Today, on the market for tools and accessories, there is a large number of hacksaws, which differ not only in their appearance, but also in characteristics. In addition, they can be divided into those used by professionals and those used by home craftsmen. Each such saw has its own characteristics. And you definitely need to know all the information about them before choosing.

Description

The hacksaw blade itself is a fairly thin strip made of steel. Therefore, it is considered the most vulnerable part in the saw. Just one wrong move can break the tool. In addition, small teeth are located at the edge of the blade, with the help of which all the work is carried out. It is very important that they are not only wedge-shaped, but also properly hardened.... In the future, this will increase the lifespan of the blade.

If we consider the standard sizes of canvases, then according to GOST they should be from 24 to 30 centimeters in length. As for such a parameter as the pitch of the teeth, this indicator should range from 8 to 12 millimeters. The thickness of the canvas ranges from 0.64 to 0.80 millimeters.

What are they?

There are two types of hacksaw blades. Some are used for manual cutting, others for machine cutting.

For manual

These canvases can be divided into 2 main subtypes by size.

  • Double canvases... Their total length of the canvas should be no more than 31 centimeters and 15 millimeters. In this case, the thickness should not exceed 0.80 millimeters.
  • Single canvases... The length should be in the range from 26.5 to 31.5 centimeters, and its thickness should be 0.63 millimeters.

The range of hacksaw blades that are produced in Russia is limited to this. However, in specialized stores, you can buy others, foreign production.

For example, diamond-coated blades are very common, which can even be used for working on ceramics.

There are also canvases that are coated with tungsten or tungsten carbide spraying.... At first glance, such a hacksaw seems to be very sturdy, but you need to be very careful when working with it. This type of blade is extremely sensitive to voltage changes.. Therefore, they are not advised to cut metal. These hacksaws are not at all suitable for cutting rails, but they are a good option for longitudinal cutting of wood.

If you need a saw for working on tiles, then you should buy a frame hacksaw all with the same tungsten coating.

Handy pocket strings are handy for trekking... They are used by tourists, survivalists or military personnel. Working with such a saw is always long and painstaking. After all, the canvas here is very thin, which means that you can neither make sudden movements, nor press hard on the hacksaw... You need to move gently from bottom to top. First, small branches are sawn off, and then the log is sawn. But if such a saw is dull, then you can not throw it away, but turn it into a homemade trap for animals, which will be useful to any hunter.

For mechanical cutting

In order to automate the process, craftsmen use a hacksaw cut-off machine. This tool is designed for cutting channels, pipes and other metal products.Accordingly, the blade for such a tool should be slightly thicker and much stronger.

Types of steel

Modern hand and power hacksaws are made from several types of materials. The choice depends on the purpose for which the tool will be used.

Consider the main materials that are used to make the canvas.

Carbon steel

This material is known to be the most brittle. This, of course, does not give him popularity.

You should only choose carbon steel blades if you have to cut soft or non-ferrous metals.

However, the quality of such a hacksaw depends not only on the characteristics of the material, but also on the processing method. If no rules were violated during production, then even such a saw will turn out to be durable.

Alloy steel

This version of canvases is popular exclusively only in our country. Foreign manufacturers practically do not pay attention to it. Nevertheless, such steel is an order of magnitude better than the one described above, at least because it is more technologically advanced.

Steel alloyed with vanadium or tungsten is more suitable for working with hard materials.

High speed steel

Although this type of material is recognized as the best, it has several disadvantages. For a start, all the same about the pros. HSS blades are very sharp, and their teeth are much stronger than all other hacksaws. But at the same time, the material still remains fragile. Another drawback is that the price is too high.

However, a canvas made of such steel is worth its money. After all, if you buy a saw at a more affordable price, then it will break down very quickly.

Bimetallic blades

Recently, bimetallic blades are actively replacing all their "competitors". This is a relatively new invention. At the heart of the canvas is strong, but elastic steel. Usually carbonaceous is used. The cold-rolled strip is processed by electron beam welding, after which the teeth are cut into it.

This type of welding is used because it is with its help that the metal can be heated instantly. The teeth do not become more brittle, which is also very good. The cost of canvases made of such a new material is the same as in the previous case, so they are likely to soon oust their competitors.

How to choose?

The main parameter that you need to pay attention to when buying a hacksaw blade is its size. A person should be comfortable working with such a tool.

It is also necessary to understand in advance which metal the saw will come into contact with most often. How the saw teeth should be depends on this. For example, a saw for metal cutting has sharp triangle teeth. The tooth pitch is 0.8 millimeters.

When working with thin pipes or non-ferrous metal, it is worth paying attention to the blades, where the pitch between the teeth is a millimeter. If you have to deal with more durable materials (for example, pipes with thick walls), then this parameter should be increased to 1.25 millimeters.

Sometimes it happens that in the process of work, the hacksaw blade wedges. To prevent this from happening, the canvas must be properly divorced.... If divorce is not provided by the manufacturer, then you must do it yourself immediately after purchase. You can carefully separate each tooth separately or do it in groups of three. It all depends on what kind of material you have to deal with.

If there is an opportunity to buy high-quality hacksaw blades, then it is better to take a whole set at once.

Operating tips

Very often, the service life of a tool does not depend on where and from whom it was purchased, but on how it was looked after. The rules for caring for hacksaw blades are very simple, so you shouldn't break them.

  • When working with hard and brittle materials, it is recommended to keep the blade wet, constantly wiping it with a damp cloth, or gently grease the teeth with grease.
  • It is also important to hold the saw correctly.Even when working with thin or sheet materials, at least three prongs should be involved in the work.
  • When working with sticky or soft materials, you also need to make sure that the hacksaw is prepared in advance. Ideally, the teeth should be simply rubbed with soap.
  • A small hacksaw is not a machine tool, so you need to work with it slower and more accurately. There is no need to make any sudden movements. You need to try to save your strength. And it is also important to consider that any, even a fairly strong canvas, is afraid of sudden jerks.
  • If it becomes more and more difficult to work with the old canvas, sharpening will save the master. Sharpened teeth will handle any material more easily. If this does not help, then you need to insert a new blade into the holder. Almost anyone can install it.
  • Proper care is also very important. After work, you need to get rid of metal or wood shavings and other dirt. This can be done with a regular brush.
  • And the last important point - you can not put anything on a hacksaw, because it is made of a very fragile material.

Summing up, we can say that there are actually as many types of hacksaw blades as there are materials for cutting. Therefore, you need to clearly know all their features, choosing the right pair. Then even a thin "string" will serve its owner for a very long time.

In the next video, you will find a little trick of using ordinary hacksaw blades.
