The bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in any home. Such an item should be as high quality and comfortable as possible. These characteristics are highly dependent on the bed frame and base.

What is it and why is it needed?

The comfort of a sleeping place directly depends on a properly selected mattress. It is placed on the base of the bed. This element plays an important role in the design of furniture, it is necessary for healthy sleep and good rest.

A good quality base of a suitable size can extend the life of the mattress. In addition, this component of the bed contributes to an even distribution of the load on the bed. It contributes to an excellent orthopedic effect.

Some types of bases provide high breathability of the mattress. Such options are more expensive, but with their help there is high-quality and natural air ventilation.

Modern manufacturers produce not only conventional, but also reinforced bases, designed for use by users with a large weight.

Without such details, the bed can be washed out under the influence of various loads, which will lead to the loss of its attractive appearance and deterioration of convenience.

There are several types of bases. Each option is designed for a specific operation and has a set of characteristics.

Solid

Solid bases (in other words - flat) are beds consisting of planed boards, cheap plywood or ordinary chipboard sheets. As a rule, such parts in the manufacturing process are subjected to various treatments with special protective and decorative compounds. Such bases are attached to the bed frame.

Solid substrates are heavier. They do not allow the mattress to fully reveal its anatomical abilities.

Another disadvantage of such designs is poor ventilation. For this reason, they do not last long and quickly fail.

Rigid lamellar base is no longer very popular today. This is the shield base. Furniture with such a component is inexpensive, and a variety of types of mattresses are suitable for it.

Most often, beds with rigid solid bases are chosen by people who have certain problems with the spine, in which it is necessary to sleep and rest only on a flat and not very soft surface.

Orthopedic

Has a frame made of wood (natural or artificial) or iron lattice anatomical base. Such options can be equipped with the popular lifting mechanism. This could be a sofa bed with a fold-out bed.

As a rule, such products stand on legs and have lamellas made of wood, which are attached to the base using special lat-holders.

Orthopedic constructions are among the most popular and demanded. They are distinguished by excellent air circulation, which makes sleeping places more hygienic and comfortable.

Lamellas in such models are straight and curved, depending on the shape of the furniture.

Orthopedic mattresses with such bases last much longer and do not lose their positive qualities.

Typically, prosthetic options are flexible. The lamellas in them are narrow and wide.

Models with wide slats are ideal for placement of mattresses with a dependent spring block called "bonnel" or for soft springless options.

Large width slats are inexpensive. However, after long-term use of such bases, a creak may occur, especially if the mortise method was used during the installation of the base.

Narrower slats are designed for mattresses with high spring density and high quality soft products. Most often, bases with thin slats are found in more expensive furniture.

Orthopedic bases are also available transforming... Such options are often complemented by an electrical wire. These systems can be controlled using buttons built into the furniture or a remote control. The owner chooses the position of the bed. You can, for example, raise the headboard.

Adjustable

Adjustable bed bases are in great demand today. They have adjustable lamellas, the stiffness of which can be changed using special regulators (or cursors).

Such elements can affect the degree of elasticity of the berth and adjust it for themselves.

In areas of the base where additional stiffness adjustment is required, double-layer battens are installed with additional cursors attached to each pair.

Collapsible

Collapsible bases are convenient and easy to use.

The main advantage of bedroom furniture with such a component is its mobility. The collapsible base can be easily moved to a new location and even transported a considerable distance in a car. Often, owners of summer cottages and country houses turn to such options. Such models are also equipped with slats and have an excellent orthopedic effect.

Non-collapsible

Nowadays, many firms offer customers high-quality floating beds. Such interesting furniture creates an amazing effect, as if it flies above the floor surface. As a rule, such products have non-separable static bases. Often this bedroom furniture is complemented by beautiful lighting at the bottom.

Frameless

A frameless base is not very expensive. Typically, these products are flexible and are most often found in small single beds. In another way, they are called liners. Similar structures are laid out along the longitudinal bars, which are in the inner part of the berth and are fixed using ordinary self-tapping screws.

Bed bases differ not only in rigidity, but also in shape.... Rectangular designs are classic. There are pieces of furniture that have a rounded, oval or curved base. Models with linen drawers in the lower part, as well as laconic options without a headboard, are common.

Materials (edit)

Today, many consumers prefer furniture equipped with a wooden base. The choice of such elements is due to their durability and environmental friendliness.

  • Parts made of high quality and reliable from natural wood species... Most often, in the production of such products, birch, pine, oak, beech or alder are used. Sleeping furniture with a natural wood base is expensive, but its performance is well worth the price.
  • Cheaper are the basics from plywood, MDF or chipboard... They are less strong, durable and reliable than natural options. Chipboard is completely hazardous to health. Such material is created from wood chips and other wood waste.

All components are bonded to each other using harmful formaldehyde resins, which, under certain conditions, can release hazardous substances.

  • The spring effect is different plastic structures... Such systems are often complemented by adjustable berths, control is carried out using a control panel. The service life of such a structure is on average 10-15 years. These products are durable and easy to use.
  • The most durable are metal rack or solid. The service life of such systems can exceed 25 years. Such constructions are inexpensive and have good orthopedic properties. Are not the most reliable mesh options. Both beds and folding sofas are equipped with similar bases.

Mesh metal structures do not withstand heavy loads and sag over time. This leads to the loss of the attractive appearance of the furniture and its convenience.

Dimensions (edit)

Bed bases can be of different sizes:

  • for single models: 80 × 200, 90 × 190, 90 × 200, 90 × 210, 80 × 190 cm;
  • for one and a half: 120 × 200, 120 × 190, 120 × 160 cm;
  • for double rooms: 140 × 200, 140 × 190, 140 × 200, 150 × 200, 158 × 205, 160 × 190, 160 × 200, 160 × 220, 180 × 200, 200 × 200, 220 × 200 cm.

For beds of non-standard sizes, the same non-standard bases are produced. For example, it can be a model in which the width of the berth is 159 cm.

What is the best base for the mattress?

The level of comfort of the bed depends on the base of the bed. To date, the highest quality and most comfortable are rack structures with wooden lamellas located at a certain distance from each other.

Such a base is orthopedic, so rest and sleep on it is a great pleasure.

More durable and reliable are the bases in which the slats are located at a close distance from each other. Such structures are reinforced and can easily withstand heavy loads. They are ideal for overweight people weighing 100 kg or more.

Rigid straight bases are more affordable. Being on such a surface, the mattress will not be provided with high-quality and natural ventilation (as in the case of plastic structures), which will negatively affect its hygienic characteristics and shorten its service life.

The mattress can deform over time and wash out on a metal mesh base. It is not designed for long-term operation and quickly loses its elasticity.

Rack metal structures are more reliable and durable. They have an excellent orthopedic effect.

How to insert lamellas?

The slats are attached to the bed base using a special holder tip. Similar elements are made from polypropylene, plastic or rubber.

These holders are attached to the furniture using a small bracket that is pre-attached to the frame.

The lamellas can be installed using special metal stands. Reiki is simply inserted into these parts.

In modern bed models, you can find frames with pre-drilled holes for the installation of holders.

The choice of one or another fastening for lamellas depends on the furniture body.

How to do it yourself?

The furniture base can be assembled by yourself. To do this, you need to stock up on the following devices:

  • bars;
  • laminated and sanded chipboard profiles;
  • MDF profiles;
  • dowels;
  • confirmatory;
  • eccentric coupler;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • plugs;
  • special edges for furniture;
  • PVA glue.

For the manufacture of a support for a mattress, a solid pine bar with a cross section of 50 × 50 mm is ideal. You also cannot do without laminated chipboard. Decorative details should be made of MDF.

The beam is useful for strengthening the base. It must serve as a support and foundation for the entire structure. It is best to purchase a pair of bars with a length of 4.5 m. There is no need to subject the tree to additional processing, since the base of the bed will not be located in a conspicuous place.

When buying a bar, you need to pay attention to the conditions in which it was previously stored.

It is not advisable to buy material that is contained without additional awnings or spacers. As a rule, such bars are characterized by high moisture content, unpleasant color and often have various defects or deformations on their surface.

The headboard of the base must be made of MDF and chipboard. The texture of the part should be directed from top to bottom. The bottom edge of the headboard needs to be milled to make it look more neat. This element is attached to the main beam using holders and is fixed with uprights on the side parts.

The main details of the base are the drawers and backs.

Drawers are longitudinal parts located at the base of the sleeping furniture. They are manufactured by initial preparation of the assembly holes. After these steps, you should fix the base bars with self-tapping screws and glue.

After preparing all the necessary parts, you can proceed to assembling the bed. It is recommended to do this at the place where you plan to install the resulting product.

After that, you need to put the center bar together with the supports and install the support required for the mattress.

It is necessary to attach the supports to the timber. For this, you can use ordinary self-tapping screws. Before this, the bars must be attached to the holders, which must be attached to the backrests at the very beginning.

After all the above steps, you can proceed to the final stage of making the bed base: installing the base for the mattress. This part can be made from chipboard. It should consist of two halves, since such structures are much easier to assemble.

It is much easier and faster to make bases from ordinary pallets. Such pieces of furniture look very original in many interiors and are good alternatives to regular beds.

For the manufacture of such products, it is recommended to use stronger and more durable Euro pallets.

First you need to purchase 6-12 pallets and grind them thoroughly, since such materials most often have jags and splinters on their surface. It is also recommended to treat pallets with special antiseptic agents.

After that, the pallets must be put on the floor and fastened to each other using self-tapping screws.

Mattresses in such furniture are laid on a simple and rigid base. Some users add pre-purchased bases with slats to such homemade furniture.
