Before characterizing the peculiarities of the art deco (art deco) style in the interior of apartments, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of its appearance and the nuances of the decoration of various rooms. An important role is played by the color palette, and the design of ceiling lamps, and decor for the hallway and other rooms. Having dealt with these subtleties, you can confidently answer the question of what it is - art deco, what decorative elements and other features are characteristic of it, and how to choose the right solution,

What it is?

First, you need to figure out how to correctly say and write the name of this design style - Art Deco or Art Deco. From a linguistic point of view, the first option is much more accurate. The fact is that this term is borrowed from the French language. Therefore, it will be more correct to be guided by the norms of French pronunciation. The main characteristic by which Art Deco is recognized is the combination of bohemianism and pretentiousness.

At the same time, the important point is that it is unusual for this style to abandon the achievements of progress. One clarification - this does not mean modern achievements, but only those that were in the first half of the last century.

Other characteristic features of Art Deco are:

  • active use of geometric patterns;

  • natural wood furniture;

  • a large number of mirrors;

  • two-level ceilings;

  • the use of contrasting tones and their shades;

  • the use of heavy and pointedly expensive-looking textiles;

  • placement of lamps at every step.

Another feature of the style is excellent compatibility with glass and aluminum surfaces. It is perfectly possible to use chrome-plated stainless steel. These materials create the optimal color characteristic of the industrial era. Another important point is the definition of those parameters that clearly separate Art Deco from Art Nouveau. The main point for which people love this style is that all materials should be with an expensive texture, but without pathos and pretentiousness.

Black tones are welcome - there should be a lot of them. Maximum rounding of corners is recommended. Patterns should be built according to strict geometric requirements. Ideas of technological progress are often expressed in images of fast-moving trains and aircraft.

It is also worth noting that although the style originated in France, it acquired its logical conclusion in American cities. Now it is by the image that has arisen there that they judge this style.

History of origin

This is a rare case when not only a specific period of the formation of stylistics is known, but also a specific event to which it was tied. We are talking about the Paris World's Fair in 1925, held in Paris. It was there that the first examples of Art Deco were presented, which already possessed all its basic features. Of course, 1925 was only the culmination, and the mood of shock caused by the world war and subsequent revolutionary events in different countries played a role in the formation of stylistics. And it is quite understandable that it was only when the shock receded that an appropriate reaction became possible.

In the United States of the "prosperity" period, many thought that now prosperity has come forever, there will never be any more problems. The difference from the avant-garde was striking.Now the program of "creating a new aesthetics" or any other large-scale task was not put forward. All these sentiments, abundantly circulating in a certain part of society, were fully embodied in the Art Deco style.

Today it is known that such ideas turned out to be incorrect, but the design approach has resisted. It survived even in the flames of World War II, or rather, it was revived after it on a new basis in the process of post-war reconstruction.

Art Deco focuses on the fact that "you have to live here and now", purely on sensuality and external attraction. He cannot be divorced from his time, therefore it is impossible to transfer such an approach to our days. But you can make a thorough adaptation or alteration to modern realities. In order to reproduce the specific spirit of the style as accurately as possible, it is necessary to return to the specifics of the worldview of that period. It did not contain any particular negative emotions, since the upheavals of recent times were simply ousted from consciousness, including by design means.

The first third of the last century was accompanied by the rapid development of technology, industry, communications and communications. Communication between different countries became much easier. There was a feeling that one could not follow tradition, but create an environment around oneself individually. They tried to bring decorativeness to the maximum, to demonstrate their superiority and subtle knowledge of the environment.

Art Deco home decor is inevitably eclectic. It must contain references to other cultures. It is understood that the owner of the home has the opportunity to travel, get acquainted with remote corners of the world, their culture, foundations and achievements. But talking about the "pure rationality" of such knowledge is inappropriate. After all, an indispensable feature of Art Deco are notes of mystery and mystery.

The use of non-standard, expressively catchy materials was encouraged, which again emphasized the well-being of the owner. Art Deco came to its complete form somewhere in the mid-30s of the XX century. This style was finally actualized, according to some sources, again at an exhibition in Paris, but already in 1966.

It is worth noting that during that period the popularity of spiritualistic seances remained, some people continued to search for the mysteries of the old East. Compared to Art Nouveau, there is much more rigorous geometry.

Finishing options

Consider what options for finishing the elements of the room in this style are available.

Sten

When renovating a home in the spirit of Art Deco, it is necessary to diligently demonstrate sophistication and pathos. Each material must definitely add chic, develop a sense of a bohemian interior. Glossy, lacquered and polished surfaces are encouraged. In this case, the pathos of the material is accompanied by relatively simple color and geometric solutions, which eliminates visual overload. Wood, aluminum and glass surfaces are very important, as well as covering with expensive fabrics in all places where they can be used.

Ceiling

Art Deco designs are often associated with the houses of Hollywood's golden age movie stars. Of course, the usual ceiling panels will have to be abandoned completely - they categorically will not fit into the general outline. But single zigzag inclusions are welcome, which dilute the usual straight contours of the high ceiling. The standard solution for this style is the "Egyptian semicircle", symbolizing the dawn. Such a print in red-orange and golden-yellow tones is appropriate even in the most aristocratic branch of design with a claim to the highest chic.

Stretch ceilings are quite appropriate - multi-tiered, painted in various tones. The intersections of the ceiling with the walls are marked with clear borders.The entire composition is created in such a way that the geometry of the room is maximally emphasized.

The width of the ceiling structure and the saturation of its colors are selected individually, there are no rigid canons. Distorting elements must be mandatory - extremely sharp and impetuous, expressing maximum expression.

Among the favorites of modern designers are multilevel assemblies made of the following materials:

  • PVC;

  • GKL;

  • natural fabrics.

Paul

The chic design in the spirit of Art Deco touches this part of the room as well. When preparing the floor, it is appropriate to use black and white tiles in any convenient layout. It is important that the tiles are stone, not tiled. But even better, the use of natural stone will help to maintain the canons of style. The use of parquet is in keeping with the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. At least one species of precious wood must be allowed to make it.

If there is a desire to achieve a similar visual effect with more budgetary means, they can help:

  • laminate;

  • linoleum;

  • carpet with a simple geometric pattern;

  • skin.

When choosing parquet, they are guided by such characteristic elements of the disassembled style, such as:

  • stripes;

  • Sun rays;

  • steps;

  • zigzags;

  • framework.

Color palette

The colors of individual elements play a huge role in Art Deco. If used ineptly, they can create an unimaginable mishmash of colors, rather than a harmonious and pleasant luxury space. Therefore, the general advice is simple: with the slightest lack of confidence in your abilities, it is better to call designers. At least 70% of the entire surface of the room should be painted in calm pastel colors. For accent use diluted (as if "dirty") paints.

The accent can also be created in black tones - with an emphasis on the visual velvety color for furniture or on the contrasting patterns of wall decoration. A certain part of the interior can be done in glossy colors, but they should not be given priority. A rich brown tone is welcome, and in this regard, Art Deco is completely different from the more old-fashioned styles. You should not get carried away with the blue color - it does not fit well into the canon. But you can safely experiment with other paints:

  • saturated red;

  • ruby;

  • chocolate;

  • purple;

  • ivory.

Furniture selection

Like other style components, furnishings must produce a luxurious and sophisticated effect. The presence of geometric elements is encouraged, but not in a pure form, but in a complex mixture with "oriental" motives. Chairs, armchairs, sofas and even cabinets should have soft and streamlined geometric shapes. The creation of a chic setting is achieved with the help of silver and gilding, ivory, exotic woods.

You can find a place for mother-of-pearl, crocodile leather, and other materials that embody the ideals of luxury. Additional decoration of furniture is made by inlay or painting. It is allowed to use objects with glass and metal surfaces (in the past, they personified the peak of technical progress).

A fundamental feature of the style, in addition, is the use of multi-tiered, stepped furniture. The designers drew inspiration from the Babylonian ziggurats, diligently reproducing their geometry.

Such solutions are quite popular:

  • trapezoidal execution;

  • an abundance of sideboards, dressers and side tables, which is directly related to the solidity of the furnishings;

  • zigzag and meander ornaments.

Decor elements

The theme with ornaments should be revealed in a little more detail. In addition to zigzags, circles, squares and spirals are appropriate. In such simple forms, a characteristic technocratic attitude is expressed. At the same time, plots with cars, steamers, old airplanes, trains are more suitable.Pictures with exotic views of romantic countries of the East, traditional Asian clothes and other accessories are quite consistent with the spirit of Art Deco.

A ornaments with plant motifs can also be used. Such plots are especially characteristic in the European branch of the style, but in the USA they were much less fond of this. It is also necessary to note that the high style canons even apply to ventilation grilles. They are designed as boldly and strikingly as possible, achieving an amazing effect. The decor should be controversial - taking into account both primitive and the latest industrial motives.

Lighting

When decorating an interior in the spirit of Art Deco, you can use both ceiling lamps and sconces, table lamps. Geometric shapes should be as restrained as possible, however, emphasis should be placed on a bright saturated texture. It is imperative to use expensive materials - if the lamp looks cheap, it will not fit into the interior. The light should be bright, but "blinding" effects are not welcome - everything is done for the sake of maximum convenience.

Optimal filling of the space with light is achieved through the use of multilevel sources. It is common practice to use colors borrowed from the everyday life of African tribes or in ancient Greece. The lighting devices themselves must be strictly geometric. Or only the plafonds will be round, rectangular, square. Chandeliers and sconces from many tiers will be a great find. If the main emitted light is complemented by glitter and tints, then it will be fine.

Decoration of different rooms

Even in a small apartment, the Art Deco entrance hall will look colorful. Decor elements with tropical motives play an important role. The floor in the corridor is recommended to be laid out with ceramic tiles - it should have smooth patterns and geometric filling. The more sparkle and shine in the interior, the better. As for color, lilac and pastel colors are welcome.

According to a number of designers, an arch will become a logical entrance to the main rooms from the hallway. If a conventional doorway is used, then it is decorated with stained glass windows. All pieces of furniture are made of expensive quality wood. Banquets are used instead of ottomans. It is more correct to replace the curbstone with a console with original supports.

A staircase helps to connect different floors in private houses, and in the Art Deco style, it often contains forged elements. The main consideration is obvious - maximum grace and convenience. Every detail of the architectural element is specially thought out.

It is recommended to make large areas between spans. Podiums and tiers will help to visually decorate the stairs.

In the decoration of such interior elements, it is advised to use:

  • bronze;

  • silver;

  • ivory;

  • rock crystal (and other mineral inlays).

In any room, except in rare cases, decorative columns of different colors will be appropriate. Attention should be paid to the design of the kitchen. Floor cladding is preferred over wall work. It is covered with square (less often - hex) tiles. It should have contrasting colors in traditional black and white colors.

A good option would be a one-color version of the halves of the room. A very good solution is a dining group of dark marble (or at least the same color) installed on a light background. It is advisable to equip the podium perimeter with spotlights.

It is useful to pay attention to the execution of the cabinet. It practices a symbiosis of exotic materials, metal and glass, smooth lines. It is advisable to use mahogany furniture. It should give the impression of lightness and comfort. In comparison with the classrooms in the spirit of Art Nouveau, the room will be more functional and strict in appearance. If possible, you should use luxurious dark furniture.

An Art Deco bedroom can have a small area - in this case, the emphasis should naturally be placed on light colors. It is recommended to avoid dark shades so that there is no heavy effect. But they can be applied very carefully - like local accents. The selection of individual items is possible with the help of prints and drawings. It is also advisable to hang pictures in luxurious wooden frames.

Art Deco bedrooms can be decorated in various shades of gray. Both the presence of clear boundaries between them and a smooth transition are allowed. Individual decorative elements and surfaces can be made of aluminum or stainless steel. The walls are decorated in the most exquisite way. Accent decors or paintings are used on painted walls. When using expensive furniture, they shouldn't concentrate too much.

Examples in the interior

The photo shows one best option for the Art Deco style. The stylized sun on the wall is perceived quite positively. A charming wall with a non-standard pattern and the "heavenly" color of the chairs also successfully fit into the overall composition. A light, solid color floor adds charm.

An alternative solution might include, for example, a palm tree. As well as dark furniture and a wall with carefully selected photographs. The dark floor is decorated with a dark blue carpet.

Another option is presented:

  • light yellow floor;

  • a squat dark wood table;

  • cabinet with a large number of sections;

  • white and dark armchairs;

  • gramophone.
