With the onset of summer, the ubiquitous midges appear on the streets and in apartments, which causes a lot of problems. Most people are familiar with mosquitoes from early childhood - they itch under the ear at night, bite, and a blister appears at the site of the bite. Modern industry has developed many means that repel these insects, but the "grandmother's" means have no less effect.

Plants

Just one mosquito can spoil a person all night, because its annoying buzzing does not allow anyone to fall asleep. The bitten place looks extremely unaesthetic, besides, it aches and itches. It is no coincidence that more and more sprays, creams, plates and spirals appear on sale, scaring off bloodsuckers even on the approach. However, they are not always at hand - in this case, folk methods will come to the rescue, which are no less effective.

Mosquitoes are known to have a highly developed sense of smell and react strongly to odors. Moreover, they do not have to be sharp at all. Many insect repellent herbs are pleasing to humans and their pets.

Geranium

This plant adorns the windows of many of our compatriots. Meanwhile, it contains geraniol, which is an active component of natural repellents. If insects overpower you in the summer, you can safely put a couple of pots with this flower in your bedroom. And if you like to relax in the yard with family and friends before going to bed, plant geraniums next to the gazebo. Believe me, not a single bloodsucker can prevent you from enjoying communication.

Eucalyptus

The unusual properties of the eucalyptus tree were discovered by English colonists after the discovery of Australia. It is known that no cases of malaria have been reported in eucalyptus forests. This plant is recognized as one of the most effective in the fight against annoying mosquitoes. Its essential oils cause disorientation in parasites - they lose the ability to seek food, in the end they die of hunger. Of course, it is quite difficult to grow a eucalyptus tree in our latitudes, far from the tropical climate. But everyone can buy dry eucalyptus herb in a pharmacy. And a pleasant bonus will be the fact that ticks and mosquitoes will leave your home after the mosquitoes.

Life hack: if your fumigator runs out of liquid, you can use a decoction of eucalyptus instead. For this, 1 tbsp. l. the dried plants are poured with water and boiled over low heat for a quarter of an hour. Then let it brew until it cools completely and filter.

Such a broth can be safely poured into a container where there used to be liquid from mosquitoes, and connect the fumigator to an outlet.

Juniper

Juniper will be indispensable during outdoor recreation. Just put a few branches of this coniferous plant in the fire, when they light up - you will immediately smell the pungent smell of smoke. It is he who will scare away mosquitoes.

Laurel

An unpleasant smell for insects is also released when the bay leaf is burned. However, if thrown into a fire, it will burn almost instantly. In nature, it is best to heat a metal jar or frying pan - and lightly "fry" dry laurel leaves on it.

Mint

Since ancient times, people have been using mint as an aromatic additive to tea. Its smell is pleasant to everyone except mosquitoes - even the slightest presence of mint in the garden or in the house makes these insects stay as far away as possible. From fresh or dry mint leaves, you can make a personal protective agent: for this you need to finely chop the grass and rub the skin with it.

Believe me, you will be truly unbearable for bloodsuckers. And if mosquitoes have already bitten you, then mint can reduce inflammation, relieve itching and swelling.

Citronella

In America, a plant from the bluegrass family is widespread for getting rid of bloodsuckers. In our country, the culture is known as lemongrass. Citronella oil is in demand in the manufacture of candles, as well as spirals and sprays against flying insects. It has a strong citrus scent that is pleasant to humans but irritating to mosquitoes.

Citronella oil can be used to lubricate the skin in purified form or in combination with any other repellent. Owners of private houses and summer cottages can grow lemongrass near the doors and windows of the house - that is, near the places from where the annoying midges enter the house.

Lemongrass decoction used for indoor spraying gives a good effect.

Essential oils

People who like aromatherapy probably have an aroma lamp in their arsenal; it can be a good alternative to an industrial fumigator. An aroma lamp is a saucer heated from below with candles. To aromatize the room, water is poured into a saucer and a little fragrant oil is dripped at the rate of 2-3 drops per 5 square meters. m of the room area. Under the influence of heat, the oil begins to evaporate, filling the space with the scent of medicinal plants. For mosquito control, lavender, chamomile, cedar or geranium oils are commonly used.

When going for an evening walk, you can apply some essential oil to your skin. Alternatively, put some fragrance in the locket and wear it around your neck. To rest in peace, saturate a napkin with oil and place it near your bed.

Thus, you can solve two problems at once: drive away the mosquitoes, and get rid of insomnia.

There are other plants that can repel mosquitoes.

  • Marigold. These beautiful yellow or orange flowers contain a natural repellent that repels the vast majority of insects with its scent. Mosquitoes are no exception, they cannot stand a specific aroma and fly away from its source.
  • Garlic. It contains allicin, when eating garlic dishes, it mixes with the natural smell of humans and becomes extremely unattractive to blood-sucking parasites. From the side of mosquitoes, such a person will look like a spoiled product, which insects try to bypass.
  • However, you can use it without necessarily eating it. Chopped garlic can be sprinkled on the area around the house or garlic chips can be mixed with peppermint oil to intensify the aroma. By grinding the garlic on a grater, you can make up an ointment for the skin. Believe me, not a single bloodsucker will fly up to people exuding the smell of garlic.
  • Carnation. Clove gives a good effect against mosquitoes; it is used both in the form of oil and in dried form. If you have the buds of this seasoning, pour boiling water over them, let it brew for a quarter of an hour and moisten the skin.
  • Rosemary. This fragrant flower easily copes with the invasion of mosquitoes and other midges. If you are barbecuing or grilling, simply place a couple of leaves of this herb on the wire rack. Then mosquitoes will not fly closer than 15 meters to you.
  • Lavender. People admire this flower and compose songs in honor of it, but mosquitoes are unlikely to agree with such love. Pests do not like the harsh scent of these purple flowers and tend to stay as far away from it as possible.
  • Fragrances also have a deterrent effect. valerian, tobacco, marigold, elderberry and Caucasian chamomile.

Vinegar

Bloodsuckers are afraid of vinegar. It takes a long time to prepare repellents based on it, but believe me - the result is worth it. To prepare an effective composition against midges at home, 1 tbsp. l. dry rosemary and 1 tbsp.l. lavender is poured with 1 glass of vinegar. The resulting infusion should be left in a dark place for 10-14 days, from time to time the jar should be shaken. The resulting drug is highly effective against mosquitoes.

You can use it in a variety of ways. For example, pour into a spray bottle and spray onto clothing. Window frames and doorways are sprayed to protect the home. If you want to use this composition on the skin, then the concentration of vinegar should be reduced by diluting the solution twice with water.

Vinegar has a very pungent smell, but you should not worry - after drying it will become almost imperceptible to humans, but at the same time it will be as before to drive away insects.

Other deterrent odors

In order to drive away mosquitoes in the apartment and on the street, you can use other scents.

  • Coffee. Place the coffee grounds or instant coffee powder on the foil and ignite it. Using this method, you can quickly and easily make an analogue of a fumigator, and it is absolutely safe and environmentally friendly.
  • Cologne. If you do not have time to engage in a long search for herbs, and protection from bloodsuckers is required immediately, buy Carnation cologne at the pharmacy. Mosquitoes do not like alcohol-containing solutions, and in combination with the smell of cloves, the effect will be double.
  • Vanillin. The smell of vanilla is firmly associated with fresh baked goods, but it is hateful for midges and mosquitoes. To protect yourself and your family from insects, 0.5 tbsp. l. vanilla powder is dissolved in 1 glass of warm water, moistened with a cotton pad and wiped on the skin. And you can also mix 50-60 g of powder with baby cream, mix well and lubricate all unprotected areas of the body.
  • "Star". Many of us are familiar with the famous Zvezdochka balm. As children, we were sure that this is a truly magical remedy that heals all ailments. Of course it is not. However, when it comes to protection against mosquitoes, its effect is beyond praise. To get rid of insects, you need to apply the balm to the skin pointwise, and then you can be sure that mosquitoes will not even show their nose in your home. However, remember that it is not recommended to rub it over the entire surface of the skin, in which case you can get serious irritation.

If the "Star" is not at hand, you can use any drug containing camphor.
