Almost every craftsman at least once faced such an unpleasant moment in his work as a breakage of a screw or screw in a product. In such situations, it is almost impossible to simply get an element (for example, from a wall) without damaging the structure.

Sometimes the scrapping occurs in the middle, and the screw only goes halfway into the product. What to do in such cases? In order to facilitate the work of the craftsmen, a special device was invented that would help to get the broken fragment out of the wall or any other surface. This tool is called an extractor.

Species overview

To remove any stuck element, they grab it with something and then try to pull it out with the help of force. At this moment, when using this particular method, most often the started thread flies off under the force of resistance. And you won't be able to use this hole.

Extractors for turning heads facilitate this process without breaking the thread. Removal of screws, screws and broken studs is carried out exactly along the thread along which they originally entered the product.

Nowadays, almost all companies produce whole sets, for example, of 5 items with holders or a knob.

Sets are subdivided according to the principle of operation. Extractors can be used to remove the packing. Then the set will be marked "gland", or a set of special terminals for connectors.

The kits are trying to be functional and versatile. According to frequent surveys, manufacturers noted for themselves that the most requested models are tools in the range from M1 to M16. Sometimes the work requires a size of both 17 mm and 19 mm. These extractors can be purchased separately from the kit. Large diameters are not only suitable for large nut extraction work, but also for plumbing pipe debris.

Basically, this tool is used only in emergency cases, taking into account that the density of the extracted element is high enough, and it will not crack under the influence of the extractor.

Extractors are made of hard metal alloys, and the tip cuts thinly and quickly using carbon steel. On the back of the sets, markings like S-2 or chrome-plated CrMo are written. This means a good and strong alloy.

In cheap kits, the marking of alloys is usually not written or incorrect data is indicated. It is possible to understand that the materials are of poor quality through several applications.

In terms of weight, the contractions differ not only from each other, but also in the principle of operation.

For internal work, extractors have the following parameters:

  • length 25-150 mm;

  • diameter 1.5-25 mm;

  • weight 8-150 g.

And also there is a type of extractors for outdoor use, and their characteristics are higher:

  • length 40-80 mm;

  • diameter 15-26 mm;

  • weight 100-150 g.

Weight and dimensions may vary from kit to kit.

It is especially worth paying attention to what the attachments are reinforced. If for work with the holder, then they are slightly longer and lighter in weight, and if for use with a screwdriver, then they are slightly heavier and shorter.

Extractors are subdivided according to the type of work.

  • One-sided. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that only one handpiece is suitable for work. The working part is presented in the form of a wedge or a cone. It can be sharpened for both right-hand and left-hand threads (in sets, one type of thread is preferred). The dimensional step is rather small - 2 inches.The opposite side, which is clamped in the clip, resembles a small ponytail divided into 4 edges. There are also hexagons.

  • Bilateral. They differ in that both tips are working. The first end is designed as a short drill and the second is tapered with a left-hand thread. They are small in size and not very heavy. Outwardly, it is easy to confuse them with a screwdriver bit.

Some kits come with special guides to help you find the center. They increase the efficiency of the contact between the drill and the bolt, evenly distribute the force and minimize the risk of damage to the main product, exclude the possibility of making mistakes at the time of work.

And also the kit includes:

  • cranks;

  • adapter sleeves;

  • spanners;

  • drill.

Extractors also differ in the form of execution.

  • Wedge-shaped (they are also conical). There is no thread on the cone at all. They work according to the drilling principle. The diameter of the cone should be less than the fragment to be removed. The nozzle is hammered into a broken bolt for full engagement, and then unscrewed along the thread.

  • Rod. They have a shortened working part and straight edges with perpendicular markers in the form of slots. Externally, they are similar to taps for threads, and have an identical principle of operation.
  • Spiral screw. They are especially popular and in great demand. The material for manufacturing is alloy steel, which increases strength and durability, as well as price. But this species has a number of advantages. The attachments are really not afraid of hard work, and are also used for the most difficult situations, and handle them with ease.

Popular manufacturers

There are a large number of different kits on the market that can be used for certain jobs. In terms of external data and functionality, they are almost identical to each other. The sets contain 5 single-sided items, sizes from M3 to M11.

The set includes a plastic container in which all the extractors are fixed. The holder must be purchased separately.

Most often on the market you can find products from manufacturers such as:

  • "Bison";

  • WIEDERKRAFT;

  • VIRA;

  • STAYER;

  • Partner;

  • "Autodelo".

Instructions for use

Any tool requires proper use for good performance and long life.

If you imagine a situation where a bolt breaks off and gets stuck in the wall, the procedure to be followed is as follows.

  • All the necessary tools should be prepared: hammer, drills, extractors, drill.

  • Using the guides, you need to find the center of the product. If they are not there, then you can calculate it manually. This requires a hammer and center punch. The application of the center is considered one of the most important points. After all, if you move a little to the side, then you can go in the wrong direction with a drill and drill the main thread.

  • At the selected center mark, it is necessary to drill a hole with a drill, into which the extractor will then be placed. The nozzle is driven into the recess with a hammer until it stops (if we are talking about a wedge-shaped one). The screw goes inside the product only half, and then deepens with the help of a ram holder. All rotation is counterclockwise. The position should not move away or tilt to the side.

  • To get the extractor out of the fragment, it is necessary to clamp the fragment in a vice or pliers and gently twist it, rotating it clockwise.
