The sight of an open fire adjusts a person to a philosophical mood, makes him think about eternal values and the passage of time. Fire calms and warms, gives a feeling of security and comfort. For these reasons, with a huge variety of all kinds of boilers, batteries and electric heaters, many people continue to choose fireplaces to decorate their homes and apartments.

Fireplaces can both perform an exclusively decorative function, and really heat the room. They can be antique stone or modern electric ones, with real hot fire or its imitation. Only one thing is certain - any fireplace attracts eyes, gathers guests around it and is one of the most noticeable objects in the room. It is for these reasons that the owners of fireplaces so carefully decorate them for various holidays.

For new year and christmas

Most often, the fireplace is "dressed up" before the onset of the Christmas and New Year holidays. Traditionally, a red-green range is chosen, fresh spruce branches, cones and candles are used. Knitted socks are hung on a ribbon, into which small gifts for children and adults are folded. However, following the traditions, one should not forget about the compatibility of the decorations with the general interior of the room and the fireplace itself.

For metal fireplaces, furniture and walls in light colors, decorations in blue and silver tones are suitable, for brighter rooms - golden-red decor.

A combination of different materials is allowed:

  • A garland made with cones, spruce or pine branches and other materials is a classic decoration of a mantel. You can dream up about the shades and shapes of such a garland yourself.
  • Christmas wreaths, which are traditionally hung on the front door, can also be used to decorate the fireplace. You can hang the wreath in the center of the structure, or place it on the wall at the top.
  • You can use a variety of Christmas-themed figurines and figurines, Christmas tree decorations and decorative ribbons. The main condition is that they should be combined with the rest of the decorations in the house.
  • For the overflow of light, lanterns, LED garlands and, of course, candles are used.
  • An interesting solution is the use of "tasty" decorations (various gingerbread, nuts, sweets in bright wrappers). You can put chopped fruits on top, and when dried, they can be used as an additive to tea. The aroma of the room can be given by packing spices (cinnamon, cloves, vanilla) in small bags. The smell coming from the fireplace will set the family and guests up for long, cozy tea parties.
  • It is also possible to stack a small stack of wood next to the fireplace, even if it is electric. This will create the effect of isolation from the bustling city, the illusion of solitude in a small house in the bosom of nature.

Valentine's Day

The process of decorating your home does not just lead to the desired result, it is pleasant in itself. To create a romantic mood and a holiday for your "second half", you can decorate the fireplace on February 14. Traditionally, on this day, all shades of pink and red are used, which symbolize love, tenderness and passion. You can put various figurines of angels and cupids, bouquets and sweets on the fireplace.

You can purchase various materials in advance and, combining them with those available at home, make with your own hands:

  • wreaths of flower buds;
  • garlands of hearts cut from cardboard or colored paper;
  • beautiful lettering about love and valentines of various sizes.

By Easter

For Christians, Easter is the happiest and brightest spring holiday. Unlike the Western version of jewelry, in Russia they use a lot of religious symbols reminiscent of the Resurrection of Christ. Baskets with colored eggs, baked Easter cakes and icons are placed on tables and fireplaces. However, it is not at all necessary to give up Western decorations in the form of Easter bunnies, bouquets of the first flowers and various branches, which create a joyful premonition of the coming spring.

With your own hands, you can decorate beautiful wreaths with greens and white flowers, make decoupage on candles and vases, then placing them on the mantelpiece.

Needlewomen can embroider icons with a cross or using beads, create compositions from figurines, leaves, moss and blossoming willow.

Safety engineering

The fireplace assumes an open fire. If it is not covered with a solid glass wall, then there is always a danger of fire, so it is very important to follow some simple rules when decorating the fireplace and the surrounding area.

  • It is best to choose materials that are less prone to fire: metal, glass, rubber. It is better not to hang jewelry on thin synthetic threads that ignite from a single spark. With great care, you should use plastic products, dry branches, cones, paper, very thin fabrics like cotton or satin, as well as fabrics such as felt or felt (they can smolder for a long time and imperceptibly, and then flare up sharply).
  • It is unacceptable to use jewelry hanging in dangerous proximity to the fire, especially in the absence of a protective grill. The decor is best placed above the mantel and on its surface, as well as around the fireplace. It is undesirable to put decorations on the lower tiers or on the floor in front of the fireplace, as sparks can fly through the metal grate and hit them directly (especially if paper decorations or compositions of dry grass and flowers are used as decoration).
  • It is necessary with great care to use burning candles located on the mantels or inside an artificial fireplace made of wood or cardboard. You should not put paper decorations near lighted candles or lean something directly against the candle itself.

DIY fireplace

Fireplaces in private homes are usually massive. They are decorated with stucco and wrought iron bars. A large and wide mantelpiece can hold a large number of photo frames, vases of flowers and various decorations. As for small one-room and two-room apartments, it is simply impossible to place such magnificence in them without taking up half of the used space.

For owners of a small area, an artificial fireplace will be an excellent solution.

It can be a screen with a recording of a live fire, an electric heater in the form of an antique fireplace, located against the wall, or just a fake fireplace designed to create a certain atmosphere in the room.

You can create a fireplace with your own hands. Do not throw away your old dressing table, large boxes (for example, from under the refrigerator), and even the boxes left over from the ordered pizza. All these materials can be used to make a small artificial fireplace that will delight you on long winter evenings. Of course, a cardboard fireplace will not be able to heat the room, but it will look almost like a real one and will also gather the whole family around it.

  • First you need to draw or find a finished drawing of the intended product on the Internet. Print it out and transfer to cardboard according to the dimensions you want to receive.
  • Make cuts and glue all the necessary parts to make a box with a fire pit in the middle.
  • You can make imitation of borders and stucco using elements of foam tiles and baseboards purchased at a hardware store.
  • From a large piece of Styrofoam or any other lightweight material, cut and glue the mantelpiece on top.
  • Then you can start painting the resulting fireplace. For this, water-based paint is used, which is applied in two layers. If you want to get the effect of aged paint, you must use a white drywall putty in advance.
  • After installing the structure in the selected place, you can put electronic or real candles inside, lay a garland or install a small lamp.

Beautiful examples

The fireplace is decorated in the same color scheme as the main New Year's attribute - a Christmas tree. In the same red-green tones, but with the addition of white, there is also a wreath hanging in the center above the fireplace. On the mantel itself, in addition to branches and garlands, there are red candles and white vases that connect all three colors into a single composition.

On the mantelpiece is a composition of Easter bunny figurines, painted eggs and small pots of fresh green grass.

A wreath suspended above the composition dilutes the pastel blue and white tones with a bright green spot.

Laconic fireplace decoration for Valentine's Day. A small garland and applique made of hearts in red and white have been added to the photo frame that stands over the fireplace every day. Bright color accents are made using colorful cards with words about love.

Decorating a fireplace for Christmas or March 8th is one of the elements of pleasant pre-holiday chores.creating a certain solemn mood. However, if you want a holiday, you don't have to wait until the right day of the calendar comes. You can try to arrange bouquets of flowers on the mantelpiece in anticipation of spring, hang garlands in October, or not remove the bags of spices from the fireplace throughout the year, if this cheers up and helps to create a warm and cozy campaign admiring the fire.
