain, and the lamps on it will be an imitation of candles.

Bedrooms

Any bedroom is supposed to rest. That is why the rustic dormitory is decorated with light wood: the walls are made of a board of warm colors, the ceiling is also light, decorated with beams, but the board floor is much darker than the ceiling with walls.

  • The central object in the interior of the bedroom should be a bed on a log base. The headboard is made of logs or forged. Metal non-shiny figures of forest dwellers can serve as decor. Luminaires are also made of dark metal.
  • An important part of the bedroom is the dressing room. If it is not possible to equip a dressing room separately, things can be folded into a massive wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a bedside table, made of wood with dark metal inserts.
  • A soft skin or natural fluffy carpet will look great on the floor. At the same time, the carpet can be in harmony with the curtains and be in one color, for example, a moderate red hue.
  • The room is illuminated by a chandelier, as well as bedside lamps decorated with lampshades in pastel colors. The base of the chandelier can be a tree, the matte shade is decorated with imitation of tree branches.

Kitchens

It is quite possible to make a rustic kitchen in an ordinary apartment functional and fit into style. All plastic elements should be replaced with metal, for example, in household appliances.

  • First of all, such a kitchen should not be overloaded with small and decorative details. It simply has to be simple and concise. Traditionally, the surfaces of the walls and ceiling are sheathed with wood materials, and the floors are more practical than stone ones - they are more resistant to abrasion, high humidity, and moreover, they are more durable. In this case, it will be useful to decorate the wall next to the sink with stone or porcelain stoneware.
  • A massive set with an expressive facade made of wood with an emphasized aged texture will look appropriate in a rustic kitchen.
  • As for kitchen furniture, a dining table with chairs is also better made from solid wood.
  • It will be good and practical if the recess above the slab is faced with a stone, imitating a stove. This will hide the hood. Other household appliances are disguised behind wooden furniture doors.
  • The dishes are used not only for eating, but also act as a spectacular decor.
  • In the dining area, homespun paths can be placed on the floor.
  • The chandelier can be the same as in the living room - candle shades are located on a round metal or wooden base, and it itself is attached with chains to the ceiling beam.

Bathroom

When decorating a bathroom in a rustic style, take into account the high humidity in the room. All wooden finishing parts are pre-treated with protective compounds against moisture.

  • To the maximum, stone is used in this room, wall and floor surfaces are finished with it, while it is better to choose light colors.
  • For the modern embodiment of rustic interiors, ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware are used, stylized as aged stone. At the same time, porcelain stoneware is made without coating with glaze or decorative enamel, so the original unevenness of the surface is preserved.
  • Characteristic features are naturally aged or artificially aged surfaces with a natural texture, as well as a warm range in brown-gray tones.
  • Walls that will not come into contact with water can be finished with impregnated wood.
  • The space at the sink needs to be tiled with stone, porcelain stoneware tiles. Candles and ceramic vases serve as decor.
  • The bathroom is illuminated by a ceiling lamp, covered with frosted glass and decorated with tree branches. Two lamps of the same design are located on opposite sides of the mirror.
