Apricot is one of the trees that can often be found in the garden. Therefore, it is so important to choose the right variety. This could be, for example, Sibiryak Baikalova.

Description of the variety

Sibiryak Baikalov was admitted to use in 2002. The fruits have a universal purpose.

By the type of growth, this is a medium-sized plant with a height of about 3.5 m. The crown is formed in a spreading, spherical shape. The foliage is good. Begins to bear fruit on young shoots.

Sibiryak Baikalov has a thick brown bark, but at a young age the shoots have a red tint. The branches grow straight and have good strength. The crop is harvested from shoots that are 2-3 years old.

Apricot flowers are white with a pink tint.

The foliage of the described variety is round in shape, the edges are serrated.

Sibiryak Baikalov is prized for its ability to recover from frost. Even if the tree freezes, new shoots form on it in large numbers. The bark of this plant is able to withstand a drop in temperature to -40 degrees, while there are no frosts.

The crown of Sibiryak Baikalov does not grow, pruning can be carried out every few years.

This variety also has a drawback - fruit buds can freeze out.

Fruit characteristics

The fruits grow large in size, weighing 25 to 37 grams. They are oval in shape, with an orange color. The pulp is of the same shade, it separates well from the stone.

Apricots of this variety are perfect for compotes and preserves; marmalade is made from them and eaten fresh.

The fruits of Sibiryak Baikalov perfectly withstand long-distance transportation and are well stored in a warehouse or cellar, the main condition is high-quality ventilation in the room.

Taste qualities

Despite the fact that Sibiryak Baikalov has a tasting score of 4.8 out of 5 possible points, the fruit has a slight bitterness.

Ripening and fruiting

The Siberian Baikalova tree begins to bear fruit 2-3 years after the seedling is planted in the ground. The variety belongs to the category of early ones, blooms closer to mid-May, bears fruit by the end of July or early August. The apricot bears fruit every year.

When planting an apricot tree on your site, you need to know about the features of its fruiting. The apricot begins to bear fruit at the age of two to four years after planting in a permanent place in the garden and bears fruit steadily up to 25-30 years. The tree's yield peaks at the age of five to six years.

Yield

An average of 20 kg of ripe fruit can be harvested from a tree, but the yield is strongly influenced by the weather conditions in the growing region. Even if the thaw alternates with frost in spring and winter, this does not affect the formation of ovaries.

Growing regions

It is grown mainly in the East Siberian region, but can also be found in other regions of the country.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

Sibiryak Baikalova is a partially self-fertile variety, for pollination they use:

  • Sayan apricot;

  • Mountain Abakan.

Growing and care

Apricots of this variety are planted only in spring - this is surprising, because other fruit trees are planted in autumn. This difference is explained by the fact that young seedlings of Sibiryak Baikalov do not survive well after autumn frosts. Planting in spring ensures that the plant has time to take root in a new place before the onset of cold weather.

Sibiryak Baikalov is recommended to plant in a place protected from the wind. Most of the day, the site should be in the sun. Thanks to this, the harvest will ripen faster, and the fruits themselves will be sweeter.

Apricot of this variety does not tolerate excess water, so the soil should be well-drained, and the groundwater should be far from the surface. Excess moisture for this plant is worse than lack of moisture, so you need to pay special attention to this. The place for planting the seedlings of Sibiryak Baikalov should also be properly prepared, to ensure that the soil has a neutral pH and is rich in magnesium.

In this case, you can apply magnesium or multicomponent fertilizer. If you are planning to create a large plantation, it must be borne in mind that the distance between the plants should be 6 x 6 m.

At a later growing season, apricot Sibiryak Baikalov should not be poured, because excess water can lead to rotting and cracking of the fruit. In the case of a hot summer, the situation changes; the tree should be irrigated from time to time.

Additionally, caring for this apricot comes down to pruning. Damaged or diseased shoots are removed. In addition, pruning is done to increase yields. During the first three years, Sibiryak Baikalov's apricot is pruned every spring. Optimally, as early as possible, even before the flowers appear. Shoots are cut by about 1/3 of the length, over 4-5 buds. This will allow the plant to produce more skeletal branches rather than side shoots.

On old trees of this variety, shoots are removed that do not give more flowers, and the rest are successively shortened by 15 cm.

In order for an apricot tree to take root well in a new place, it is necessary to study in advance all the subtleties of its correct planting. Depending on the climate in the region, you need to choose the optimal time for planting a seedling. Determine the location, properly prepare the landing pit.
Grafting is the main method of reproduction of the apricot tree, which allows you to preserve all the varietal qualities of the fruits, increase the yield and give the fruit crop additional properties, such as frost resistance and drought resistance. It is necessary to correctly determine the timing of vaccination and choose the right stock.
Annual pruning of apricot is necessary for the correct formation of the crown of a young seedling, rejuvenation of old trees and preservation of the yield and quality of the fruit. Regular pruning is carried out not only in spring and autumn, but also in summer.

Disease and pest resistance

Sibiryak Baikalova is not resistant to damping off. The most common and dangerous disease is bacterial gangrene, which begins to attack flowers. If you do not notice the defeat in time, it spreads quickly and takes up the entire tree. Apricot Sibiryak Baikalov affected by this disease may die within one season. Therefore, as soon as you notice the first symptoms, immediately prune the infected shoots, which must be burned immediately.

Another major problem is moniliosis, which can destroy the entire crop. Infection occurs already during flowering, but the disease manifests itself only on ripening fruits (small, rotten, brown spots).

Sulfur-based fungicides work best for this apricot and should be used before bud break and then a few more times.

Like other fruit crops, apricots often suffer from various diseases and pests. It is necessary to periodically inspect the apricot tree in order to notice a disease or the appearance of a pest in time, promptly intervene and eliminate the problem.

Winter hardiness and the need for shelter

Shelter is not required for this variety of apricots.
