Drilling wood is the procedure that is required in almost every repair, construction process. The main thing is to get a good quality drill.

Peculiarities

When buying a modern drill, the consumer also becomes the owner of a set of wood drills. Usually these are the same products, which are characterized by different lengths and diameters. The number of items in a set can be different, often there are 8 pieces. The set always contains a spiral device, which is characterized by a diameter of 3 to 52 millimeters. A quality tool has a sharp edge. It prevents slipping when working.

Drills with a diameter of 10 mm are equipped with a hex shank, so that there is no twisting during the procedure. The user should also be aware of the number of revolutions during drilling that corresponds to the diameter of the machine. When working with hard material, for a tool that is characterized by a diameter of 16-25 mm, it is worth adhering to 500 revolutions. Increasing the speed is only possible when working with soft rocks.

The length of a drill in wood directly depends on its diameter. There are no products that are long and thin.

The thinner the drill, the shorter it is, otherwise it may break. High-quality products must be perfectly sharpened, thanks to this, deformations during work can be avoided.

Each of the drill models in the set has a specific purpose for a certain type of rock. When working with solid wood, for example, oak, alder, cedar, it is worth using a 20 mm drill.

Varieties

For high-quality drilling in wood, you need to choose the right drill. Currently, the user can choose from several types of products.

  • Crowned. The main purpose of this type of drill is the process of cutting through holes that can provide an optimal seating area for the socket. Attachments that have a diameter of up to 65 millimeters are usually equipped with a shank with a diameter of 19 mm. For large specimens, the fasteners have a diameter of 32 mm. The number of toothed segments of the ring is influenced by the size of the bit for the tool, usually it is 2-16 teeth. The drill has found its application in the formation of clean cuts, which are characterized by the smoothness of the inner part of the grooves. At the end of the workflow, the user does not have to make improvements or remove burrs.

The use of crown rings shortens the workflow and increases its quality. Drilling is carried out without dust, noise, and the working process is comfortable.

  • Feathers. This type of device can be called a compromise, since it is characterized by optimal weight and at the same time makes a hole with a large diameter. The drilling procedure in this case is carried out using a "feather", which has the desired diameter at the end of the rod. The modern market offers fixtures with a diameter of 10-55 mm. The disadvantage of such a product is the lack of outlets for chips, so the workflow for the production of deep holes is difficult. Pen drills have found their application in drilling boards of small thickness, fiberboard, particle board. For this purpose, the release of devices that have a length of 15-20 cm is carried out.

In order for these devices to sit firmly in the chuck, the products are equipped with hex shanks. Such a drill is considered a suitable option for making a hole for a lock in doors.

  • Forstner. This type of drill is intended for precise drilling of blind holes with different diameters at a shallow depth. These fixtures are made of steel and are also equipped with carbide inserts to increase tool life and productivity. The cutting edge cuts through the fibers at the edge of the hole before the main blade sinks into the wood. Chipping does not occur in this procedure. The resulting hole has smooth walls and a flat bottom.

These devices are useful for making holes for dipping candlesticks, installing hinges for furniture.

How to choose?

The main rule when choosing a drill for wood is based on the fact that it should have a structure that is harder than the surface to be machined. For drilling wood, you can use the simplest fixture, which is made of durable steel. When buying a product, it is also worth taking into account the type of work performed. The dimensions of the tool are also influenced by the mass of the material on which the work is performed. The more the latter weighs, the longer and more powerful the drill should be.

At home, drills have found their use, which are characterized by a diameter of no more than 12 mm. And also it is worth remembering that the specificity of the work performed affects the diameter of the drill. When buying drills, do not overlook their functionality. This can be verified by drilling a small hole in the wood. When choosing a set of drills for wood, you need to pay attention to the appearance of the fixtures.

The good quality of the product is evidenced by the absence of scratches, chips and defects.

The color of the products indicates certain impurities in the metal. For example, if the drills are yellow, this indicates the presence of titanium dioxide, which contributes to the long service life of the fixtures. Gray surface drills contain aluminum alloys, they are usually disposable and are used for thin wood. The strongest ones are black-faced drills, which can be used when working with coniferous wood.
