A screwdriver is a tool used to screw in or unscrew bots. Curly screwdrivers can be of different types, each of which is designed to perform a specific task.

Principle of operation

The tool has an axial shaft with a shaped tip that fits into the screw head. There is a cylindrical handle at the other end. When the handle of the screwdriver is turned, it creates a torque that turns the tip with the shaft.

There are many different sizes and types of curling tools. A screwdriver is usually identified by the shape of its tip, which must fully match the recess on the head of a self-tapping screw or screw.

Of the types of curly screwdrivers available on the modern market, the following types can be distinguished:

  • cruciform;
  • improved cruciform;
  • hex;
  • six-pointed;
  • square;
  • triangular.

The cruciform is most widespread, since the slots are very conveniently located in its design.

During the operation of the tip, it demonstrates excellent adhesion to the surface of the screw head, which is why it enters the surface better and more firmly, without a gap.

The improved Phillips screwdriver looks the same as the previous model, only it has an extra slot that fits between each span. Bolts and screws are tightened even more tightly - especially often such a tool is used when assembling furniture.

Hex screwdrivers are called so because they have a six-edged tip. Each one fits snugly against the slots of the fasteners - that is why the best effect is achieved during the use of the tool. Use a screwdriver to assemble furniture and bicycles.

On store shelves, you can find a square tip; it is used when working with computer equipment. There are also triangular splines, which resemble a geometric figure, whose blades are at an equal distance from each other.

Marking

Screwdrivers can be supplied in a set with replaceable bits, which is very convenient and allows you to have everything you need close at hand. Each has its own markings: as a rule, these are letters and numbers. The cruciform is signed with capital RN.

Such a screwdriver may have a different number:

  • 000 - 1.5 mm.;
  • 00 - 1.9 mm .;
  • 0 - 2 mm.

Advanced cruciforms are labeled as PZ or PX. On the six-pointed ones you can see the inscription TORX and the letters E4-E44. Hexes just say HEX; on those with a Robertson square tip, if it is triangular - a Tri-Wing.

How to find out the size

The user must match the screw size with the screwdriver size. The Phillips blade has a blunt tip, and the screw slots will bend where they intersect. The Torx blade has a star end for screws in appliances and garden equipment.

Measure the standard slot of the screw head. You can take a tape measure or a ruler: if you use a screwdriver that is too wide and too thick, it is not possible to install it in the slot. When the user picks up an instrument that is too narrow or too thin, it will slide off easily.

To install screws in inconvenient places, special curly screwdrivers are used, choosing short ones when space is limited.

It is important to find the right size instrument to achieve maximum results.

How to choose

Although there are a dozen different curved screwdriver tips, the DIYer typically only uses two: Robertson and Phillips. The tip should fit snugly against the screw socket and should be about the same width as the head diameter. If screws are used that have a flattened head, it is important that the tip does not exceed the width of the hole in the head.... Having a tool of the correct size, which is necessary for the task at hand, prevents damage to the screw, facilitates installation and allows you to keep the screwdriver intact for a long time.

Professionals recommend buying a set of nibs so that you can carefully select the size and thickness... Inexpensive ones will not last long: as a rule, they are made of low-quality alloy, which bends during operation. In this case, a tool with a damaged tip will subsequently be useless. Quality screwdrivers are sold with a manufacturer's warranty, which makes it possible to replace the shank or handle free of charge.

You should not buy screwdrivers that have chrome tips, as the coating will wear out quickly. A quality tool must have a hardened shank.

Pay particular attention to the ergonomics of the handle, as this plays an important role during operation. Uncomfortable and not rubberized will rub your hand, slip out, it is inconvenient to work with it.

Besides quality and comfort, there are three things to consider when buying screwdrivers:

  • slot: the most common are 1/8, 1/4, 3/16, 5/16, and 3/8;
  • Philips: the most common are sizes 1 to 3, where each number corresponds to the diameter of the screw size;
  • Robertson: Five sizes available, but only two are used for most household tasks.
