The exit from the hallway to other rooms of the house or apartment must be carefully thought out, otherwise the positive impression may disappear even if all other corners of the dwelling are beautifully decorated.

What it is?

The arch in the hallway is an excellent option for zoning space without using doors. Design professionals note that it can play a bright (in every sense) role in the interior, if you use good finishing materials.

Mostly arched structures are designed to "revive" small hallways in small-sized dwellings, however, in private houses of a large area, they show themselves quite well.

In order for the arch in the apartment to help achieve the goal and not create problems, you need to clearly formulate the task. Most often, it is required to divide the space and at the same time not complicate the passage from one part to another. If the room is large, arches serve as an additional means of expressing the idea of the interior. Then they are made more decorative than functional.

Varieties

Arches of a classic format (semicircular) are often mounted between the hall and the hallway. Even the latest fashion trends do not make them less in demand. Such elements are outwardly restrained and emphatically solid, they can fit into the most intricate interior. If you need to combine an entrance hall with a kitchen in a short time, there is nothing better than a portal configuration.

The Art Nouveau arch is a segment of a circle; there is an angle between its arch and the main wall. This option allows, while maintaining the severity of straight forms, to make the look a little more plastic. Another advantage is that insufficiently high ceilings will not become an obstacle to the realization of your idea. The shape of the ellipse is not striking, but at the same time it is perceived visually as very pleasant.

At the exit from the corridor, trapezoid-shaped arches are sometimes made - this is a bright and unusual solution that looks very dynamic. Do not be afraid of special difficulties, because decorative sewing of the corners of ordinary doorways allows you to do the work quickly and efficiently.

If you want to form a more original interior, you can use a pointed arch (concave or convex). Associations with the Middle East and Arabian old tales will add a sense of romance and mystery. However, such designs should not be introduced into the usual European interiors, as they can get a frankly ridiculous look.

Beautiful arches in the hallway do not necessarily belong to one of the described types. There are also completely unique solutions that will emphasize your originality and subtlety of aesthetic perception. Adding columns, combining two or three arches instead of one, combining the corners of a structure with built-in wardrobes, a symbolic wooden imitation of an arch are just a few examples of what they can be.

The connection of the passage to the bar counter helps to increase the practicality of the design. In small rooms, such a step will save space, free up part of the kitchen for other purposes.

Finishing options

In order to avoid serious mistakes when designing arches, you need to understand the styles that you decided to use in the project. The range of possible decoration methods is very large and among them there are those that do not require large expenses.

  • Wallpaper. Wallpapering allows you to create a wide variety of colors, as well as apply original patterns and textures.Decide immediately whether the arch will be an integral part of the room, visually inseparable from it, or it will turn out to be an expressive accent. Keep in mind that no tricks of manufacturers can solve the root problem of any wallpaper - its insufficient service life. Therefore, it does not make much sense to use them in the hallway, since over time you will still have to often change them.
  • Stone. Decorative artificial stone is obviously more practical and more convenient, it is strong enough, it is not difficult to take care of it. Low weight, carefully designed shape and ready-made corner pieces allow you not to waste a lot of time on installation. If desired, you can both reproduce the style of natural stones, and imitate high-quality brickwork. The design is not limited by anything except your imagination and aesthetic taste. If you like, you can stone both the outer perimeter and the inner cuts.
  • Dye. There are times when neither artificial stone nor bright wallpaper helps create the desired impression. Or they seem to be helping, but they will obviously look unnatural. In such a situation, it is worth resorting to a universal and neutral solution - painting. In addition, it will save you a lot of money and time. Preparation for painting will require the very minimum. If the cover is damaged or you no longer like it, it will only take a few hours to fix the matter.

Materials (edit)

The choice of material is no less important, because it is he who determines what the appearance of the created structure can be, how functional and durable it will be.

  • Drywall. The indisputable advantage of drywall is its versatility, the ability to create elements of various shapes. In addition, it is very cheap and easy to decorate. Please note that under the influence of water, strong shocks and impacts, gypsum plasterboards can deform and lose their visual appeal.
  • Wood. Putting a curly wooden arch in the living room is not a bad idea at all. Wood is quite popular, it is used as the main structural material or for individual decorative elements (at the customer's choice). A serious drawback is the high cost of many types of wood, a high risk of scratches and other minor defects. They can be caused not only by dogs, cats or children, but even quite adults (in a hurry or being scattered).
  • Stone. Using stone, you can emphasize the traditional nature of the arched elements and at the same time give them an antique, medieval (Gothic) look. Minus - stone elements look good only in large rooms, and if there is little space, they are perceived much worse. It is also important that the stone is expensive, the manufacture of the arch itself is a little cheaper.
  • Plastic. Plastic structures illustrate the modernity and freshness of the interior. With their help, it is easy to realize the most stylish futuristic idea. The flexibility and variety of colors allows for exclusive design of the aisles. Designers recommend using plastic in small urban youth-style apartments. Of the additional accessories and decorations, built-in lighting is most appropriate.

The negative side of synthetic materials is the impossibility of using them in a cozy family home.

And even if you fundamentally want to live alone, do not forget about the low environmental friendliness of plastic. The general conclusion is simple: you need to think not only about the appearance, but also about the safety and stylistic correspondence of the future arch to the entire room.

How to choose?

It should be noted that regardless of the material of the arch and its configuration, the opening will become 10-15 cm lower, so when measuring, make this amendment to all calculations. When choosing a color scheme and type of construction, one should take into account the color of the hallway and its dominant style, the area of the room, and the height of the ceiling. If you ignore at least one little thing, it can turn out to be completely ugly and inconvenient. So, turning to a professional designer for any uncertainty about the final result is quite reasonable.

If the interior is made in a retro style, it is appropriate to use natural wood to decorate the arch, but for ultra-modern hallways and living rooms, the creators of which were inspired by the style of techno and hi-tech, aluminum structures are better suited.
