Features of extractors for unscrewing nuts and bolts are in choosing the correct design, different sizes used for threaded connectors of different diameters, and the conditions in which they are found.

The fracture can be at different levels, with free space for driving a wedge, or its absence. The use of a special tool occurs in cases where it is impossible to remove a bolt or nut by conventional methods, using familiar tools.

What it is?

In special sources, an extractor for unscrewing nuts is called a useful and convenient tool that is used when it is necessary to remove fasteners, for example, broken bolts in car parts. - it is in this unit that there are many threaded connections, fixing devices and parts.

  • The cause of breakage can be variable circumstances that led to deformation or damage to the metal. - breaking, abrasion of the thread, unreliable fixation, low-quality metal, incorrect use of fasteners in relation to dimensions or holes.
  • The principle of operation, as well as the choice of the appropriate type, can be determined by the reason that caused such a need (rust, cracks and chips, bubbles and tears).
  • Fasteners can be damaged at high temperatures (sticking)tightening with the wrong wrench.
  • Sometimes the extractor is called a kind of borax, but this definition does not quite correspond to all varieties, produced by manufacturers in response to the demands and needs of the instrument market.

The description invariably contains a mention of the variety of design features and applications. Each of the distinguished types has its own characteristics, pluses and minuses, but in the harsh reality it turns out that a simple design and type of model perfectly manifest themselves in different situations. When the head is flush, cut above the level of the part, or fractured at some distance from the surface, such a tool is simply necessary.

In the instructions, you may not find a mention that the extractor is used for lapped fasteners, however, the presence of dexterity and some nuances will allow you to successfully cope with a broken fastener without tedious manipulations with auxiliary tools that are not so adapted to a particular process.

On sale, you can find a set of socket heads or a separate tool from the working part and the shank, with which it is attached to a die holder, wrench or screwdriver.

The presence of different types is due to the intended purpose, but it is better to purchase a set of extractors of different diameters. This allows you to work with different sizes of threaded connections - from M1 to M16... For turning out, devices with opposite cutting edges can be used - the left-hand thread at the bolt implies an extractor with a right-hand direction. This applies to a bolt without a head, a spiral-screw type of tool. Buying a kit for damaged fasteners will not only save you money (it's cheaper than buying each tool separately). You need to decide what type of damage you have to work with more often: the external one is useful for protruding above the surface and large in size, inside it there are special sharp edges.

The outer one is useful for bolt heads with lapped edges, and for a damaged nut, if it leaves room for maneuver. In addition to the types listed below, you can find differentiation into external and internal extractors (for the operation of protruding or deepened breakdowns). In the first case, sharp edges work inside the extractor head, which transfer the rotation energy, in the second - due to hammering or screwing into the body of the damaged bolt. Internal tools are classified as single-sided and double-sided. The first ones can be with a working area in the form of a drill (cone) or in the form of a wedge.

Wedge-shaped

They were named after the appearance of the working area.... Such extractors can be tetrahedral or flat. The most common and recognized traditional shape is the faceted cone. It is used when you can drill the hardware, then just insert the extractor into the finished hole. The complexity of the application lies in the accuracy of the drill - an incorrectly made hole can lead to tool breakage due to an incorrectly distributed load.

If the bolt has an offset axis of rotation, the wedge tool will be useless. Much of the success of the process is determined precisely by the correct selection of the tool. Pliers are not recommended for using socket heads.

Rod

Their description is invariably laconic, although sometimes you can find an unprofessional statement that this type works on the same principle as the wedge-shaped and spiral-helical. However, in the use of an extractor with a working part in the form of a sharp-edged rod, there are some peculiarities: unscrewing occurs with the help of a second auxiliary tool - a wrench of a suitable diameter.

To insert a tool with a rod and sharp edges, most often you also need a drilled hole in the body of the hardware.

Spiral screw

Such models are consistently characterized as a reliable and efficient type of tool. They are produced with a cone-shaped thread that can be cut in different directions - to the right or to the left.

The principle of application is extremely simple - screwing into a pre-drilled hole. After jamming, you can safely unscrew along with the bolt for which it is used. Experts advise using a wrench, which will come in handy for repairs and for other locksmith manipulations, clamping or rotating tools.

How to use it correctly?

Broken hardware is not the most pleasant phenomenon during repair work. It can be located in an open or hard-to-reach place. Starting to work with it, you need not only to realize the need to use an extractor, but also to correctly determine with the help of which type it is better to carry out the removal. Then it is enough to use a well-tried algorithm and useful advice from professionals.

  • Drill out broken hardware you still have to: the hole should be strictly in the center, and the drill diameter should be less than the same parameter of the part.
  • If hardware with cut edges, it is impractical to use a spiral screw extractor, it is easier to pull it out with a wedge-shaped tool.
  • Unscrew the bolt that is flush with the surface, it is easier with a center punch that allows you to accurately determine the center point for drilling, so that there is no axis offset.
  • Tighten the recessed bolt well below the surface optimally using a guide sleeve... It will also come in handy if the break point is located above the fastener.
  • Ease of work is often due to the presence of aids and tools... Therefore, the advice to purchase kits is not accidental.

The success of the actions taken depends on the correct choice of the extractor... And it's not only about its type, but also about its diameter and method of application. Therefore, it is better to purchase a set where there are extractors with various nozzles, wrench sleeves and similar devices for guiding the drill, which should be strictly in the center of the bolt, nut or stud. In retail chains, there are many gadgets from leading manufacturers, expensive and cheap, convenient and functional.

Price is not always the main component that guarantees the purchase of a quality instrument. You need to carefully study all the priorities, and purchase the products of the desired type.
