The main feature of the mixer is its design. This diversity does not mean a big difference in the technical characteristics of devices: the functional features of most models are unlikely to differ. The only thing to look out for when buying is whether the cartridge is replaceable or one-piece.

An item that can be replaced is advantageous in that it allows you to quickly restore the functionality of the entire device. Normal operation of the device will not be possible if the cartridge is selected incorrectly. Therefore, before buying a new part, it is important to understand the characteristics of the device.

It is also important to understand what this part serves for. The main task of the cartridge is to mix water with different temperature conditions. Also, this part is responsible for the intensity of the pressure. It turns out that this element receives the most load. That is why this system often stops working. If the existing mixer has a replaceable cartridge, it will not be difficult to replace the mechanism.

Manufacturers use ceramic disk cartridges in their devices more often. These products have practically no advantages over spherical types. In terms of workmanship and service life, the products are identical. It's just that it's easier for manufacturers to make disk cartridges, and they are more practical in production. Let us examine the criteria for choosing a cartridge device in more detail.

An important criterion for choosing a cartridge device is its size. To choose a device for the kitchen, shower or bath, you should understand that different models can be equipped with parts with parameters from 28 to 35 mm. The largest cartridges are usually mounted in bathroom mechanisms and range in size from 26 to 40 mm. At the same time, the standard size of the cartridge has nothing to do with the size of the mechanism itself. Mechanisms of different sizes can be installed in identical devices.

Some experts believe that the size of the mechanism affects the quality of use: the larger the size of the cartridge, the better the wear characteristics will be. Therefore, the size of the cartridge is of great importance in the selection. Another criterion may be the basis for the manufacture of the cartridge. They come in ceramic or metal. Also, another criterion should be the type of the device itself. The cartridges are suitable for thermostatic devices, single-lever valves, double-lever devices with flexible hoses.

By the way, the main elements of a conventional collapsible mechanism are:

• frame;
• ceramic plates;
• covers;
• stock;
• silicone gaskets.

The operating period of the cartridge depends on the tightness of the ceramic plates. The ease of opening and closing the mixer depends on the precision of the fitting and grinding of these plates.

As mentioned above, cartridges come in two varieties: disk or ball type. The ceramic disk cartridge is equipped with a plastic case, and this part can be collapsible or non-collapsible. If the part is collapsible, then there will be two parts in it, and they will be connected by means of a rubber seal. The inserts are located in the holes on the bottom. The parts are held together by plastic rivets.

The ball-type device looks like a hollow steel ball equipped with communicating holes. Usually one of them is output, and two are input. Depending on how the holes are located, the temperature and flow are set. With a larger junction area, water flows more strongly. The fluid temperature changes by turning or tilting the nozzles. Inside the cavities of the reinforcement mechanism, the liquid is mixed.

The ball-type cartridge mechanism often breaks due to accumulated deposits. They form inside the empty ball, which impairs the smoothness of the mechanism. Under the action of such a device, the joystick of a single-lever crane itself may break.

Typical dimensions of mechanisms for different devices are divided according to certain standards, which are different for each model. For example, for washbasins or showers, models with standard sizes 28, 32 or 35 mm have become widespread. Bathroom faucets are most often equipped with cartridges ranging from 40 to 45 mm. However, the mixers themselves look identical.

For almost all mixers, one rule applies: the larger the cartridge, the more efficient it is. Chinese faucets (for example, Frap) have large diameter cartridges and a large spout size. At the same time, the large diameter of the cartridge of the branded models Fiora, Iddis, Sedal and other options does not always mean quality. Here it is important to pay attention to other technical characteristics of the products. For example, for a high spout, the optimal cartridge diameter is 35–40 mm.

The sequence of actions of the installer will be as follows:

• removing the plug with a conventional screwdriver;
• unscrewing the locking screw with a thin screwdriver;
• dismantling the rotary handle from the stem;
• removal of the chrome ring, which plays the role of decorative;
• unscrewing the clamping brass nut with a repair wrench;
• removing the broken mechanism.

Removing the nut can be difficult due to the lack of lubricant inside. To process such a device, a special liquid will be required. It is better to lubricate with WD-40, while the liquid must be kept for some time. The processed nut will be unscrewed without difficulty, and the cartridge will be able to be removed from its place.

It is advisable to inspect the removed mechanism. Cracks and other troubles may appear in it. If there are any, then you need to go for another mechanism. It is important to install it in such a way that the projections and holes in the mixer are identical. If this condition is not met, the device will begin to leak.

The new part must be secured as follows:

• first you need to bait it, then screw the mounting nut;
• install a protective cover at your point;
• install the handle and screw it on;
• tighten the locking screw;
• place the decorative ring in its place.

That's it, now you can organize a test water switch.If there is no leakage, then the installation of the cartridge was successful. If all installation conditions are met, and the leak still appears, check the gasket. Perhaps it has ceased to fulfill its purpose, and there is no tightness between the joint and the mixer body. Replacing the seal solves the problem that has arisen.

Replacing a ball device is almost identical to repairing a disc mechanism. Here, too, you first need to remove the decorative plastic ring. Then you need to unscrew the retaining screw and remove the mixer handle.

Then you need to remove the trim, which is usually fixed to the body. Then you need to remove the ball valve. If defects are found, the device is replaced. But in most cases, it is enough to clean the cavities in the ball with a rag, remove the accumulated nodules. The assembly takes place in the reverse order. The mechanism will last longer if filters are installed at the water inlet, providing at least a rough cleaning.

The changeover of devices installed in the kitchen or shower rooms is identical. If the mixer has a complex shape, has sensor equipment or a thermostat, then it is better not to replace the functionality with your own hands, especially if you do not have the appropriate experience, but entrust it to professionals. Sometimes it is not at all necessary to dismantle the cartridge, but it is enough to make a cosmetic repair of the device. This will help, for example, when working surfaces are clogged or decorative rings are worn out.

There are several cosmetic options available.

• Lubricate the plates. This will help reduce friction and prolong the life of the device. In this work, special oily mixtures or hermetic compounds will come in handy.
• The thermostatic cartridge can be adjusted. This will help when the device has reset due to frequent use or poor quality water.
• If dirt is the cause of the malfunction, then you can remove it with an ordinary toothbrush. Table vinegar can also help in the work.

When choosing a device, you need to take into account its characteristics. If they do not match, the mechanism can rotate tightly on its axis. As a result of the wrong choice of mechanism, the crane will simply fail faster. This disturbance will also reduce the performance of the entire mixer. It also happens that the flexible liner cracks or the thread wears out.

Carefully study the shape and number of holes in the valve - this is the main parameter for identifying the cartridge. The number of slots and protrusions can vary as shower, bath or kitchen models often differ. Mechanisms with other hole options will simply not be possible to mount into an existing device.
