It took several centuries to form the American style in the interior of the dwelling. During this time, the designers tried to combine all the main features of the past times and important milestones for America, the development of design was influenced by the classic as well as the colonial English style. The main features of modern trends in Art Nouveau and Art Deco, as well as retro and rustic country, are also noticeable. We will describe the main features of this style in our article.

What it is?

The roots of the American interior go back to the first half of the 18th century. It was then that the first European settlers appeared on the continent, who began to explore unknown overseas territories. Suddenly rich emigrants tried to equip their homes in the style of their national culture. However, it was not so easy to create such an environment - homeowners lacked cladding materials and suitable canvases, this did not allow them to accurately convey the necessary stylistic feature.

Soon, literally everything that was at hand began to be used in the arrangement of residential buildings. It was that moment that became a turning point then a new original style was born in the decoration of premises, which sharply differed from the traditional stiffness of the countries of the Old World.

The distinctive characteristics of the design direction are laconic decor, muted natural colors and clear geometry.

At the beginning of the XX century. some adjustments to the style were made by the World Exhibition of Industrial Achievements, held in Paris. After her, the whole world was carried away by the ideas of Art Deco, this style brought very extravagant and expensive interiors to American design. They can be seen in famous Hollywood films of that period.

American style is closer to refined minimalism these days. In America today they focus on practicality, functionality, ergonomics and comfort, puffy luxury is not in trend today. The American style is most often embodied by the owners of country villas and spacious cottages. The design is designed in an unobtrusive calm spirit, it combines features of eclecticism and laconicism. American style has well-recognizable features.

Modern interiors are characterized by imitation of luxury, substitution of natural materials with MDF and plastic cladding. The decor is dominated by economical localized lighting of the room, floor lamps, as well as table lamps and sconces abound. The central light is used exclusively in the living room. Rooms are divided into functional areas using partitions and open shelving. For American design, it is typical to combine several rooms with different functionality, for example, an entrance hall is often combined with a living room, and a bedroom with an office. The arrangement of furniture is central, and not along the line of the walls, as is customary in Russia.

The American trend is relevant for all types of housing - from a simple apartment to a mansion. To visually expand the space, unnecessary walls are demolished in the premises and partitions are removed.

For zoning a large area, furniture or a heterogeneous finish is used. Designers pay special attention to surface finishing.

Walls

The American design direction strives for the smoothest and most even wall design. The most widespread is the painting of a pre-plastered surface. The paints are monochromatic, matt. Alternative finishes can be wallpapering with a small print. Wall murals and wallpapers with large slabs violate the unobtrusive atmosphere of the home, therefore, they are unacceptable in continental interiors.

Ceilings

American interiors provide several options for decorating ceilings:

  • smooth bleached or light colored surface;
  • multi-level structure, complemented by several wooden beams;
  • moldings around the entire perimeter of the ceiling, they must be of the same color.

Floor

The floor surface is finished with wood flooring, tiles, laminated boards, parquet, artificial stone or self-leveling floor.

Views

Design ideas from a wide variety of cultures have influenced the rise of American style on the Internet. It is no secret that the United States has always been an attractive country for foreign citizens. In pursuit of the American dream, they massively broke away from their homes and brought along with them elements of their culture. The result was an interweaving of Latin American, African, Asian and, of course, European directions - this is reflected in the interior decor.

Today, the American style is represented by several main subspecies, their differences are explained by the national flavor and historical milestones in the development of the style. Distinguish between classic and modern neoclassical style and country.

Neoclassical style

The peculiarity of such interiors is elegance, sophisticated simplicity and a certain plasticity. Here, the most modern finishing materials and innovative technology harmoniously coexist with the traditional foundations of the formation of a living space.

In the interior, a combination of textiles from mixed fabrics, imitation of a fireplace and plastic panels is allowed.

Modern classic style

This is a tandem of comfort and ergonomics. Shown here are ergonomic furniture in a simple form, arranged in accordance with the classic standards of the style of the room. Despite the prevalence of modern decor, the interior is noticeable elements of Art Deco and classics. For premises, it is typical to combine classic elements and high-tech in one space. For example, a traditional fireplace is often adjacent to a plasma TV, exotic figurines with futuristic sconces, and a mirror mosaic with a carriage coupler.

Country

Many believe that this is a village direction that appeared in the American outback. This is not true, the design was first introduced in wealthy suburban homes. Contrary to popular belief, asceticism and the use of cheap materials are not at all characteristic of this style. The main elements of the culture were exposed ceiling beams, bulky furniture made from raw solid wood, and woodworking of the walls.

An obligatory attribute of any living room is a real stone with a small seating area in front of it; it is furnished with soft leather furniture. The attractiveness of country is due to the fact that it is as close as possible to naturalness and nature, as it is based on the use of a natural shade palette and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Obviously, American interiors can have quite significant differences, with both rustic and modern functional designs.

Color spectrum

The prevailing shades in American homes are as follows.

  • White - most often it is he who is used as a base or to highlight some accent details in the interior. In this case, it is not a snow-white shade that is chosen, but warmer half-tones - cream, creamy or milky. They look very colorful in tandem with the natural colors of wood and other natural materials.
  • Beige - used mainly in combination with white, can serve as a basic tone. Its undoubted advantage is that the color is non-staining and does not require constant worries about maintaining a neat appearance of the living space.
  • Sand - a discreet yellowish tone is not used as an independent color scheme, it is more often chosen for expressive accents. Usually furniture is painted in this color or carpet is selected in sand tones.
  • Chocolate - is an additional shade, allows you to shade individual elements of the interior decor, to give relief and depth to the entire design. Usually beams on the ceiling are painted in this color.

In the bedroom, the presence of raspberry and ultramarine shades is allowed. The decor looks very stylish in metallic or gilding colors - such tones look harmoniously with the basic color palette. Contrasting combinations in the interior are welcome. For example:

  • white with blue and sand;
  • white with scarlet and chocolate.

It is very important not to overload the American interior with too saturated colors; the design of all surfaces should be extremely restrained and monochrome.

Furniture

The American style is distinguished by its unique principles of selection and arrangement of furniture. The main interior items here are not located near the walls, but in the central part of the room or a dedicated area of a spacious room with a certain functional purpose. Separate items allow you to organize comfortable compositions by connecting them in the center. So, an armchair and a sofa are usually placed near coffee tables, a dining table is installed in the middle of the dining room so that it can be approached from either side, and an island is placed in the kitchen along the central part.

The furniture is chosen massive, if we are talking about the kitchen, it should also be practical. To design different functional areas of the room, furniture should be selected from one set. It is important that all furniture elements look harmoniously with each other in terms of color palette, texture and design.

Textile

Textiles in the arrangement of American homes carry a great semantic load, much greater than all other decorative elements. Curtains should be selected from natural fabrics, have a simple cut and monochrome colors. A laconic geometric print is allowed. The modern American style is characterized by the use of Roman blinds and blinds.

Carpets are used sparingly, they do not cover the entire surface of the rooms. Only small rugs are allowed near the bed in the bedroom and in the sitting area in the living room. Chair covers and upholstery are matched to the curtains.

Lighting

A spacious multifunctional room dictates careful consideration of all lighting options for each zone. American style makes use of small lamps around the perimeter of the room. A massive chandelier with a large number of horns is hung in the central part of the hall, local lighting is used in other areas (floor lamps, pendant and wall lamps, table lamps). Regardless of the type of light fixture, they should give a soft diffused light.

Accessories

Modern designers advise not to overload the American interior with overly bulky decorative details. In this style, coziness and comfort are most appreciated, therefore, family photos in frames, sofa pillows to match the curtains, and warm blankets will be the best solution. Compositions of fresh flowers, as well as indoor plants, will bring fresh notes to the room. An artificial fireplace will help to give the atmosphere a sense of family warmth.

Design ideas for different rooms

The interiors, decorated in accordance with the concept of the American stylistic direction, have been liked by many residents thanks to Hollywood films. Spacious halls, huge living rooms, cozy bedrooms and large kitchens could not leave anyone indifferent. That is why I would like to dwell in more detail on the basic principles of organizing a particular space in the house.

Children's

An American-style children's room must always match the whims of the child. Here you can see a huge number of pictures, posters and, of course, toys. There should be a lot of light in the room, a slight creative mess is encouraged. The girl's room can be pasted over with white-pink or beige wallpaper with an unobtrusive floral print. Children's drawings, cushions or images of your favorite cartoon characters will be used as bright accents. The boy's room is usually decorated with plain walls with posters and photographs on the theme of the child's hobbies.

At an early age, these can be toys and comics, adolescents are more often fond of sports or technology. Keep in mind that hanging a couple of photos and leaving all the other walls empty will not be American style.

There should be a lot of images, paintings, avant-garde graphics and even posters will do.

Bedrooms

Decorating a bedroom in American style is based on the combination of modern accessories and elements of antiquity within one living area. Usually, natural materials are selected to organize the space. Among the pieces of furniture, there is a classic bed, a folding armchair, a bedside table and a spacious chest of drawers. If the room allows, you can put a wardrobe, but it is better to provide a small separate dressing room. Ideally, there should be an entrance from the bedroom to a separate bathroom, which belongs only to the owner of the room.

The interior has a binary color scheme. So, in the decoration of the walls there are light shades, and brown and woody ones prevail in the furniture. Pictures, photographs, flowers, live plants and floor lamps contribute to the creation of the most comfortable atmosphere.

Bathroom

Bathrooms in any American movie look simple, but very cozy. The floor is laid out here with tiles, less often there is a waterproof laminate. The walls are covered with textured plaster and painted. Design projects look very unusual when a mosaic is laid out on the surface of the wall. The most popular are blue, pale pink, pale green colors.

Pretentious plumbing is inappropriate here, it is better to give preference to classic models. A must-have piece of furniture is a wall cabinet with a mirror on the doors. Terry towels neatly folded in a pile on open shelves give a special flavor to the American bathroom.

Living room

The design of the living room in the American theme has one important feature that distinguishes this direction from all the others. This is the presence of a large fireplace, around which valuable items for households are placed - photo frames, family albums or some memorable decor items. The sofa becomes the central place in the living room, it is turned to the fireplace, it should be located strictly in the middle of the room. A small table is set in front of him to drink tea and have a snack.

The furniture of a classic American room should be wooden, an easy chair or a wicker coffee table looks harmonious. The windows are decorated with fabric roller shutters or blinds; American-style curtains in the living room are not used. One of the walls is made a "wall of glory." Here are placed certificates, cups and other trophies of family members.

Kitchens

Traditionally, the kitchen is the place where food is prepared; in the American style, the room does not lose this function. However, unlike Russian houses, the kitchen is not used for eating. Americans prefer to eat in the dining room or, if there is none, in the living room. In accordance with the rules of American decor, a bar counter must be present in the interior of this room.

Since spacious rooms are usually reserved for kitchens, household appliances and furniture are predominantly large-sized here.

Hallway

A typical solution for an American hallway is an abundance of free space, a light color palette and an almost complete absence of any decorative elements inside the room. Americans popularize spacious and uncluttered hallways that will cheer up residents and their guests as soon as they cross the threshold.

In decoration, it is better to give preference to plain wallpaper or wallpaper with a small print. They look good in combination with MDF or wood glass panels. You can choose coverings of bright shades, but they must be in harmony with the general design of the living space.
