Growing indoor bamboo at home is a hobby that has recently become more and more popular. Today, many types of compact and at the same time fast-growing plant are known, among which varnishes stand out especially. It is worth considering its main characteristics and landing features.

Description

Lucky (aka Dracaena Sandera) is a fairly stable and hardy variety with a unique trait. The culture is able to grow without soil, exclusively in water. Therefore, bamboo can often be found in gardening stores in this form. Key characteristics of dracaena:

  • powerful and long stems;
  • large leaves of bright green color;
  • often located shoots.

Varnish grows pretty quickly for its kind, so it is liked by flower growers. In addition, the plant is suitable even for amateurs, as it does not require special care.

You can grow a crop both in water and in fertile soil in a pot.

Landing

There are at least two ways you can plant and germinate bamboo. Basically, the culture is grown in a glass of water, where the plant quickly takes root and begins to actively develop the root system first, followed by the stems and leaves. You can also grow homemade bamboo in pots filled with special soil mixtures from gardening shops.

Location

When choosing a place for planting a bamboo crop, preference is given to warm and sunny areas where the plant will be comfortable.

Additional recommendations:

  • light should be diffused;
  • it is impossible for the plant to stand where there are often drafts;
  • when planting in a pot, it is worth taking care of the drainage system;
  • the soil for the plant should contain peat, sand, and fertilizers in the form of phosphorus, nitrogen or bird droppings.

You need to repot the bamboo regularly. At first, the procedure is performed every spring, over time, the number of transplants is reduced to 1 time in 2-3 years. During transplanting, it is not recommended to fertilize the soil for three weeks, as well as water the stems.

Soil or water

As already noted, varnishes can be grown both in water and in the ground. It is worth taking a closer look at both options. If you plan to land in the water, then you must:

  1. place the sprout in a transparent vase filled with warm water;
  2. make sure that the water covers the roots by 1-2 cm;
  3. place the vessel in a warm and sunny place.

The advantage of planting in water is that you do not need to water the crop additionally, as well as apply the first fertilization time. If you wish, you can plant the varnishes in a glass vase with a hydrogel or another pretty vessel if no further transplant is planned.

Recently, more and more often bamboo is planted in fountains, where the roots of the plant are attached to the bottom with the help of small stones. In this case, it is recommended to renew the aquatic environment at least once a week and add nutrient components in the form of solutions.

When growing in soil, you should first take care of the soil composition. Florists recommend opting for earthen mixtures created specifically for planting bamboo crops. These formulations are sold in gardening stores and often contain flower soil or sand.

Additional recommendations for providing comfortable conditions for growing bamboo in the ground look like this.

  • Small stones or brick chips should be laid out at the bottom of the pot.This will be a drainage that will absorb excess moisture and prevent root rot.
  • Do not flood the plant with water so that it does not die.
  • Dracaena in a pot must be put in place with diffused lighting. Only under such conditions will bamboo begin to actively grow and release leaves. In addition, the plant will take on a pretty bright green hue.

If necessary, varnishes are able to survive in less favorable conditions. But in this case, growth will be slow, and the plant itself will be sluggish. In addition, the characteristic color of the culture will disappear, and the stems will become more elongated.

Dracaena is quite popular among landscape and interior designers, it is often used as the main element of decor.

It is not necessary to put the plant on the windowsill; you can place a pot or vase of water anywhere in the room.

Care

In order for the bamboo to grow quickly and please with its attractive appearance, it is worth taking care of the culture.

Watering

Dracaena Sandera is very fond of water, so it is recommended to pay special attention to watering the plant and not overdo it. Varnishes should be watered every 2 days with a little water to prevent drying out of the soil and provide the crop with the required moisture for active growth. It is worth noting that if the flower does not have enough liquid, then it will begin to dry out and eventually die.

A huge plus of growing bamboo in water is that there is no need for regular watering. It is only important to ensure that the water level remains at a height of up to 8 cm, where the roots of the plant fall. A large volume of liquid will lead to rotting of the root system, and a lack of liquid will cause the flower to dry out.

The second point to consider is the quality of the water introduced into the soil or vase. It must be thoroughly filtered or completely free of any suspended matter or impurities. Only in this case you can not worry about the growth of the flower and its good development.

As for the humidity of the air, you shouldn't worry too much here. The plant will feel comfortable in any conditions, but if desired, you can periodically spray the stems or wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.

If the culture grows in water, then the last actions are not required at all, since the vase will serve as a moisturizer. In this case, a rag will only be needed to remove dust.

Top dressing

Fertilizers are applied about twice a month if the dracaena is grown in a pot. In the case of planting varnishes in the water, fertilizers are recommended to be applied immediately to the vase, renewing the water every 1-2 days. As top dressing, mainly liquid formulations are used, which are suitable for the care of ornamental crops. When using such drugs, the composition should be carefully studied so as not to harm the roots or other elements of the plant. At the same time, flower growers are advised to dilute concentrates in a smaller volume in order to observe how the bamboo will react to feeding.

Leaf fertilizers are especially relevant for dracaena, but it is periodically recommended to replace them with root preparations. Often, flower growers use solutions for spraying flower elements, performing the procedure in the morning or in the evening so that the bright sun does not burn the leaves.

Transfer

The first transplant should be done 30 days after purchasing the bamboo from the store. The plant must be transplanted into a pot or vase that is 1 cm larger than the previous container. When transplanting into a new pot, the procedure is as follows.

  1. A drainage layer up to 3 cm thick is first poured onto the bottom of the new container. The rest is covered with soil, the composition of which is suitable for planting dracaena.
  2. After the plant is carefully removed from the old pot.
  3. The third stage involves moving the flower to a new pot. The remaining space should be filled with earth and carefully tamped to allow moisture to pass through the earth.

Thus, the transplant takes place in just three simple steps, so even a novice florist can handle the procedure.

Pruning

Sandera grows regularly - this is her feature. In this case, it does not matter where the flower is: in the soil or in the water. If the stems begin to stretch up too actively and at the same time do not form side shoots, you should trim the top.

How to make a spiral?

When buying compact bamboo, many are wondering how to make a spiral so that the plant looks unusual and attracts the eye. You can easily achieve what you want if you follow the basic recommendations. The first option involves the use of a special curved tube, which is wrapped around the stem of a young plant. Thanks to this element, it is possible to give the shoot the necessary configuration in advance, since it remembers the given shape and continues its growth in accordance with it. The straw can be removed over time.

The second option is the bending of the still green shoots, which are then rolled around the stem and attached to it with a dense rope or wire. As soon as the elements of the plant gain strength and become stronger, they can be untied.

How to propagate?

Often, when growing bamboo, there is a desire to propagate the plant. This can be done in two ways. The first option involves the use of seeds.

Breeding scheme:

  1. seeds are selected and soaked in water until March, until they germinate;
  2. ready-made seedlings are transferred to fertilized soil, consisting of sand, soil and drainage layer;
  3. every day the earth is sprayed with special compounds and water;
  4. after the emergence of seedlings, containers or test tubes are covered with transparent material to organize the greenhouse effect;
  5. the pots are placed in a warm and sunny place;
  6. the equipped greenhouse is ventilated 1-3 times a day.

When the seeds have completely taken root, germinate and form about 2-3 leaves, the bamboo can be transplanted to a permanent place of residence: in a larger pot or a vase filled with water. Until then, containers should be kept covered.

The second way by which it will be possible to propagate a culture is cuttings, the simplest option.

Stages:

  1. a small young shoot is pinched off from the mother plant;
  2. the cutting is placed in a container with warm and clean water until the root system appears;
  3. the plant is again transplanted into water and the algorithm is followed as described above.

If you properly care for the plant, you will be able to increase the number of dracaena in the house. Particular attention should be paid to the air temperature, since the leaves of varnishes can curl and acquire a painful brown tint from low rates. Also, too bright lighting that can burn through the sheet plates is not recommended.

Why does it turn yellow?

Sometimes flower growers are faced with an unpleasant phenomenon - yellowing of the leaves of the plant. The following reasons can cause such a nuisance.

  • The soil is too dense. In this case, it is worth loosening the soil.
  • Poor drainage. Leads to rotting of the roots, due to which the plant ceases to receive the required amount of nutrients and slowly dies.
  • Pests. Dracaena is mainly attacked by thrips, spider mites and springtails.

Any problem requires an immediate solution. It is recommended to carefully examine the plant for the presence of insects. If they were found, it is necessary to start removing the already affected elements and treating the flower with special compounds.

If the leaves turn yellow due to poor drainage, then this can be determined by the smell that the earth will begin to emit. Then it is worth replacing the soil, as well as additionally fertilizing the soil.

It is worth noting that such problems arise quite rarely, and if the basic recommendations for care are followed, they can be completely avoided.

Interior use

Bamboo varnishes are a plant that is quite popular among interior and landscape designers, which is often used to decorate various compositions. The curly stalks of bamboo, intertwining and twisting, form unusual shapes that attract attention. The main advantage of the culture is the ability to grow without soil, so you can often find bamboo in a small fountain or vase.

Compact dracaena is an exotic flower that will look pretty in oriental interiors. Therefore, it is not surprising that the plant often flickers in various legends of the East and, according to most Asians, has magical and healing properties.

For example, many believe that bamboo can become a talisman if wrapped in a yellow or red satin ribbon. If you put a bronze statuette of an animal near the flower, you can enhance the effect and attract good luck to your side.

Before buying a dracaena, it is recommended to carefully study the symbolism of the plant, as well as familiarize yourself with the basics of feng shui. Perhaps the right location and use of the flower will help you find good luck, health or love.
