A fireplace with the effect of a living flame will help to bring a zest to the interior, add coziness and home warmth to your home. Modern models completely imitate real fire, and those gathered around the hearth will even hear the characteristic crackle of burning logs. At the same time, such an accessory has neither smoke nor the threat of fire. It does not require compliance with all fire safety requirements, it is quite simple to install, ergonomic, and therefore can be installed even in urban dwellings.

Peculiarities

Fireplaces of this kind are, rather, heating devices, characterized by the presence of a fire imitation system. Real flame devices are a complex mechanism.

It includes 2 main systems that work autonomously from each other:

  • heating system;
  • live fire imitation system.

Due to the fact that the systems are not interconnected, the user can enjoy the view of an open fire, but at the same time turn off the heating function.

Other components of such devices include:

  • a device for simulating a flame;
  • fake firebox;
  • artificial, imitating natural coals and logs;
  • decorative grates;
  • remote control, with the help of which the selection and installation of the operating mode of the electric fireplace is carried out.

Visually, most of the fireplaces are divided into 2 parts - this is a portal (the outer part framing the flame) and a firebox (firewood or coals are placed here, a fire is burning). Some models do not have a portal. The hearth, in turn, is built-in (has a certain size, is built into the portal and is connected to the mains) and replaceable (needs a special frame, usually made to order).

Unlike standard wood and gas fireplaces, electric has a number of advantages.

  • Its installation does not need to be coordinated with the relevant authorities, and in most cases you do not even have to call a specialist for installation.
  • Electric fireplaces are easy to maintain as they do not have a chimney to clean or a firebox that is periodically covered with soot. All care consists in wiping dust from the surface, replacing bulbs and changing water.
  • Safety is due to the fact that when it burns, no toxins and carbon monoxide are released, and improper operation of the system is excluded.
  • Small dimensions, no need to organize a chimney make it possible to use electric fireplaces even in small rooms that do not differ in the impressive height of the ceilings. The only type of room where the installation of the accessory is unacceptable are rooms with high humidity.
  • The presence of a thermostat in the fireplace allows it to heat the room to a certain temperature without overdrying the air. There is a mode of complete shutdown of heating.
  • The presence of additional options, among which the most popular are humidification and purification of the air, the possibility of musical accompaniment of the work of the hearth.
  • The cost of an electric fireplace is on average 5 times less than the purchase and installation price of a gas or wood-burning analogue. Moreover, the operation of the electric version will also cost less. The main expense item is electricity bills.
  • There is no need to worry about the sources of combustion, because the fireplaces are powered by the mains.

    Many fear that installing an electric fireplace will lead to a significant increase in energy costs.Such fears are unfounded, since when using the decorative functionality of the fireplace (without heating), the cost of paying bills will increase slightly. When used as a heating system, it uses the same amount of electricity as household heaters.

    A decorative fireplace can be of several types.

    • Fireplace complexes, consisting of separate parts - an electric fireplace and a portal to it. Moreover, they can be sold both as a set or separately (the buyer himself combines the elements based on his stylistic requirements). Finally, you can purchase a fireplace, and make a portal to it with your own hands.
    • Compact devices, outwardly similar to the design of a plasma TV. This model is optimal for a small apartment, since the fireplace structure can be built into the wall or located in a special niche and even simply hung on the wall.

    By the way, built-in versions with sufficient power may well replace several battery sections. Built-in models, located in wall niches, look compact, do not change the geometry of the room.

    The wall-mounted version is simply fixed to a specific wall and is the most compact type. A variety of compact devices are 2-sided foci.

      Mobile devices that in some ways resemble stove stoves - if necessary, they are easily transferred from room to room. It is easy to activate such a fireplace - just insert the plug into the outlet.

      • Miniature hearths, which are small baskets, wrought iron wood boxes. The illusion is created that they are filled with wood and coals, which are slowly smoldering. Turning on such a firebox is also not difficult - just connect it to the mains.

      If we talk about the technology of obtaining a flame, then there are several types of fireplaces.

      • Electromechanicalin which the flame is produced by the light of halogen or LED lamps. When a special mask rotates by the engine, the lamps shine, and glare and reflections characteristic of fire appear on the screen.
      • Steamin which the effect of fire is provided by steam. It is backlit with colored lamps. Thanks to the steam, it is possible to get not only the visibility of fire, but also smoke.

      Steam or water accessory allows you to get the most realistic combustion. This is achieved by illuminating the water vapor with lamps. Despite the variety of designs of such devices, they all have the same "stuffing" - these are steam generators and a lighting system. And in order for the steam to dissipate throughout the fireplace, there is a special diffuser in its device.

      The device has a reservoir for water, which needs to be refilled periodically. It is necessary to monitor the quality and degree of water purification, otherwise the reservoir will quickly become covered with deposits, and the device itself will become unusable. Based on the volume of the container, the hearth does not require adding water from one day to several days of work.

      • Fireplace, on the screen of which a video of a burning hearth is shown. Modern models have a 3D perspective, due to which the maximum realism of the displayed image is achieved. The disadvantage of video fireplaces is the cyclicity of the image, that is, after a certain period of time, the video of the flame begins to repeat itself, go in a circle.

      Depending on the "fuel" used, there are several types of fireplaces.

      • On the wood. To one degree or another, they can imitate natural logs from almost completely preserved to significantly burned out. Dummies of logs, like real ones, can be placed by the fireplace in a special basket or fireplace niche. This decor will look authentic and harmonious.
      • On coals. Common coals are used, stacked on a pallet. When the lamps work, the effect of glowing coals is obtained.
      • On the stones. In this case, decorative stones are placed in the firebox.

            The burning of a false fire can range from smoldering, a small fire to an even more imposing flame.

            Depending on the size, fireplaces of the following types are distinguished:

            • standard (520x620hx240 mm);
            • wide (up to 1000 mm);
            • extra wide (up to 2500 mm).

            There are also small (portable) fireplaces, including those installed even on the table.

            Style

            "Heaters" fit perfectly into most classic-style living rooms and offices. The most common options for finishing materials for such fireplaces are wood, stone, tiles, decorative plaster, stucco can be used as decor. They are characterized by monumentality and the presence of portals. In the kitchen or in the dining room, as well as in the office, stylized stove-stoves look spectacular.

            To obtain harmonious interiors, it is recommended to place natural logs and tools for mixing coals, various tongs near the fireplace.

            For interiors in a modern style it is better to select electric fireplaces framed with glass, plastic, mirrors, various modern materials with tinted or metallic effects.

            The beauty of modern-style devices is that they can have a neutral hue or serve as a bright color accent in a room. However, they usually have a simple, laconic shape and unobtrusive finish.

            For canteens country style it is appropriate to use fireplaces that look more like stoves. They are large enough and have portals. As finishing materials, you can use tiles that imitate brickwork, plaster for clay or chalk surfaces.

            The interior should be supplemented with wooden furniture, natural textiles, wicker accessories.

            It is unfair to think that the fireplace will not fit into modern "urban" styles - hi-tech or loft... However, in such rooms, it should not have the usual decor. Preference should be given to fireplaces that are original in shape. Two-sided devices look interesting, which, moreover, can serve for space zoning.

            Accessories in a retro style look harmonious in the loft interior, within which elements of antiquity and modern elements are eclectically combined.

            Finishing with natural stone, tiles imitating rough brickwork is also suitable.

            How to do it yourself?

            In order to save money, as well as to achieve the exclusivity of the fireplace, its portal can be done by hand. Homemade portals can be made from a variety of materials. The most accessible and inexpensive will be drywall, while it is recommended to use its moisture-resistant variety. Another budget option is a portal made of chipboard or fiberboard (made on the basis of pressed wood).

            For more noble and unique interiors, opt for wood. However, this design will be quite expensive. The same can be said about stone portals. Their choice is diverse - from more affordable shell rock to luxurious granite. These materials cannot be processed and sawed at home, so you will have to order the cutting of elements for facing the fireplace in specialized workshops.

            Stylish and modern is the polyurethane molding. It has an average cost, while being easy to assemble, looks harmoniously in modern interiors.

            First of all, the portal pedestal is cut out. The optimal material for it is laminated MDF, since it is characterized by resistance to moisture and high temperatures. The base should be wider than the portal itself. For a classic fireplace, a pedestal is made - a rectangle, while the same element in a corner fireplace has a five-pointed shape.

            The fireplace frame is best done with drywall. It is stable, easy to cut and has a low cost. First of all, with the help of profiles (rack and guide), the frame is made. First, the markings of the future fireplace are drawn on the wall, exactly corresponding to the sketches.It also carries over to the base. Once again, having carefully checked the accuracy of the marking, proceed to the installation of the profiles. The result is a parallelepiped of profiles.

            To strengthen the upper part of the parallelepiped, where the "mantel" will be, additional profiles are fastened crosswise. Similarly, with the help of profiles, an imitation of a chimney is made. However, you can do without it.

            The reliable operation of an electric fireplace is determined by the quality of the wiring. A self-extinguishing wire is used for it, which is laid exclusively in a metal sleeve into the portal. If there is a grounding system in the room, three-wire wiring is used!

            The socket must also be grounded, ideally if it is ceramic. If the socket is behind the fireplace, make a separate switch for it. This way you can easily disconnect the device from the mains.

            Cut plasterboard sheets are attached to the profile structure using metal dowels.

            For safety reasons, the space between the wall of the room and the "back" of the fireplace is lined with heat-insulating material (usually heat-resistant mineral wool).

            The joints between the drywall sheets are hidden with a putty. To protect the corners of the structure from damage, you can use perforated corners. Having completed the fastening of drywall, they perform a rough finish of the structure - they primer, putty, make holes for ventilation.

            Making a fireplace with your own hands is completed by decorating it.

            As a material for external decoration, natural stone, textured plaster, metal elements can be used (the latter option is suitable for high-tech fireplaces).

            Tips & Tricks

            As an interior detail, an electric fireplace should be selected taking into account the characteristics of the room.

            First of all, you need to decide on the location of the fireplace. If there is a free corner in the room, you can opt for a corner electric fireplace with a portal. Such models look monumental and give the room a special reliability and solidity. However, when such versions are in small spaces, they can be cumbersome. In this case, it is better to purchase mobile or built-in, hinged fireplaces.

            The next step is choosing the type of fireplace. It is important to evaluate not only the technical characteristics of the models, but also your own strengths. After all, different types of fireplaces require different maintenance. So, it is enough to remove dust from fireplace screens, while mechanized counterparts periodically require repair and adjustment. We'll have to turn to professionals. In steam versions, you need to take care of the condition of the cartridge and do not forget to add water.

            After you have decided where your future fireplace is located (that is, you understand what approximately the size of the device should be) and what type it is, you can begin to assess the external characteristics. In this case, one should take into account the style of the interior, the color scheme of the room.

            After you have settled on a specific model, check its technical features, read the warranty terms of use.

            The fireplace, like any electrical appliance, must be equipped with overheating protection. Usually these are auto-shutdown systems when certain criteria are reached (overheating, long-term operation). If you are looking for a heating model, pay attention to its capacity. This indicator must be at least 1.5 kW.

            The fireplace should be installed after careful calculations. You must make sure that it looks harmonious and compact in the interior. When purchasing an electric fireplace for a private house, replacing the usual fireplaces, choose massive, classic models. Otherwise, the device will simply get lost in a large room.

            Manufacturers

            Today, on the market for electric fireplaces, there are 2 main types of them.

            • Serial production, that is, manufactured according to established schemes.As a rule, these are mobile devices weighing up to 25 kg and costing up to $ 700.
            • Exclusive, which are manufactured by manufacturers according to specially designed schemes. Usually such fireplaces are not found in stores, they are presented in catalogs and are made directly for the customer. Such fireplaces are distinguished by the maximum realism and uniqueness of design. It is logical that their cost is higher, it starts from $ 1000.

            Among modern manufacturers, some brands deserve attention.

            • Hark. Decorative fireplaces from Germany are characterized by the highest quality and the same high cost. Standard designs are produced, that is, serial production is established.
            • Dimplex. Irish fireplaces popular with buyers. The latter is due to the variety of models of fireplaces, as well as the possibility of making a custom-made firebox. In addition, this manufacturer offers very large fireplaces (Marana). The Opti-Myst series of this brand is considered the most realistic. This is achieved through a 3D image of the flame that can be viewed from any angle.

            How the Dimplex electric fireplace works with a live flame, see the next video.

            • Electrolux. A distinctive feature of the manufacturer is the abundance in the line of built-in fireplaces at an affordable price. There are many models here that cope with the heating function due to the presence of a fan heater or mirror reflectors. At the same time, the maximum possible power in these models is 2 kW. More expensive models are equipped with air humidifiers and simulate the sound of crackling logs when burning.
            • Helios. The fireplaces of this brand are also characterized by maximum realism, in addition, the models combine advanced technology and perfect design. Attention should be paid to the "RealFlame" electric hearth related to steam. There is a sound effect, heating function, 2 heating modes.
                • Athena. The production of these fireplaces is carried out in Russia using Chinese technologies. These models are especially loved by owners of small city apartments, since the models are compact. Most of the structures are based on MDF, which determines their strength and affordability. A decorative stone is often used as a decoration, however, no superfluous and pretentious elements were found in the fireplaces of this brand.

                The hearths, also intended for heating, have a minimum power, therefore they cannot be used as the main source of heating.

                Beautiful examples in the interior

                When placing a fireplace, it is important to take into account the stylistic features and dimensions of the room.

                Traditionally, fireplaces are located in the living room. At the same time, the walls parallel to the window are considered the best location for them. For rooms in a classic interior, it is better to choose wall-mounted fireplaces with a body and a portal, as well as corner counterparts. But a small corner analogue without a portal is an excellent solution for small areas.

                For zoning, it is better to choose free-standing or suspended hearths. To create a cozy corner, sofas, armchairs are placed near the sofa, and a carpet is placed on the floor.

                When placing a fireplace in the bedroom, it will be possible to fill the room with an atmosphere of warmth and romance. The hearth should be placed opposite the bed, decorating the fireplace wall with photographs.

                In classic interiors, fireplaces with stone, wood design look good. They are also used for cladding hearths in rustic and country style. It is noteworthy that it does not have to be completely lined with stone.

                When choosing a fireplace decorated with natural stone, choose furniture made from natural materials, for example, leather upholstered in noble brown shades.

                Most often, fireplaces are installed in living rooms and bedrooms, but this is not the rule. Nothing prevents you from installing an electric fireplace, for example, in the bathroom. True, for this it must be large enough.

                In the dining room, the fireplace will also create an atmosphere of coziness, home warmth.

                Do not forget that regardless of the location, the fireplace should become the stylistic center of the room. To do this, all accents should be directed to the hearth. This can be done, for example, by using a recessed model against a white wall.
