The subtleties of making chalk paint with your own hands

There is a statement that repairs are costly and troublesome, but today this process can be interesting and even exciting, especially if you do some types of work yourself. You can transform the interior of any room with the help of chalk paint, which has its own characteristics and advantages over other finishing materials.

Features of chalk paint

One of the features of this type of paint is the ability to form a fairly durable coating with a matte tint on the surface. The paint, depending on the type of coating, can be slate or textured. The main advantage of this paint is the formation of an abrasion-resistant surface that can be treated with soapy water, not to mention that removing the chalk pattern is not difficult.

Chalk paint is one of the universal finishing agents, as it fits perfectly on most materials, be it wood, metal, stone or glass. With its help, you can transform the surface of any furniture., after all, it is quite simple to apply it, and the laid layer dries very quickly.

It does not matter on what surface the composition is applied, the formed layer will help to hide most of the existing defects on both wood and metal.

The environmental safety of this paint is beyond doubt. It is non-toxic and does not emit harmful substances into the surrounding space. The material is fireproof, so you can decorate surfaces with it in any room. But it's worth remembering that slate paint belongs to the types that are used only for interior work.

Painting with a chalk composition is possible in a room for any purpose, be it a nursery, a kitchen or a hallway. For children, a slate surface is an opportunity to show their talents, because they can paint on it. The kitchen is another room where the slate surface will come in handy. On kitchen cabinets, in the countertop area or on the wall, the surface covered with chalk paint will help you write down recipes, leave reminders household members, make a menu or a shopping list.

The hallway is also a great place for slate surfaces. Reminders written on the surface will not let you forget about what you need to take with you when you leave home, or urgently record your phone.

With the help of chalk paint, you can decorate almost any object: a tray, a jar for cereals, a cutting board, a container with plants and other things that need to be signed.

Slate paints are widely used not only at home, but are also used to decorate public institutions: cafes, bars, restaurants, offices.

The division into types is carried out due to the composition of the paint and the type of surface obtained as a result of the application of the layer. Created by a British designer in 1990, the chalk paint was originally formulated and sold under the brand name Chalk Paint. The recipe for this composition has not yet been disclosed, so there are many copies on the market made from a variety of components. All paints are water-based, and the additives present in them give the corresponding names to the chalk compositions.

Resin paints contain resins of natural or synthetic origin. The mineral species contain silicates.

Casein is an additional component of milk paints, while oil paints contain flaxseed oil.Any of these paints can be used for artistic painting on glass, metal or wood, the main thing is to choose the right option.

Ready-made chalk compositions are available in cans or cans. The most famous today is a Finnish manufacturer that produces a wide range of paints and varnishes, including slate paint. The coating formed by chalk paint can have a different surface in texture.: smooth, paintable, and bumpy, with a relief.

Swedish or Finnish paints, which form a smooth or textured surface, are of different types, and differ in some components that give certain properties to the applied layer. The basis of textured or slate paint is acrylic, silicone or latex (rubber) emulsion.

To impart magnetic properties to the slate surface in the latex emulsion add small particles of metal. They give the paint magnetic properties.... Magnetic paint perfectly adheres to any materials, and the formed surface is a good help in educational activities for children.

Emulsions that create a slate effect on the surface are usually dark in color.: black, gray, metallic, dark green, burgundy and brown. This is necessary in order for the chalk pattern to be visible on the surface. A colorless base is also available, which can be given any shade by adding color to the container or painting a colored surface.

For decorating individual objects and painting walls, mother-of-pearl paint is often used. White is the most commonly used color for ceiling finishes. Ceiling whitewashing can be carried out both with ready-made compounds and prepared at home. For materials exposed to heating, special heat-resistant or refractory compounds are used.

In order for the applied drawing to stay on the surface as long as possible, the decorated object is sent to the kiln for firing. The possibility of long-term temperature exposure is possible due to the high thermal stability of chalk compositions. These include stained glass paints used for painting on glass or ceramics.

What do you need for cooking?

In order to prepare a chalk textured paint, several components must be prepared. The base, as a rule, is a ready-made acrylic or latex composition "Star". Acrylic paint is a timeless classic and a base for all types of chalk formulations.

A filler is needed to form a bumpy surface. A variety of materials can be used as a filler: stone chips, quartz dust, synthetic fibers and other components that give the painted material an attractive relief. These components are classified according to their particle size: coarse (up to 2 mm), fine (≥0.5 mm) and medium (up to 1 mm).

It is known that the acrylic composition dries quickly, but this property of the paint is not always positive. In the course of performing artistic and decorative works, quick drying is not an advantage, and therefore, a drying retarder is added to the prepared solution.... A fixer is used as a fixing component. It not only creates a chalky surface effect, but also ensures the adhesion of the composition to the material.

The use of ordinary putty, plaster or grout gives the surface strength and resistance to mechanical stress.

The components of textured paints are solid particles, and a solvent is added to give the composition the desired consistency. Water is used as a diluent for acrylic and latex components.

Various tools can be used to apply the composition. The use of certain tools depends on the density of the coloring composition and the place of their application. A spray bottle is used to apply liquid formulations, and brushes, rollers and a sponge are used for thick paints.

Recipes

In order to prepare chalk paint, not many ingredients are required. Most of them are familiar to everyone, and the cost of self-prepared compositions is much less than that of ready-made paints.

There are several recipes that can be used to create a slate-effect surface. The basis of each recipe is acrylic paint, selected based on the place of work. Facade paint is used for outdoor use, and a different composition is used to paint indoor surfaces.

  • Recipe number 1... It is necessary to mix 200 gr. acrylic compound with two tablespoons of cement. You can use pure cement or a mixture of it.
  • Recipe number 2... This recipe is suitable for painting small surfaces. The composition of the mixture includes three parts of paint, one part of acrylic matt varnish, one part of cement, putty or tile grout, and one part of water.

A component such as regular baking soda can be used to create a chalky surface. For 2/3 of the coloring composition, 1/3 of the soda will be required. You can use starch instead of baking soda. The ratio of the components is the same, but a little more water is required for dilution.

In order to make the best composition, which will lie in an even layer, does not require sanding and is suitable for application on any material, you need to prepare a mixture of calcium carbonate (chalk) and paint... Powdered mass of calcium carbonate is mixed with paint in the same proportions as soda. The use of chalk to paint surfaces is an age-old tradition, so this recipe is the most common and sought-after.

The best option is plaster of paris, mixed with paint in a ratio of 3: 1. For relief, various components are added to the composition. Their choice depends on the expected effect.

A textured velvet surface can be obtained by adding metal filings and quartz sand to the main composition. This composition is an excellent solution for wall decoration.

Dyeing technology

Painting a textured or slate base requires some surface preparation and tools. The slate may require a brush if the surface area is small and a roller if the surface is large. Plain or notched trowels, stenciled sponges, stiff brushes and a textured roller can be used to apply the textured paint layer.

The choice of instrument depends on the wishes of the owner and the expected effect.

Preparation for staining should begin by removing old coatings. To apply a layer of slate paint, the surface should be removed from irregularities by sanding it with sandpaper, especially if the base is silicone. When painting the surface with a textured base, only large defects can be removed, and, if necessary, primed. The paint will perfectly adhere to concrete, brick, stone and plaster surfaceswithout requiring tedious alignment.

In order for the slate (marker) and structural paint to lay in an even layer, you need to thoroughly mix the composition, and only then pour it into a prepared container. Surface painting should be started from hard-to-reach places, gradually moving to the main surface. After applying the first layer, you need to wait until it dries completely., and only then apply the second layer.

Useful Tips

Painting and subsequent drying of the surface should take place in a room with a certain microclimate, the air temperature should be at least 10 ° C, and the humidity should not exceed 85%.A surface with a slate effect in a day must be treated with calcium carbonate chalk, rubbing it in with soft circular movements.

The painted surface can be used no earlier than two days later.... It is necessary to wait until the layer has completely hardened. When preparing the composition for painting the surface, you need to correctly calculate the consumption. Textured paint has a higher composition consumption compared to slate paint. For coloring 1m² you need at least 600 gr.
